Copperfield’s hideaway: Magic is in the secrecy

Musha Cay’s raison d’etre is secrecy — bought at $350,000 a week.

Away from everyone except close friends, TV gabfest queen Oprah Winfrey binged in peace on this pristine 150-acre private island resort just 30 minutes from Palm Beach by float plane.

Country stars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw frolicked in the crystal-clear surf without fear that sexy pictures would end up in tabloids.

Big-screen star John Travolta and billionaire geek Bill Gates are among those who have taken their extended families to its wall-free security unavailable anywhere else.

Then magician David Copperfield fell in love with Musha’s deserted beaches.

In time, he plunked down $50 million to buy it from Miami Beach developer John Melk and used it both for his pleasure and as a business — and Musha Cay may never be the same.

Privacy and secrecy? They may soon disappear.

Authorities have been investigating allegations that Copperfield raped a 21-year-old Seattle aspiring model he met at one of his shows. The alleged assault — which Copperfield says never happened — took place on the island earlier this year.

A source familiar with Copperfield’s businesses told Page 2.1 that FBI agents have been quizzing an island worker based in Fort Lauderdale about the operation of the illusionist’s hideaway.

“I can’t comment,” said Gary Luedke, whose job it is to ship food and equipment.

Luedke’s job, I’m told, also includes transferring Copperfield’s guests from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International to the island-bound puddle jumper.

The source added that Luedke took the alleged victim to her flight to the island. She was back four days later to return home and confided in Luedke that “something happened.”

“There’s no police on or near the island,” the source said. “She couldn’t go anywhere.”

According to several brochures about the private resort, accommodations on Musha include lodging for 20 at the main house and smaller cottages, as well as a small village across the island for 30 staffers. The amenities include plenty of water toys, a personal chef and butler and a good telephone system.

“People who had never heard of the island are asking about it, but not necessarily to rent,” said a luxury-vacation broker who asked not to be named. “This will hurt the business, especially when it comes to flying celebrities over there.”

Rocker Vince Neil walked into his new downtown West Palm Beach bar for the first time Tuesday afternoon and saw beyond the dust, countertop-devoid bars and the half-finished handpainted mural of famous album covers.

“Nice,” he said. “This is gonna to be a very cool place!”

The Motley Crue frontman, 46, currently touring solo, took advantage of an Orlando concert Thursday to stop by to see what’s scheduled to become Dr. Feelgood’s when it opens shortly after Thanksgiving.

“I’m hoping to be able to do a show for the grand opening,” said Neil, who’s working on other Dr. Feelgood’s clubs in Atlantic City and Vegas. “Maybe we can close the street and get rocking.”

The old-style pharmacy-themed bar, named after Crue’s 1989 hit album, will feature Neil memorabilia, some of his Harley-Davidsons and scantily-clad dancers.

It’s the brainchild of local nightlife developers Cleve Mash and Rodney Mayo. Other investors include former Miami Dolphins tackle Todd Wade and former Florida Gator QB Bob Hewko.

It’s Neil, however, who’s become quite the entrepreneur. In addition to a tattoo parlor and a restaurant in his hometown of Las Vegas, the singer of Girls, Girls, Girls also runs a tequila company and a winery.

Gloria’s no-show caused by mom’s illness, surgery

Forget Dancing With The Stars, Jay Leno and Ellen DeGeneres.

For songbird Gloria Estefan, Mom is No. 1.

estefan200.jpgThe Vero Beach Latin crossover this week canceled appearances on the three major network shows after her mama fell seriously ill Sunday — despite the fact Estefan could have used the exposure to boost sales of her new album.

Actually, the 50-year-old Cuba-born singer was already in L.A. when she heard the news that her mom had been taken to a Miami hospital, so she rushed back to SoFla.

“Family’s first,” Estefan Enterprises rep Laura Mejia tells Page 2.1. “It’s always been that way. Outside of her sister, husband and children, Gloria’s mother is her closest living relative in this country. We’ll try to reschedule the appearances.”

While still in ICU, 77-year-old Gloria Fajardo, a retired Miami-Dade school teacher, is said to be recovering well from emergency surgery. Estefan was still by her side Wednesday and took infrequent breaks by visiting the ICU waiting room.

According to Mejia, Fajardo — the widow of a Bay of Pigs volunteer — suffered an intestinal rupture and a subsequent infection.

Signs that something hasn’t been quite right became obvious Tuesday night when Dancing host Tom Bergeron made the sudden announcement that Estefan, the night’s featured entertainer, wouldn’t make it because of “personal reasons.”

The show used its band and backup singers to play some Estefan classics.

Estefan last month released her first album in four years, 90 Milas, but sales have been lackluster. After just 13 weeks on the Billboard Latin 100 chart, Estefan tumbled to No. 49, behind the likes of Juanes, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony.

Estefan, who now spends much of her time at a beach home near Sebastian Inlet, early next year is scheduled to open a remodeled hotel in Vero Beach.

WELCOME TO SOUTH FLORIDA . . .
. . . Singer Julian Lennon, son of the long-dead Beatles guitarist John Lennon, is moving to Miami Beach. The 44-year-old troubadour, whose mom is John’s first wife, Cynthia, got himself an 1,800-square-foot, two-bedroom condo at the new Ritz-Carlton Club, which should be finished in late 2009. His purchase price wasn’t available, but prices in the 17-story building go from $900,000 to $17.5 million. Lennon is known for songs like Too Late For Goodbyes.

ANIMAL CRUSADER BO DEREK STILL SHOCKED ABOUT PAL MARK FOLEY

The thought of 1970s sex siren Bo Derek handling a snake and riding a horse semi-nude may conjure up blue thoughts in some people — but animals are now something dead serious for the star of Tarzan, the Ape Man.

“It’s not my nature to take on any cause,” says Derek, who once sizzled on the big screen as an oversexed pot smoker in 10. “But after a trip to the Galapagos (Islands) six years ago, I just had to get involved. Things there were in such harmony until poaching started. They’re killings tons of sea cucumbers and sharks to send to Asia. It was all just very sad.”

Derek, 50, was in SoFla on Wednesday to tour a cargo warehouse at Miami International Airport that receives live animals from far-flung places destined to American families. The live-in galpal of Sex and The City hunk John Corbett, Derek said her goal in visiting was to raise awareness about the illegal exotic-pet trade.

Along with U.S. Customs and U.S. Fish and Wildlife inspectors, Derek inspected a shipment of live African clawed frogs from Chile. The shipment of the slimy croakers, described as something akin to some characters in Monsters Inc., was properly documented and deemed legal before being forwarded to a pet store in North Florida.

“After Asia, North America is the second-biggest consumer of endangered species,” Derek told Page 2.1. “Whether it’s coral jewelry, elephant ivory, tortoise shells and live animals, like snakes, we need to be cognizant that many animals become endangered because of us.”

Then the politically active Derek diverted from the topic slightly to reveal who her man is in the current presidential campaign. The staunch Republican also shared her thoughts on the first anniversary of the sex scandal that brought down Lake Worth product Mark Foley.

“It’s still early in the campaign, but I’ve gone to two functions for (former NYC Mayor) Rudy Giuliani. I’ll probably vote for him. I particularly appreciate his leadership abilities.”

As for Foley — who a year ago resigned from the U.S. Congress after blue e-mails to underage pages surfaced — Derek said she’s still shocked about her friend’s swift descent. A frequent visitor to the Palm Beaches, Derek has known Foley for years.

“He was very active in efforts to stop the slaughter of horses overseas for their meat,” the beauty said. “I’ve not heard from him since this happened. I’m still in shock.”

Monthly reports reveal Rush’s hefty income

Congrats to conservative gasbag Rush Limbaugh!

He just started his last month on probation, and according to the Florida Department of Corrections file obtained by Page 2.1, he’s been a good boy.

If he doesn’t mess up by Oct. 31, he’ll be off the hook.

Palm Beacher Limbaugh, 56, has been drinking some, but not enough to get him in trouble, according to the paperwork.

He swears he has consumed no illegal drugs and passed drug tests — even if some U.S. senators this week wondered about that.

He’s been attending his drug-addiction therapy religiously. And — except once last summer when he was caught at PBIA with a legal stash of Viagra — Limbaugh has had no contact with cops.

What he’s been doing, however, is making boatloads of cash. Since his 18-month probation for a drug-related offense started in May 2006, Limbaugh reported to his probation officer, Louis Kurtz, that he made between $2 million and $3 million a month from his job as radio host.

By the time he is allowed to stop checking in every month, his meter will probably stand at $50 million earned during his probation.

Kurtz had no comment, but e-mail included in the file show Kurtz has been routinely e-mailing Limbaugh’s handlers at the Premier Radio Network in Sherman Oaks, Calif., to inquire whether Limbaugh is still gainfully employed.

Sparked by 2003 allegations from Limbaugh’s housekeeper that he was buying thousands of doses of OxyContin and other pain-killers, Palm Beach County State Attorney Barry Krischer’s staff investigated for nearly three years. In April 2006, Limbaugh finally was charged with lying to a doctor to obtain a controlled substance and benefited from a first-offender break: Krischer’s office would not prosecute and Limbaugh would have no record if he abided by a strict regimen for the next 18 months.

A corrections spokesman said this week — less than a month from the finish line — Limbaugh hasn’t had any problems.

For more information, here are the terms of his sentence, and here is his monthly report.
