Copperfield’s hideaway: Magic is in the secrecy

Musha Cay’s raison d’etre is secrecy — bought at $350,000 a week.
Away from everyone except close friends, TV gabfest queen Oprah Winfrey binged in peace on this pristine 150-acre private island resort just 30 minutes from Palm Beach by float plane.
Country stars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw frolicked in the crystal-clear surf without fear that sexy pictures would end up in tabloids.
Big-screen star John Travolta and billionaire geek Bill Gates are among those who have taken their extended families to its wall-free security unavailable anywhere else.
Then magician David Copperfield fell in love with Musha’s deserted beaches.
In time, he plunked down $50 million to buy it from Miami Beach developer John Melk and used it both for his pleasure and as a business — and Musha Cay may never be the same.
Privacy and secrecy? They may soon disappear.
Authorities have been investigating allegations that Copperfield raped a 21-year-old Seattle aspiring model he met at one of his shows. The alleged assault — which Copperfield says never happened — took place on the island earlier this year.
A source familiar with Copperfield’s businesses told Page 2.1 that FBI agents have been quizzing an island worker based in Fort Lauderdale about the operation of the illusionist’s hideaway.
“I can’t comment,” said Gary Luedke, whose job it is to ship food and equipment.
Luedke’s job, I’m told, also includes transferring Copperfield’s guests from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International to the island-bound puddle jumper.
The source added that Luedke took the alleged victim to her flight to the island. She was back four days later to return home and confided in Luedke that “something happened.”
“There’s no police on or near the island,” the source said. “She couldn’t go anywhere.”
According to several brochures about the private resort, accommodations on Musha include lodging for 20 at the main house and smaller cottages, as well as a small village across the island for 30 staffers. The amenities include plenty of water toys, a personal chef and butler and a good telephone system.
“People who had never heard of the island are asking about it, but not necessarily to rent,” said a luxury-vacation broker who asked not to be named. “This will hurt the business, especially when it comes to flying celebrities over there.”

The Vero Beach Latin crossover this week canceled appearances on the three major network shows after her mama fell seriously ill Sunday — despite the fact Estefan could have used the exposure to boost sales of her new album.
