Radio’s Randi Rhodes is off-the-air, AGAIN!

Chances are, it’s going to be a while until left-tipping West Palm Beach radio talker Randi Rhodes, who’s has been off the air for more than two weeks, returns behind the mike.
A nasty spill or violent attack by a crazed conservative?
Nope
Her mouth got the best of her?
Not this time.
Rhodes, who’s been heard here for more than a decade afternoons on WJNO-AM 1290, tells Page2Live that three separate lawyers told her she should quit working for syndicator Nova M.
So she walked.
“There were so many breaches of my contract it’s not even funny,” Rhodes said when asked if the company’s failure to pay for her libel insurance kept her off the air. “I’ll probably sue them. I should never have gone there.”
Even if Rhodes show originated from the JNO studios here, it was owned for the past 10 months by Arizona-based syndicator Nova M.
So happens Nova M filed for bankruptcy Tuesday.
“Oh sure, they’re dismantling that company so they don’t have to pay me, and they’ll start another one this week,” Rhodes said.
A man who answered the phone at Nova M’s headquarters would just say: “Randi Rhodes is no longer affiliated with the company.”
Nova M honchos aren’t returning calls. But a lawsuit filed by a company exec in Phoenix claims that working conditions at Nova included fights between owners, the husband-and-wife Shelly and Anita Drobny. In one instance, according to the lawsuit, a firing by Shelly was reversed on the same day by the wife.
Until Tuesday, Rhodes and Anita Drobny were going at it on their respective websites, both pointing the finger at the other without explaining what happened.
When asked if her liberal rantings got her in trouble, Rhodes said: “You’d think they knew what I did at (the liberal network) Air America.”
Rhodes moved to Nova M after she quit (or was canned from, depending whom you talk to) her sweet gig at Air America in April 2008. Her stay there wasn’t without controversy. Shortly before she was gone, Rhodes caused an uproar for calling the then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton a “whore.” She also made news in 2007 when she was seriously injured in a fall on a Manhattan sidewalk. Some said she had one too many. Others that she was attacked by a conservative. Rhodes never explained what happened.
She worked for JNO before flying to coop to Air America. She wouldn’t rule out returning there in the near future but said she received many calls from prospective employers.
“Big stations, small stations, they’re all calling,” Rhodes said. “I don’t know how long it’ll take, but I’m trying to get back on as soon as possible. It feels too weird not to be on the air in West Palm.”
For the time being, Rhodes is being replaced by , of all people,
Fox’s mouth, conservative Sean Hannity.
She’ll be back on the air soon, you can’t keep a good woman down. You go girl!!

As one who has been in or around the radio business since I was 13, Randi is without a doubt one of the best I’ve ever heard. And that’s from one who worked with the Late Dick Norman before he came to Florida.
Randi will be just fine. Her fans will be there when she lands.
Post her disappearance all over the net. Mention it in every blog or commenting website. There may be a more cunningly deceptive reason for her disappearance.

I find it amazing that a REAL radio Pioneer is kept off the air. There are very few people in radio who can be characterized as Pioneers. People who created a new radio format where none existed before. I can only think of three offhand:
1. Alan Freed, who invented Rock and Roll radio in Cleveland in the 1950’s.
2. Big Daddy Tom Donahue, who invented free-form Album-oriented Rock at KMPX and KSAN in San Francisco in the 1960’s. For examples of his work go to http://www.jive95.com .
3. Randi Rhodes, who invented progressive talk radio at WJNO in the 1990’s.

I found her to be classless, fulgar, mean-spirited and most importantly inaccurate in the details she presented on her program and would turn JNO off from the 3 to 6 pm time slot because of her!
The air waves are a much better place now that Randi is gone! It is not what she says it is her nasally, bitchy, northeastern gruff voice. 2 seconds, thats it, if i turn her on by mistake, it is like chalk screeching on the board. Please stay away.
Randi is certainly not without her flaws. She can be shrill and condescending. However, with radio filled with right wing radio, we need more progressive voices out there. She does do her homework and does not just spew the party junk like some do. I’m confident she’ll be back on the airwaves soon.
Even the best of the best have gone off the air for awhile. 2 in particular in Boston, The late great Jerry Williams and David “Bruds” Brudnoy. The left and the right. 2 great minds who knew radio and from what they spoke of. Randi is of the same school and will be back. It matters not if you agree with her or not, her statements were well thought out and presented in a professional atmosphere. Most of the time. But even when her words were a little less than professional, they were brilliant!

I’m thrilled that the 3-6PM slot on WJNO is back on my listening list. I at one time was a Randi fan when she was funny and not so rude, crude and full of liberal lies. She stopped telling the truth years ago. Our market place is better off without the hateful lies she has become so good at telling. I wondered what WJNO was keeping her around for. I continued to listen to Randi, but I was very unhappy back in November when she praised the Catholic Church for its architectural wonders and then attacked the religion for worshipping a “man on a pole.” I believe she was refering to the Crusified Christ. I believe most decent Americans agree that the one line no one in this country should ever step over is to attack another religion for its key beliefs in a disgraceful or vulgar way. Criticize in a civil way, yes.

Ater reading these comments, I realize that Randi is too eastern and NYC for many middle Americans. Actually Randi is very savvy. She studies, she researches and she’s a natural comedian. Sometimes she says some things that may have better been left unsaid. But that’s part of who she is. She certainly is not a liberal Ann Coulter. Coulter is not funny; funny is good humor not bitter, hateful outrageous junk. What Randi is at her core is a liberal’s liberal. That is difficult for fence sitters and Republicans.
Randi is one of the best radio talk show hosts that would use facts not talking points to make her arguments. She always had the sources listed so listeners can look and learn for themselves on the issues being discussed. She was the first person I knew that railed against the lies of the Bush administration and tracked the misuse of funds in Iraq and the War on Terror. She never stopped supporting the military and looking out for their interests first and foremost.
Randi will always have a fan base wherever she lands, and many of us are from the internet because all we have are right wing pundits who tend to think spewing hate filled tirades that stir up the un-thinking is radio versus using real facts to stir debate and intelligent discourse on real issues that affect our daily lives. We may not be radio listeners due our local affiliates but we go out of our way to listen and support those like Randi, and Rachel Maddow who use brains and not fluff to make valid points in modern America.

I was in the liquor store this evening and on the back of all the kettle one bottles were adds just like on milk cartons with a picture of randi rhodes asking have you seen me? On the bright side the sale of tin foil for all the little hats is on the upswing in palm beach.
It is such a delight to read comments from dittoheads and such that prove how little they know. Do you bother to read what you just typed? Do you lose track of the talking points while you hunt and peck? Do you just listen to Randi Rhodes or just yell back at the radio in order to avoid having to think?
Randi gives us homework so we can come to our own conclusions. Her sources aren’t cherry picked to prove her agenda. She relies on facts, which she footnotes for us. Then she shares her opinions with us. This is something that right wing radio has never done.
Randi does more than entertain us. She educates us. We listen because we are life long learners not opinionated clowns. Randi talks to callers who don’t agree with her (unlike right wing hosts). In fact, some of her best moments are when she presents facts that befuddle neo-con callers, who can only repeat themselves slightly louder each time.
Randi Rhodes teaches us why. She teaches us how to back up our opinions with facts. She reveals the distorted agendas of crack pots like Boehner and Cantor.
Randi Rhodes is a genius. You always have to make allowances for them. No really! She reminds me of Lenny Bruce who also revealed many truths that people did not like to hear.
Look back at some of these posts. The intelligence of those posting from the right is definitely suspect. Maybe Randi’s intelligence is just too much for them. It’s OK….we understand…wink wink…nudge nudge. “A nod is as good as a wink to a blind bat.”
Randi Rhodes is well-informed, passionate, and frequently annoying. I don’t agree with how she treats many of here on-air callers, but I do respect the amount of research she does, and her passion for trying to getting out all the news. She will end up somewhere, and hopefully learn from the experience.

Since Randi Rhodes has been off the air, I have stopped listening to radio all together. I realize that to some Randi was rude, but I always found that she dug deeper for the truth and as an American, I appreciate the truth. Randi’s show was the only one I listened to on WJNO and I certainly do not hear truthfulness from any of the talk shows currently airing on that station. I have listened to Randi for over 11 years and will listen again when she returns. By the way, it would be nice if all of the obscene and hateful comments would be removed. What ever happend to peace, love and understanding?
Randi was a liar on the air and she is a liar when it comes to all of these prospective employers calling her. This woman is radioactive. I’m not a fan of any of these terrible people (and I include Rhodes). I am a fan of Thom Hartmann and Ron Reagan, both of whom are progressives who don’t share Rhodes’ mean spirited attitude.

Is it really necessary to call Randi Rhodes names and be so vile, so obscene? Does it make you feel better about yourself, and who you are as a human? I would say grow up and seek some balance in your lives, but it will almost certainly fall on deaf ears. Let’s at least try and have a civil discourse. Please!
Why does the article suggest that Randi never talked about how she injured herself falling down after having some drinks. She talked about it soon afterward and on further occasions in her self-deprecating manner.
We should also remember that Randi beat Limbaugh’s listener numbers consistently in his own home town and still was somehow ignored by the so-called “liberal media” until going national.
Then the “liberal media” kept putting more conservatives on the air with bigger transmitters even while progressives were doing well if they could go one on one.
That’s the liberal media for ya.
On TV the “liberal media” puts on 2 conservatives for every 1 progressive, still.
Should we mention that Fox Noise lost 100 Million a year for five years but Murdoch kept pouring money into that hell-hole.
No need to mention those things though, everyone has surely heard these things plenty of times on the “liberal media”.
Randy is a liberal mouthpiece shockjock and does a good job for that crew. No one who knows anything about politics or real life really gives a rats rear about her point of view, people just listen to her to see how nasty she can be…
Without Randy, there is NO RADIO!!! The only problem is a large population without a brain. If you go back and check what she states on the radio, you’ll come to the conclusion that she is right.
Here in Portland, she was kicking ass over the douchebag Lars Larsen in the same time slot.

The main difference between Randi and most other radio talk show hosts is that Ranid will base an entire show on an article from a reputable journalist or news source that we probably would have missed if she hadn’t read it on the air. She deals in facts. The only other host I can think of who is nearly as fact-based is Thom Hartmann.
I don’t care whether a commentator is liberal or conservative. Those labels don’t really mean very much. But fact-based versus blowhard means something. Anyone can talk. Few people have the discipline to back up their talk with primary sources.
