Gloria’s salsa rings out; “green” cash pours in
The next Super Bowl in South Florida is 51 weeks away.
But some ticket prices are set already.
A pair of Super Bowl ducats was auctioned Friday night at the Everglades Foundation’s yearly gala. Sold, for $30,000, to foundation chair Paul Tudor Jones, a hedge fund magnate, and his wife, Sonia.
Smack dab in the middle of a lackluster Bernie Madoff-plagued social season, the foundation also brought the riffs of salsa to The Breakers in Palm Beach. Latin songbird Gloria Estefan and her 16-member Miami Sound Machine entertained the 500-plus in a private show.

“We’re used to bigger venues,” said Gloria’s record executive hubby, Emilio Estefan, as he looked around a cramped ballroom. “We were at (London’s) Wembley not so long ago. We had to adjust quite a bit when it comes to lighting and timing, but it’s for a good cause.”
The foundation’s mission to restore the Everglades brought a pallet of big names to the hotel, including: Palm Beacher record exec Tommy Mottola (a.k.a. the ex-Mr. Mariah Carey) and his current wife, Mexican superstar Thalia; Margaritaville singer Jimmy Buffett; golf legend Jack Nicklaus, at his cranky best; author Carl Hiaasen, who was honored for his raising of environmental concerns in best-sellers like Strip Tease and Tourist Season; former talk-show host, TV show director and writer Wil Shriner; environmentalist Nat Reed; former Florida governor Claude Kirk; U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson; State Sen. Dave Aronberg; and the star of Univision’s gossip show, El Gordo y la Flaca, Lili Estefan.
The dessert-time auction, meanwhile, included the strangest item to raise cash for a “green” cause.
The $30,000 package, lost among a trip through the Everglades with Hiaasen and Reed as guides and a fishing expedition in the Keys, came courtesy of Jack Nicklaus and his partners in a new sporting club near Lake O: A pheasant shoot for 24 people. Apparently, the shindig includes the release of a 1,000 pheasants from the club’s 75-foot tower. Now, that’s green!
