After blowing off a debate against his Republican opponent, lawyer Tom Rooney, U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at tomorrow’s Kiwanis fundraiser in the heart of Fort Pierce.
The yearly shindig, dubbed Farm City Barbecue, was created to foster links between the farmers and downtown dwellers.“It’s also a fundraiser for prizes to school kids involved in exhibits for a fair in February,” said club Secretary Mitchell Williford.
“There’s been a lot of discussion on having Mr. Mahoney as a speaker. But we made a commitment to him months ago, and we decided to stick with our commitment.”
So, why is a group dedicated to serving children having a self-admitted serial philanderer over for pulled pork?
“Well, morality has been discussed when we decided to keep him,” said Williford. “But it wouldn’t be right to disinvite him.”
According to advance publicity, the barbecue is also sponsored by the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce. When asked if the chamber has a problem with Mahoney speaking, Executive Director Linda Cox said: “We’re not here to pass judgment on anyone.”
Although he agreed to a debate at Friday’s luncheon of West Palm’s Forum Club weeks ago, Mahoney was unsuccessful in trying to ban the media and let Rooney debate alone.
As of Wednesday afternoon Mahoney still has the intention of going to the barbecue.
Mahoney is vying to keep his seat in Congress. He represents an area between West Palm and Fort Pierce that also extends to Florida’s left coast.
Mahoney — sir — you have clearly learned nothing over the last several weeks. That leaves only a few words that describe your behavior — cowardly, arrogant, unbelievable and stupid.
Here’s the thing you should have figured out by now — Congress is not about you.
As long as you are an elected official, paid by the taxpayer, and working on our time, you are a public servant not a private citizen. You are about us.
That means you may not choose whom to debate, or under what conditions you wish to debate.
It is your job to simply answer the questions that are asked.
If some of those questions turn out to be embarrassing, and if the answers reflect poorly on you no matter how you find a way to say them, well, you did that to yourself without help from anyone else.
In fact, your refusal to face up to us has destroyed whatever slight scrap of sympathy — you are human and no one is perfect — might have existed a week ago.
Sadly sir, you have thrown everything away, starting with your family.
Forget about becoming a part of history, a force for good in whatever movement comes out of this election, no matter who becomes president; forget about what good your own efforts might have accomplished; it’s all over now.
At this late hour in the day, if you still believe you can dictate to anybody, especially to order television cameras out of an official debate, then some one needs to you tell you’ve broken with reality. The sad thing is, we don’t care anymore.
The harshest judgment we can pass on you — and we’re angry enough to want to pass harsh judgment — is to point out that the best you deserve is no vote at all.
So you ought to find out if Tom Rooney wants to keep that saltwater aquarium in your Washington D.C. office — you’re not going to need it come January.
Mahoney has scandalized all of the women in the Martin County engeneering department. I am mad as hell and I am not going to take this anymore!!! Because Martin County and the press have refused to publically name the woman in this department who is sleeping with Congressman Mahoney it lends to the idea that it could be ANY one of the women in that department. I know of at least two women who were approached and asked if they were the one sleeping with Mahoney. It is disgusting and WRONG that decent women have to be smeared because of one opportunistic,gold digging,home wrecker in county MANAGEMENT who chose to sleep with a married congressman. I know we are all sinners in this world and nobody is asking that this woman to be burned at the stake but she should come forward and give an apology and an explaination to her co-workers. Female employees who are decent women deserve respect not cover ups that scandalize them and bring questions about their character. Protecting the guilty and scandalizing the innocent, Is that how character counts in Martin County? It seems to me that a disturbing atmosphere of disrespect for ladies exists in Martin government. I see a class action lawsuit brewing.
Mahoney’s ads talk about how much experience he has. Exactly when did he get this experience. The News has reported that he spent alot of time on his government issued cell phone talking to his girlfriends. There was also some metion of requesting phone sex. I wonder if he was chatting with his girlfriends while he was actually suppose to be voting in Congress.
