As locals who say they are owed money by the Palm Beach businessman and murder suspect Thanos Papalexis try to collect, many of the same people unknowingly are paying for the legal bills in Papalexis’ extradition proceedings.

Attorney Cathy Lively, who represents a landlord who’s owed $11,000 by Papalexis, says she was supposed to depose the silver-tongued entrepreneur in her civil lawsuit Monday morning.

But U.S. Marshals declined her request to grill Papalexis with a court reporter at his temporary quarters at the county lockup.

Then she found out that the Federal Public Defender’s office – lawyers provided by the U.S. taxpayer – is now representing Papalexis.“It’s sorta ironic that he’s been declared indigent by the federal court system,” Lively said.

Known for his flashy ways, the Bentley-driving Papalexis – the son of a Greek oil-shipping tycoon –unsuccessfully attempted to start several businesses in West Palm Beach over the past four years. Both Grand Legacy in Palm Beach and Vita Luxury in West Palm were fractional-ownership clubs that promised, but couldn’t deliver, the use of mansions, a private island in The Bahamas, planes, choppers, yachts and other toys.

What Papalexis delivered, however, is a trail of unpaid bills that could reach in the millions. He owes employees (some who worked for weeks without getting paid), landlords, car leasing companies and others.

Those hoping to collect may never see one red cent. Within weeks, Papalexis could be in a prison in Great Britain. He’s expected to stand trial for his role in the 2000 beating death of a loner who wouldn’t leave a warehouse that Papalexis bought in London.

Said Lively: “My client received a personal guarantee note from Mr. Papalexis for rent on an apartment for his employees. I know it’s not a lot of money, but it’s the principle.

“There is a hearing in this case Dec. 5 and I’m requesting that the marshals produce him (Papalexis) at the hearing.”

I am a past employee of Mr. Papalexis and am shocked by the allegations against him. I am a true believer in the justice system and as a wife and mother have a hard time with what has happened to his family. They did not ask for this and I find it very hard to believe that his son’s photo is posted on your site.

Could you please out of the goodness of your heart remove this photo. If people really want personal information let them have a hard time finding it instead of having it posted and readily available.

I thank you for your consideration in this matter.
