DMX gig in Boca canceled; he’s back in the slammer
Things are never simple with rapper DMX.
The man was supposed to perform in Boca Raton Thursday night.
Won’t be there.
DMX was picked up by police in Miami Tuesday on a warrant from Arizona. He missed a court date in Phoenix last week after pleading not guilty last month to drug, identity theft and animal cruelty charges.
“He’s a friend of a friend and I hung out with him,” said Julio Quin. He manages Pulse Ultra Lounge in Boca, the old Club Boca, and organized tomorrow’s ill-fated show. “So I asked him if he’d come to my club for his birthday and he agreed. But then he gets himself arrested again. Somebody who was staying at the same hotel in North Miami (the White House Inn on The Bay) dropped a dime on him.”
DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, turns 38 next week. The sometime actor (The Fast and The Furious, Cradle 2 The Grave) has been struggling with financial problems and various addictions.
Quin managed to make a big deal out of what was to be a 30-minute gig, putting out posters and announcing it on radio stations. He said Pulse sold “several hundred” tickets to the show, at $20-a-pop.
“This was just a treat for the Thursday crowd,” Quin said. “DMX’s really a nice guy, but he’s got his demons.
“I guess I’ll just stand outside and pay people back.”
