One big slip of the keyboard Monday, and Palm Beach Gardens industrial photographer Ron Manera saw his business crawl to a virtual stop.

Perez Hilton

Perez Hilton

And he says he’s got blogger Perez Hilton and “his gay mafia” to thank.

Manera’s phones stopped working as callers were greeted either by a busy signal or a voice saying the phone was disconnected – even though it wasn’t.

His website got overloaded and crashed.

And his e-mail inbox filled up with hate mail.

Someone wanted to burn his home.

Someone else wrote about killing him and his family.

Manera’s crime?

Ron Manera

Ron Manera

The 57-year-old e-mailed what he says was a personal note to Hilton Monday to sound off about the Miss USA firestorm. Crown hopeful and devout Christian Carrie Prejean, 21, from California, lost after acknowledging her opposition to same sex marriage.

The flamboyant Hilton, a.k.a. The Queen of All Media, whose perezhilton.com is filled with sexually explicit comments about male celebrities, was the judge who asked the fateful question.

Prejean’s answer: “In my country, and in my family, I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman.”

Hilton eventually went off on the woman, saying among other things that he’d have jumped on stage to rip off her crown had she won.

And that got Manera mad.

By most standards, his e-mail to the L.A.-based Hilton was more than strongly worded. There was a slur.

“You disgusting, inconsequential, little twerp fag,” Manera wrote. “How dare you presume for the rest of America what our morals and standards should be? Crawl in a hole and die.”

Hilton highlighted the e-mail as “E-mail of the day” on his blog, and the hate began piling up on Manera.

Manera, who describes himself as a Conservative, now says he wished he lost the word “fag.” But he stands by his message.

“That despicable character (Hilton) came just short of using (an obscene word) to describe that fine young women (Prejean),” father-of-five Manera told Page2Live. “I was reacting to his making fun of the pageant contestant who dared speak about her beliefs.

“I suppose one of the words I used is politically incorrect, and now I know that it’s like the N-word for black people.”

Still, says Manera, he never thought his e-mail would cause such violent reaction.

“I’ve been bombarded by the gay mafia that Perez leads,” Manera said. “He’s a smear merchant. There were even people calling professional associations to have me kicked out. My goal in writing was to slap that little punk down for hurting that little girl. I’m not anti-gay.”

“I e-mailed my note to Perez Hilton personally, not to his blog, and he chose to put it out there for everyone.

Manera’s now looking for a lawyer to sue the oft-sued Hilton.

Hilton didn’t respond to my e-mail, a very professional one I promise, seeking comment.

Who's most at fault?

Sometimes the best comments are left unsaid. Using the “Fag” word was probably what set him off. Also using the term “Fag” and then turning around and saying your not Anti-gay, kinda makes you look like a fool. Sorry, you had issues, that is not professional on Perez behalf.

Also, Miss California comes from a state with a huge population, you can have your beliefs, but sometimes stating something politically correct, is a wise choice.

Well I’m not part of the “gay mafia” led by Perez Hilton, but I do occasionally visit his site. I saw the email and immediately made a mental note to never use Mr. Manera’s services. I wondered if his business would survive the backlash. Perez Hilton gets thousands, if not millions of emails a day. He highlighted this one because of what was said.

Sorry..but you don’t call a gay man a fag in this day and age and expect it to be okay.

As far as Miss California…you don’t make a statement like that when you are hoping to represent America. She could have said anything but “In my country”.

  5. Comment by Tim — April 23, 2009 @ 1:47 pm

As pretty as she is, she’s allowed to say anything. Perez Hilton? Never heard of him before now. How do people like him get famous anyway?

Well stated Rianna…As someone once stated beauty fades, but ignorance is forever.

  7. Comment by Mark Major — April 23, 2009 @ 2:01 pm

Turnabout is fair play. I don’t have the abilities but there has to be someone out there who does who can shut down the perezhilton.com with spam. Also. would it be possible for Mr Manera to compile a list of everyone who sent mail to him so we can start a campaign of harrassment back. I’m sure some of these folks who sent hatemail don’t want their bosses to know about it. Also it;s time for a boycott of everyone who hires or endorses perez hiton…to include the celebrities who support him.

  8. Comment by SunnyDayz — April 23, 2009 @ 2:17 pm

Perez Hilton is an attention grabbing, self important blogger, who says rude and often inaccurate things about celebrities and anyone he wants to make the butt of his gossip. He doesn’t deserve the time of day. He is a symbol of what is going wrong with American journalism, when he’s more widely read than most newspapers in the this country.

Yet, Mr. Manera stepped way over the line of decency himself with his hateful email. I don’t see how, in this day and age, people still think it’s OK to use rude racial, sexual and behavioral epithets towards others. It constitutes hate mail when delivered via any form of written communication.

  9. Comment by Curt — April 23, 2009 @ 2:23 pm

Hilton is a hypocrite. He gets upset about someone calling him F@g but he call’s Prejean a B!tch and a C*nt. Whats the difference? Both are derogatory and Hilton is the one who started the name calling, bc the contestant told her honest opinion when asked a question. Posting the gentlemans name and number further proves that Perez is a childish person who only makes other homosexuals look bad. If all americans thought like he does he would probably still be in the closet and unable to live his life as an openly gay man.

  10. Comment by Ray — April 23, 2009 @ 2:36 pm

Funny how Garafolo and the left calls conservatives rednecks and haters but yet it always seems its the frustrated little inconsequencial minority leftist groups that are threatening 1st amendment speech with death threats.

Keep digging. The hole you folks are in is gonna bury you one day.

  11. Comment by Helen W — April 23, 2009 @ 2:40 pm

Carrie Prejean should be allowed to voice her opinion with regards to “same-sex” marriages. If Perez Hilton (or anyone else in America) can be pro same-sex marriages then it’s only right that anyone else can be against it. It’s a matter of personal choice. Name calling and discrimination is so unnecessary!

I personally have chosen to be a heterosexual but I would never wish ill thoughts or feelings towards someone that chooses to be a homosexual. The real problem here is hatred amongst ourselves; not the fact that someone is gay or straight.

  12. Comment by Madonna hater — April 23, 2009 @ 2:46 pm

So much for free speach in America. Perez Hilton is a mean little man that say’s many many rude and mean things to anyone he wants but when the pretty little slipper is on the other foot he cries foul just like the supporters of his on this blog. I’m perfectly sure that our great Jake above has never used a slur, or Rhianna. They are just your garden variety Hypocrits with their holier than thou speaches. We are all Human and FREE SPEACH means just that “FREE”. As I have heard from the gay media and followers so often “if you don’t like it, turn it off” DUH! I agree with Fresh, Perez Hilton is a mean little nobody that needs to chill out and hopefully someday be a better and nicer human being rather than being the judge and jury for everyone else.

  13. Comment by DOUBLE STANDARDS! — April 23, 2009 @ 2:46 pm

What upsets me most about this whole situation is the double standards that some people in the gay community live by. While the gentelman was wrong for using the word “fag” the young lady has the the right to state her beliefs, thoughts & opinions; or should I say she SHOULD have the right. I love all people but I don’t agree with that lifestyle. I don’t feel that I should have it shoved down my throat everywhere I turn & be personally attacked for having different beliefs. Gays are always saying they’re being attacked &mistreated but they can be just as vicious too.

  14. Comment by JIm — April 23, 2009 @ 2:57 pm

Although as a gay male I find Ms. Hilton a bit appaling (the Ms being intentional). He was rude but Ms. California’s beliefs are hers and she as every right to them. Perez does not represent the average gay male.

  15. Comment by ribby — April 23, 2009 @ 3:17 pm

Ms. Prejean’s beliefs are in lock-step with the Presidents’s. Could someone please point to where Mr. Hilton and his ilk launched the same vile attacks against the President after his similar anti-gay marriage comments.

  16. Comment by pete — April 23, 2009 @ 3:26 pm

Hilton is a child who forgot to grow up. His mafia sound like the next terrorist faction. DHS should be watching them instead of veterans.

  17. Comment by cognative resonance — April 23, 2009 @ 3:29 pm

Now isn’t this interesting. I spent 20 years in San Francisco, which has what might be known as a reasonably large gay community. The term faggot, just like queer, was proudly re-claimed by the gays and frequently used in polite society with the only shock being from the P.C.’s.

And now the “Queen” of all media is having the vapors about a tag his own community claims as thier own?

    Anything for publicity eh maroon?

  18. Comment by MJP — April 23, 2009 @ 3:39 pm

funny, Perez Hilton called her a “B*^&%” and “C&$#” yet lets his hero 0bama skate for espousing the same beliefs without calling him a “P#&%$” or F*&”. Face it, he’s a media “W#&@$” and all your doing his giving more press. as for Mr. Manera, while your being crucified for dropping to the same depths as Perez you must realize that only a fag can all another one a fag…… get with it.

For more time than not, homosexuality was classified as a mental illness. I wonder why? There is nothing bonkers about this queen.

Also, it is against the law to do what these freaks have done. I hope it was all reported to the police and expect it to be prosecuted.

  26. Comment by Hadit — April 23, 2009 @ 4:36 pm

If I ever need an “industrial photographer”, Mr. Manera will be the FIRST person I call. It’s about time that someone stood up to the intolerance of the whacko left. They can spew their vile filth and live vacuous and obscene lifestyles, yet when someone defends a value that has been around since the beginning of time — THEY are the intolerant hatemongers. Today, the only group you can bash with impunity is conservative Christians.

I think the whole Miss America thing is stupid. However, free speech goes both ways. Kudos to a Miss America candidate who used a fundamental American right — freedom of speech.

I somehow wonder if it isn’t Donald Trump isn’t the one snickering gleefully on the side. Controversy sells and his tired old pageant has been getting loads of free publicity. Of course, after this year….it will be only be number and dumber presentation of women appearing to be ditzy and polite as the stand in bikinis and stilletos ready to be set up by judges with agendas. Boring.

  27. Comment by PerezFan — April 23, 2009 @ 4:39 pm

Thank you for shedding some light on this. I saw this e-mail on Perezhilton.com and was confused about the PB Gardens address and the 561 area code..I didn’t know what the feud was about. Either Ron Manera was dead wrong. And stupid for sending Perez hate mail..what did he think was going to happen??? There’s no excuse for those harsh words.

  28. Comment by djn — April 23, 2009 @ 4:46 pm

I have known Ron for years, he is a great guy. I am sorry this happened to him. Unfortunately, there is evil in the world, and if you are a conservative, look out. If you step out and take a stand, you may need a body guard for the rest of your life! Look what they did to Gov.Palin and Joe the Plumber. The left is perverse, immoral, hate filled and full of hypocrisy. They want to take over our country and push their agenda down our throats. And now, with assistance from the White House, we are all in big trouble. They are now empowered, and they are the generation that call evil good and good evil. Forget the torture issue, used to save lives, we have a President, who for political purposes, aided our enemies when we have troops at war and in harms way on the front lines…I believe that call it treason-but instead we have all the Bush Haters out there and our Sec.of State insulting a former Vice President. Our nation in is for a big, big fall, and we all need to walk carefully and cautiously…

  29. Comment by Dan — April 23, 2009 @ 4:47 pm

I never understand why we are so very concerned with offending someone else when stating our own beliefs. If you believe in same sex marriage, so be it. If not, like me, you don’t. If my beliefs offend you, that is your problem, not mine. I’m not calling you names, I’m not calling into question anything about you. It doesn’t make me a bad person, nor you. I means we disagree. It’s ok to disagree. And if you are offended by me, ignore me, because I guarantee I’ll be ignoring you.

  30. Comment by FrankB — April 23, 2009 @ 5:02 pm

This guy probably should have hid his name or email from Perez but he’s gutzy to stand out there in the wind and face the whole gay attack squad. What is with these counter culture gays that beleive the whole country must right away buy into their radical far left ideology? Bottom line is Perez should have his ugly a$$ sued off for interfering with the guy’s photography business. Perez put his email out there for no other reason then to cause harm to him. If I need a photographer - I will call this guy Manera bc he stands up for women and his beliefs.

  31. Comment by Scott — April 23, 2009 @ 5:21 pm

I read through these comments and laughed, cringed and just shook my head and some of the things people said. We are a pathetic nation when we let something like this idiot affect us. The sad thing is this nation needs to recognize everyone as equal..This whole marriage thing is pathetic too, people are so focused on the “definition of marriage”. Well things change, and it is time for change, and it’s going to happen sooner or later. So we all including myself who has been married for 30 years, might as well get used to it.

  32. Comment by Patrick — April 23, 2009 @ 6:06 pm

I can’t believe this coldhearted snake of a man(Perez Hilton)could call Ms. California a dumb “profanity”. This society is losing all of its morals. Perez should be taken off his website because all he does is sit around in his house eating a bag of Frito Lays writing ludacris befowlments to people. Back in the day it was taboo to even swear. Now it is normal. Ms. Cali did not even try to offend him but he had to take it far and persecute her for values and beliefs. This country was created on amendments, and Perez Hilton makes a fool of a poor girl. There has to be something to stop anymore of this. How can a man whos not even married be asked a question about marriage? I do forgive him because he is a fad, that’ll fade away like any other piece of nonsense that graced headlines in the past decade. We are a people of change, and change will come one day and we’ll wish that we wouldve been more caring to everybody we know and don’t know. I hope as a lesson for everyone who tries to defame people. It is only jealousy and beauty is only skin deep.

  33. Comment by Marquita — April 23, 2009 @ 6:17 pm

Who is this little twerp Perez Hilton……he needs to get a life. The girl has as much right to her opinion as he has to his. What a scuze ball. The silent majority are starting to speak up and when they get their full voice…Perez and your ilk look out.

  34. Comment by luckysnp — April 23, 2009 @ 10:09 pm

Carrie Prejean is a georgeous human specimen. Perez hilton is an ugly insect. Why a roach like Hilton is allowed to insult a beautiful lady is a symptom of how far the left has sunk in this country.

  35. Comment by Judith White — April 23, 2009 @ 10:10 pm

A slip of the keyboard? Not only were your comments to Perez homophobic and hateful, and the kind of stuff that could get a middle schooler expelled, but your defense of Prejean is sexist and paternalistic! He didn’t exactly pick her up off the street, shove a microphone in her face, and demand that she reveal her innermost values and beliefs to the public. I don’t mind sharing the country with religious bigots, and Prejean is honest, forthright and entitled to her opinion. I draw the line, however, at having a bigot represent me to the rest of the world, and I understand why she lost and why Perez was offended. Our Constitution guarantees us a secular state. We will ultimately have gay civil marriage, because the only argument against it is religious. Prejean’s church will never be forced to conduct same-sex marriages if they do not condone them, because in this country we have religious freedom. Prejean will never be forced to join a church that condones same-sex marriage, because in this country we have religious freedom. If Prejean wants religious freedom and the right to voice her opposition to gay marriage, then she has to accept that all states will soon approve it. That’s the answer she should have given.

  36. Comment by Rudy — April 23, 2009 @ 10:44 pm

Perez Hilton went to far. He is not the voice of America or of the gay community. Ms. Runner Up is welcomed to her opinion and that is why she was asked, right? Well, Perez Hilton is a sad commentary of someone who is not tolerant but expect others to be tolerant of him. He needs to grow up and become a responsible gay American and allow others their thoughts, opinions and beliefs…besides just his. In a time when our country needs healing, Perez Hilton should of been the bigger person and allowed her comments as part of the contest and not made it personal. He allowed his personal feelings to dictate his emotions and now we have this big fiasco in America over someones inability to acknowledge a fellow Americans beliefs and opinion. So sad.

  37. Comment by Andre A. — April 23, 2009 @ 10:52 pm

I believe the commentor above is a heterophobe. Everyone who does not share her wacky, radical, far-left position is a “bigot.” There is no bigger bigot than Perez Hilton. All gay militants are famous for name calling and screaming “intolerence.” Ironically, they are the most intolerent of all. There is a hilarious Youtube on Hilton. Go to Youtube and search for “R.I.P. Perez Hilton!” if you need a good laugh!

  38. Comment by American — April 24, 2009 @ 12:26 am

Since when is “freedom of speech” politically incorrect? I can’t believe some of the comments coming from American citizens. Miss Prejean stood up for her principles and morals. She is absolutely correct in giving her opinion and shows more maturity and strength of character than most people today. What did Martin Luther King say about “judge a person by their character?” Oh I forgot, that’s not for the far left liberals who expect everyone to bow down to their demands. So who is divisive, arrogant, and mentally bankrupt?

  39. Comment by K — April 24, 2009 @ 1:17 am

Personally, I think Perez is a teeny weenie who is jealous of Miss California because SHE is a beauty and he is only a hateful old queen who is a pimple on the behind of humankind.

If he can call her the names he did, then being called what he was called is acceptable. I hear gay men call each other that all the time, and the women who hang out with them do it too. So, what’s the big deal. Certainly not Perez - he is just a teeny weeny who will be dragging around in a ratty dressing gown doing an imitation of life. How utterly boring.

  40. Comment by Marie — April 24, 2009 @ 1:20 am

Okay, wait, I’m confused. I thought we were talking about that clown Perez Hilton. How in the world did this already pointless subject turn into “death to the left?” Do NOT group everyone who thinks even slightly to the left in with that attention-seeking, insanely disgusting, foul-mouthed little ant. I consider myself a moderate liberal, and I wouldn’t support that idiot or his behavior if my life depended on it. Miss Prejean had the right to speak her beliefs without getting attacked, end of story.

  41. Comment by Nomad — April 24, 2009 @ 2:46 am

  46. Comment by LaLuna — April 24, 2009 @ 8:09 am

Hilton is a nobody, a disgusting fat loser with nothing going for him except creating chaos. He is dumb, disgusting and unsophisticated. He is an insult on the gay community, representing them as ignorant, vengefull and loud mouthed, which in most instances is not the case. Ms. California is allowed to speak her mind no matter if she agrees with gay marriage or not. FREEDOM OF SPEECH and oppinion! Mr. Manera also has a RIGHT to speak his mind without fearing backlash and insults from an idiot nobody like Hilton. His only mistake was the use of the innapropriate word “fag”.

  47. Comment by Steve — April 24, 2009 @ 8:11 am

To Ms. White, the Constitution does not guarantee a secular state, the guarantees of the First Amendment are to the rights to worship, speak, publish, assemble and raise greivance with the government. There is only a prohibition against any law abridging the practice of religion by individuals, not the removal of religion from government. The government is not to consider a particular religious doctrine in its dealings with people, not that it should be “sanitized” of any religious aspects in its moral perspective. This is a terrible misinterpretation of the Constitutional language by activist judges who used personal bias rather than historical perspective to determine their findings. The argument against gay marriage does have religious backers. There are also others who recognize it as biologically abberant. No species can continue if it were to become the norm, it is a fringe and non-survivable entity from a scientific perspective. Much like the concept of “entitlements” for economic non-contributors, why must we be burdened societally with the costs of a cultural abberation which provides little in the way of gain and edurance of species?

Why do people insist on blaming others racist, ignorant comments on the political left or right? She has her opinion, he has his. LET IT GO for crying out loud.

There are so many things in this country that could use this kind of attention, and if half of the people whining and crying about who said what would stand together like adult human beings, we could actually do something productive.

But here we sit, blaming our decisions on others and shifting the focus to places it does not need to be.
I challenge all of you - including Mr Manera and Mr Hilton - to do something worthwhile with your time, rather than hurling slurs and ignorant comments.

  50. Comment by Ron Manera — April 24, 2009 @ 10:21 am

I guess I should weigh in on this…

First, my comments to Mario Lavandeira, aka, Perez Hilton, were contained in a private email to an arrogant, repulsive bully who had called a fine young lady a “dumb bitch,” and worse, to a national audience.

Hilton decided to share that email on his ridiculous website for whatever attention and mileage he thought he could gain from doing so.

In those comments I used a word that has been apparently put on the “PC cannot use” list. I didn’t check the list and apologize to any one that was offended.

However, I have no anti-gay agenda and have probably given less then 3 minutes of my life to pondering the issue of same-sex marriage. I have no dog in that race and was not making a political or moral statement on gays.

I have always hated bullies and was simply defending Miss California against one of the most disgusting, cowardly bullies in popular culture: Perez Hilton.

Judith White knows nothing about the constitution of the United States of America, maybe she is reading some other countries constitution. The fact is and always will be that this woman has been jammed up for speaking her opinion in this so-called “Free Country” that we are supposedly living in.
Just as Judith White says in her blog above, that if Prejean wants to state her opinion she should have given some PC “no answer reply” like our politicians give us all the time. Please, no honesty in our country. I agree with many of you that this is not about gay rights or even bigotry, it is about just plain mean spirited abuse at the hands of someone who craves any type of attention (even bad). Ron, I don’t know you but I want you to know that I felt the same way as you did, It just seemed so mean and cruel what this Perez fool was calling this lady for no other reason than speaking her opinion. You were no more mad than I was and I probably would have used some words that would have bit me back too considering the circumstances. You have plenty of support and I hope that you can make that fool pay for his arrogance.

This entire fiasco should be blamed on Donald Trump. He never should have allowed such a controversial question and asked by a known gay to boot who has no tolerance for any other answer other than his own belief. It is highly possible that she lost the competition because she answered it honestly rather than placating to politics. Hilton would have rated her at the lowest score thus skewing her overall results. Donald Trump should be fired for being so stupid but again, it is about ratings–about the “art of the deal” to him, at the sacrifice of others.

ok, im happy that he sent that stuff to hilton, i dont giva damn about some guy that discides to prove his point by putting a personal email up on a website that gets hits and he knew it would spark a reaction in his gay army, Manera will be the first person i call if i ever need his services JUST because he did what he felt was right and had to suffer because of what the majority of americans who know who he is think anyway

I think Ron is BRILLIANT! Look at the publicity he’s getting. His business will eventually prosper while that slime ball, prima donna, celebrity wanna be Hilton will eventually fade away like a bad fad. Shame on the pageant for having him on the show and as a judge no less. He asked an innocent contestant (who’s not running for a government office by the way and won’t be signing any gay rights bills in the near future!) a self-serving, self-centered question and then nationally bashed her for giving an honest answer. That worm will eventually crawl back into what ever hole he crawled out of a few years ago and no one will remember his name! I’m neiher anti or pro-gay. To each his or hers own I say and live by. But that bleeping idiot is a menace to ANY society and needs to be brought down!!

[...] First we note the tolerance of a celebrity blogger who previously, viciously attacked a beauty pageant contestent for honestly answering a question he posed.  Apparently honest feedback on his blog isn’t appreciated either. [...]

It’s been a while since this topic has been posted and commented on. Since then a lot has happened in the Carrie Prejean drama, but nothing that really changes anything here.

Yes, the use of “fag” was ill-advised. I’ll bet, though, that if we were somehow able to dissect the thought process behind it, we’d find that the epithet was driven by Hilton’s appalling behavior and persona, rather than homosexuals in general.

If the gay community intends to present itself in the most positive light, the LAST thing it needs is an advocate like Perez Hilton. He did more damage to the cause he claims to represent by his attack on Prejean than any number of virulent detractors ever could.

    So, with this in mind:

Manera’s crime: Using a derisive term for a gay male. OK, agreed, not good. But certainly very strongly provoked, easily ascribable to a rather understandably emotional reaction.

Hilton’s crime: VIOLENTLY, vicously, vituperatively, vitriolically (alliteration unintended, it just happened) derisive, demeaning, disgusting (see alliteration, above) terms–MULTIPLE terms–cutting right to the core of respect for women, indirectly, any human being. Not the product of a momentary surge of emotion; rather, planned and scripted. Apologized for, weakly, which apology was soon afterward retracted. Again, with thought, not impulse.

Beyond just the few obscene terms, entire presentation a scurrilous slur on an entire class, which is what we call bigotry and discrimination. Supreme demonstration of intolerance by one speaking in the very name of tolerance. That is what we call hypocrisy.

The result? Huge volumes of accusations of bigotry, discrimination and hypocrisy–against Prejean, not Hilton.

To my knowledge, no DDoS or other attack of consequence has been perpetrated by supporters of Prejean against Hilton. Hilton’s supporters, on the other hand, mount something of the kind to not just insult Manera, but to do real harm to his business.

Tell me why calling a gay man a fag is a huge crime while calling a woman a cunt is not. Just try.
