A Tale of Two Parties

When, about 10:55 p.m., the presidential race was deemed over and Barack Obama a winner, the lobby at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in West Palm Beach erupted.

Haitian waiters threw their arms into the air. An Asian woman cried. State Sen. Dave Aronberg jumped up and down as if to celebrate a touchdown. West Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel, who wore six Obama buttons, grinned from ear-to-ear.

Now, they had a party — a historic occasion led by a rendition of the Isley BrothersShout.

“That was a sigh of relief,” Aronberg said about his joyful gymnastics. He added, repeating a Democratic refrain that John McCain would just be a George W. Bush clone: “I just couldn’t even think about another four years of a Bush administration.”

Said Frankel: “Why I didn’t support Sarah Palin? Because I’m a feminist. And Obama inspires every young person to have a dream.”

Two miles north, at the GOP’s calling center and would-be victory party, the lights were dimmed. The cleaning crew deflated blow-up elephants clad in American flags. The bartenders were packing dozen of unopened bottles of booze.

The only happy faces were those on the cutouts of Palin and McCain leading guests into the party.

That shindig in a Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard office building broke up more than an hour before the presidential race was called.

“The food was gone so the people started leaving,” said local GOP boss Sid Dinerstein. “That, and the fact we weren’t going to elect a president this year drove people out.

“We fought hard. From this office, we made more than 500,000 phone calls over the past few weeks.

“At least, we’re getting a congressional seat back,” he added, referring to West Palm lawyer Tom Rooney’s victory over the sex scandal-scarred Democrat incumbent Tim Mahoney.

Aronberg is insane if he believes McCain=4 more years of Bush. Go back and look at McCain’s record; he wasn’t labled “maverick” for nothing. Talk that McCain is George III is nothing more than spin from the liberal left, and unfortunately it worked this election.

As for Lois’ comments re: Palin, nothing surprises me. I credit Lois for being a champion of women’s causes, but you would have to be blind to have not seen that Sarah Palin was a victim of her own sexuality– not only by men but also women. Lois’ cries of feminism, at least when it comes to Palin, are BS.

There’s no question about it. The Democrats put out a better package. But at the end of the day, the Republicans had a much better product.

    Oh well. Our loss.
