Just as they did at the end of the 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns, the Democrats unleashed a slew of Barack Obama-supporting celebrities onto South Florida.

A big-screen spy, Batgirl, the woman who played long-suffering wife of blue legend Ray Charles at the movies, a pudgy Seinfeld sidekick – all are scouring the area to garner more Obama votes.

Oscar winner Matt Damon, he of The Bourne Identity and The Departed, is still stumping today after kicking off a tour through Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Broward counties (in a beat-up gas-guzzling SUV) Sunday in West Palm Beach.

In WBP, he posed for dozens of pictures, signed autographs and talked to Obama volunteers about education, the environment and eight years of Republican rule.

On the former governor of his native Massachusetts Bill Weld, a GOPer, coming out for Obama: “Well, some GOP governors of MA still have sense!”

(Two other governors of the state, Jane Swift and Paul Cellucci, called John McCain “head and shoulders above” Obama.)

On Damon’s believing in the public school system: “She (his stepdaughter) struggled so they told me, because I have the means, to send her to private school. I went to public high school and got into the best college in the United States (Harvard).”

Late Sunday, Damon met up with Alicia Silverstone (Batman & Robin, Clueless), Kerry Washington (Ray, I Think I Love My Wife) and Joe Kennedy III, the 28-year-old grandson of Robert Kennedy, in Miami Beach for another rally, VoteFest 08. Others seen with campaign workers included Spanish singing star Noelia Zanon, who wrote one of the anthems of the Obama campaign in Spanish.

Actor Jason Alexander, who played George Constanza in TV’s Seinfeld, appeared on the scene today. He started at Florida Atlantic University, where he worked the cafeteria tables. He was scheduled for stops in Pembroke Pines and Margate, near Fort Lauderdale, later today.

Not campaigning: Owen Wilson! The star of the upcoming Marley & Me was spotted in the club seats at the Florida Panthers hockey game Friday night. He hasn’t hit the nightlife like he did this summer while filming the dog drama and so far is staying out of the political fray.
