Palm Beach Sheriff’s officials went “James Bond” on a lieutenant they suspected of slacking off at work in the troubled Belle Glade district, and canned him after a satellite tracked him out-of-pocket.
But Lt. Larry Brush, who was returned to civilian life a year ago, is fighting to get his job back — with back pay plus interest.
Brush supervised the infamous Sgt. Brent Raban, a.k.a. The Punisher. Raban was demoted after he suggested on Facebook that he relishes beating suspects. Two deputies who worked for Raban were fired.
But last year, it was Brush who was booted. PBSO accused him of being glued to his desk while Raban and his band ruled the streets of the impoverished city.
Even worse: A satellite-tracking device secretly placed in Brush’s squad car showed that, when he did venture outside, he’d leave the district for hours at a time. He was known to drive home to Boca for dinner or check out early.
Internal Affairs also used the routing of his cell phone calls to determine his whereabouts.

“We’re OK with that,” said John Kazanjian, leader of the local Police Benevolent Association. The union represents Brush. “We just don’t think he should have been fired for this.”
Kazanjian said the PBA will help Brush get his job back in arbitration this fall.
Meanwhile Col. Mike Gauger, PBSO’s director of law enforcement operations, said the use of GPS technology to gather information on employees is “extremely rare.”

“In my 38 years in law enforcement, I’ve seen it twice,” he said. “Our contract with the PBA says that we can’t use satellite tracking unless there are serious disciplinary problems.”
According to Brush’s I.A. file, the 18-year veteran was fired for insubordination, neglect of duty and improper conduct, lying.
The investigation found that Brush ignored a direct order from Gauger that he stop leaving the violent district during his shift, and that he supervise his troops more directly.
Yet, weeks later, Brush responded to only four incidents in a six-day period. There were 1,221 incidents in his district that week. And Brush continued meeting colleagues in diners at least 40 minutes out of Belle Glade, then tried to cover it up.
Brush, 45, would only say he’s been unemployed for nearly a year.
“We made a freedom of information request and we found no other covert surveillance of any PBSO employee except for me, and for a non-criminal offense,” Brush said. “I’ll leave it at that.”

I agree with the trackind device placed in the Vehicle. There have been many times when I have seen Sherriffs congregate in one area. Such as a Park and just sit around. Why aren’t they patrolling? I also think it would be a good idea to place a device in the patrol car to track the speed the sherriffs travel at. I understand in an emergency situation, expediency is needed but, I can’t even count how many times I have seen an officer speeding past only then to pull into a Conveinient Mart or other place of Business. Why should they get away with that?

Cops Lie, steal, Cheat, sell drugs and slap people with fake charges such as, assualt on an officer all the time. they usually save the assualt on officers for when they are the ones doing the beating to an innocent man.. My opinion is that most of them suck, but not all.. i ran into a super nice cop the other day, he was on point and polite. he seemed like a good old school cop.. why cant there be more cops that dont abuse their badge?
It sounds like its time to dump the Police Benevolent Association.
No matter what a cop does….like cheat the public out of their salary or allegedly make porn movies or terrorize citizens through beatings or alleged sexual attacks at some Sheriff Offices, the Police Benev Assoc. seems to almost always terrorize the pertinent dept through threats of litigation etc, to try to get the deadbeat or worse cop a financial settlement or reemployemtn.
When the contract comes up…bust it…and save the taxpayers a few billion dollars.
In the case of the Palm Beach County Commission SO much corruption and waste has come to light just throught the Palm Beach Post that we can be dead certain that cutting the PBSO budget at least 25% is not only possible but would appear to be a LONG NEEDED PURGE of their internal dead wood and rotten personnel.
This should make the good cops happy and balance our budget.
People, mostly cops, argue that the people getting caught or only a small percentage of the cops…this is true…..you can bet that for every cop who gets caught about 25 or 30 get away with this stuff forever and if they do get caught chances are hight the Police B Assoc will get them back to terrorizing the public while in uniform, somewhere soon.
Cut the PBSO Budget 25% should be a campaign goal.
And this is no offense to good cops. This is to flush the sludge that makes them all look bad.

This guy is not PBSO material and it is quite clear. He has taken advantage of many situations, primarily the fact of being left alone to do so many unethical things while being paid to work. The high ranking officers of the PBSO are as guilty as the middle and the street cop. They lie, cheat and steal..and they have no morals or values. You would only know if you actually lived with it. Some of the Colonels and Majors are just as undeserving of their jobs. The problem is that the people that work at PBSO are afraid to sing about the indescretions of the top-dogs…but the people at the top should be careful because it will only take one singer to bring them down. Some of these people with 24 or more years should be out on their ears and losing their pensions. They command by fear… Beware a scorned woman …people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

This incident happened a year ago. The Raban thing happened over 8 months ago. The porn issue was years ago. The Post is bringing all of this up now and all the public sees is big problems at PBSO. Last time I checked, a deputy was just as human as I am and they are not infallible. What amazes me is that you post comments about red flags and PBSO is the mafia and blah blah blah. These issues do not happen every day and the majority of the people on duty protecting us have never and probably will never make Page 2 Live like this, but nobody seems to realize this. There are 4,000 employees at PBSO. Yes, these people were wrong. Yes, these people deserved to be punished for their actions. Why generalize and say the whole operation is corrupt? This stuff happens every day in the private sector and sometimes even worse. Continue to throw stones, but the next time your house is getting burglarized or you’ve been in a car accident or your loved one has been mugged in broad daylight, are you not going to call the police for help?
Lt. Larry Brush was committed honest services fraud and dereliction of duty. How does it make it okay for any sworn officer of the law to lie about his conduct. The citizens of PBC are well served by the our Sheriffs Dept. Lieutenant Larry was lucky he didnt go to jail. He put you and a risk by with his dereliction of duty and responsibiliies. Congrats to the GPS ppl that put this rat where he belongs - out of uniform.
i agree with copwatch. Except for the “trackind” device. I think he ment “tracking device”. But, anyway, people who want to be cops now these days want the job, but, they don’t want to do the job. But then, how easy is the actual police I.Q. & personality test?

I am really saddened over all of the problems that have been revealed, concerning the Sheriffs Dept. I put in twenty there, it was the best law enforcement agency in the state. Yes,there were people who b roke the rules, but they were punished. Then the union came along. Unionization is the worst thing that ever happened to law enforcement.It handcuffs the investigators, protects the bad apples, and makes it hard to relieve the department of the bad apples.I have forty years in law enforcement, I got out because of the trend that was being taken.The new Officers were not dedicated like the ones that I knew when we
would have worn the uniforn and worked for almost nothing. Police officers were respected, not hated. I am ashamed when I see some the actions on the cops programs. The macho,body building, uncaring, money hungry and often dirty, police officer of today, has brought all of the disrespect upon themselves and have no other to blame. I am glad that the Post is investigating. The sheriff has to grab hold of the department and take charge. Suspend, fire and demote,and arrest. Let the union fight, they can’t win them all. Plus, it will use up all of their money on attorneys.
Take away private use of Police Vehicles. These cars should not be used for personal use to drive children to baseball, and other sports, pick up groceries and go shopping at publix. It’s complete waste of public money. Make the Broward and St Lucie deputy’s drive to Palm Beach motorpool and pick up their cars. Why should citizens of Palm Beach pay for these people to drive 50 miles home. It’s nuts. That would save MILLIONS in the budget that everyone is worried about.
I have a better idea for you clowns. Get rid of the police and let you animals fend for yourself. Let’s see how long you last. I don’t agree with poor behavior but most police officers are over worked and underpaid.

The reason that we know that only a TINY FRACTION of PBSO criminals get caught is I was told that someone read the Court Decision on the PBSO PORN case and the form Internal Affairs Officer at PBSO, Paula somebody I think, allegedly ruled that no DEPARTMENT ETHICS RULES were violated or something like that…..and of course, she is now implicated in a HUGE PBSO SCANDAL herself.
Let the FOXES watch the Hen House and this is what you get…get rid of PBA and PBSO and do not give them any more money…CUT THEM….more cops on the road NEVER mean less crime , with PBSO it probably might mean MORE CRIME…..it seems.
I admire and respect 99% of police officers, but I have to say that I can’t imagine anyone who works in the private sector and goes home while “on the clock” and continues to do so, and lie about it, and use company vehicles for personal use, to actually hope to stay employed. Performance based compensation is the most effective motivator in a truly free market - and it’s clearly obvious in this case that this person was on the taxpayers dime, and taking full advantage.

I have sat here and read all these comments..WOW..I am seriously shocked. Shocked at how many citizens out there dislike police. IN EVERY profession from Doctors to Priests to teachers to police to firefighters to Politicians etc..there are bad in every bunch. BUT to put all in the same group is horrible. I am in Law Enforcement and proud..I have dignity, character, pride. I personally would NEVER embarass myself my family my profession by doing anything illegal, immoral, or wrong period. AND MOST Law Enforcement Officers are the same way. Do I care if GPS is in my car?? HECK NO..follow me..we have computers now in our vehicles which can monitor where we are on the map and how fast we are driving..and cameras will be installed in all vehicles soon as well. I SAY GREAT! Those with nothing to hide..hide nothing! Sgt. Raban, the Deputy with the porn, and others like that do not represent or reflect the rest. They should be fired..they took an oath, and when the day came they could not live by it, they need to go. Thats th way it should be in all professions.
Next: as far as driving our patrol cars home..I am in this profession and I somewhat agree. I feel if your a Deputy Sheriff in this county..you should be able to have a take home vehicle. It has been proven that Patrol cars parked in driveways and parking lots deter crime. Just the presence of the vehicle alone. ALSO I cannot count how many times while driving my car off duty I have stopped to help a motorist who is stranded, broke down etc. Or helped back up another officer even from other agencies. Also been at a traffic light, and an accident happens, and I am there to help right away. In my personal vehicle, I could still help, but only to a small extent. If you live out of county..well I feel its a perk. Once your out of this county, you really cannot do much out of your jurisdiction. Out of county deputies are only permitted to drive to and from work and nothing else.I just feel living in the county makes a presence..out of the county does not. I remember being in a drug store parking lot about to go in when a shoplifter went running out. He saw my patrol car and literally STOPPED..I was able to detain him. That is the perks of patrol cars being driven off duty. Not to mention citizens feeling safer..and most do. If any cars get taken off the road due to budget cuts I think it should be civilan take home cars first. I actually wish for 90 days the Sheriff would pull all cars from being taken home. You would see and feel the difference. Trust me you wud wish we would have them back. Not to mention theres not enough room for all deputies to leave their car at “motorpool” AND if we share cars the wear and tear on them would increase and so would repair bills.
Lastly..to the retired Deputy who posted on here about how “bad” Deputies are compared to when he was a Deputy. And how cops back in “HIS DAY” were respected not hated..welp I can gurantee back in his day the community as a whole respected themselves more..there for the most part back in the day was not 10 year old kids with guns..kids with no parents around..19 yar old moms with 6 children..gang violence, drugs, thugs making DVD’ AND HANDING THEM OUT FOR FREE for people to watch them waving automatic rifles in the air beating and robbing innocent people ON CAMERA!! The lack of respect, order, parental control, etc..is why cops are not respected anymore. Yes there are certain people in this profession I wonder how the heck did they get in this job..and I am as angry and hurt as anyone that those few bad apples get through..but I CAN ASSURE YOU that the Sheriff is doing all he can to weed out those few. Have faith in the majority of us who are out there leaving our families to protect strangers and risk taking a bullet to the head every day or night to keep everyone else safe. Oh and one more thing when you see officers “sitting around” car to car in a parking lot talking..alo of times we are giving extra presence in an area or just catching up on paperwork or previous calls(TRUST ME THERES A TON) or just saying hello and taking a break for a couple. Isnt ironic that a cop can get fired for oing home early or leaving the area for a meal yet we pay firefighters full salary to sleep and eat on duty, work out and do almost nothing? Where is the real justice?
You have good cops & bad cops. People tend to blame everyone other than themselves when they get pulled over by a police officer - it’s never “my” fault. Police officers are human too, but mistakes happen. I respect the badge - but all you officers need to realize by the nature of your work you are held to a higher standard. Don’t take the job if you can’t honor that standard. I’ve heard horror tales of why women who work graveyard shifts always carpool and you think that must be just a tall tale until you hear about some low life officer that makes it think it’s true. And with the nature of any officer’s job, it makes it even more important to be an upstanding person who is a honor to the badge not a person who helps another officer hide their actions instead of stopping them. You hear about that thin blue line, where protecting another officer is more important than stopping the harm their fellow officer does. Sorry, but from what this article said that loser doesn’t deserve to get his badge back - he’s already dishonored it with his behavior. I’m not surprised he’s still unemployed - who wants to hire former police officer with bad work ethics. There are plenty of honest people out there that need work.
No one is complaining about good cops doing their jobs.
No one is complaining about a department that is not out of control systematically.
No one is complaining about a Police Benevelent association that takes care of WRONGED COPS.
This Dept and Many, Many Cops in all south florida have now turned into a Bad Tribe…..heeeck, look at the MULTTIPLE COPS in Broward that were just caught on VIDEO…talking about and later writing a FALSE POLICE REPORT to set - up a citizen for crimes and get a COP OFF…a cop with a TERRIBLE driving record on duty anyway….not one cop seemed to think, on video, that their was anything wrong with this….so its pretty easy to assume they do this “Disneyland” writing on Citizens all of the time..
The GOOD COP image is a myth.

Relax, as a member of the general public, we’re savvy enough to know that when stories about crummy cops appear, that not all cops are bad.
The public does expect that the bad apples need to be booted. When there is cover up, lack of enforcement of rules is when the public goes crazy.
That responsibility falls to the big guys…and it’s those that “sit behind the desk” that the publc grows angry with. DO something to get rid of these jerks that ruin the reputation of other police officers.
The buddy-buddy thing is tiresome, dis-spiriting and is “old time”. Clean those guys out. Pay the deputies more who work in the bad spots as Belle Glade. Make it a place where officer want to go. Put more officers out there.
It does seem like it is time for the oldsters to retire. Those old faces, keep old practices and don’t SEEM to be on top of things. They seem to be futzing around, inadequate…tell them early retirement-to save the county money.
It IS time for the police to give up their FREE police vehicles and drive to a motor pool to pick up their police cars. Those cars ARE abused. The cop in the neighborhood uses his unmarked to cart his family EVERYWHERE while his own vehicleS are left in the garage and driveway. That’s abuse, clear out abuse that the public can’t afford to be funding. Cut it! The public is getting angry over this poor policy in the contract. It’s like giving a cop a free car funded by the public!
Thanks to all the officers who get and put their lives on the line EVERY single day. You are appreciated. You guys should get superior pay, more than those county commissioners, mayors, administrators and lawyers. Their lives are not on the line. They just waste the county’s money.
And finally, get rid of Barry Krisher. The guy “retired”, gets his retirement pay and then Bradshaw hires him at the department. The county does not need another desk jockey on the dole. Bradshaw could have hired another deputy…or two.

To the person who commented that he feels the GOOD COPS should get superior pay and are appreciated..thank you! But you also said in your post that FREE cars should be left at motorpool and we shouldnt be allowed to drive our families everywhere off duty in them..well WE have money taken out of our pay EVERY paycheck to use those vehicles off duty. They arent FREE. Also..if you feel the good cops should recieve superior pay whats th difference of letting us use patrol cars and take them home. Listen..patrol cars being driven off duty has been proven to be a deterrant in communities..I already posted n the benefits of it, so I will not repeat myself. Those cars ARE NOT ABUSED..we have to to care for them and most of us do. Also all te stuff ( weapons tools computer ticket writer) all that stuff is like having an office on wheels..if every shift we have to take all that stuff out of our personal vehicles, put it into the patrol car then take it all out end of shift..it will take forever. In jobs ALOT of companies offer perks. If us being able to take our vehcle home that we pay for is a perk so be it. It benefits more than it hinders. Like I said before if we need to cut back start with the civlian employees take home cars..they really have no reason to be driving take home cars home and drive them all around. Trus me when I tell you I have neighbors who came to me when I moved in the development happy as heck that they have a patrol car now parked next door to them.
If a normal citizen is caught on video discussing, planning and filing a false police report….he get’s charged and booked into jail right away.
Everyone saw last week multiple BSO Deputies discussing and then filing a FALSE police report to imprison a young girl and free a bad cop.
But they are “suspended with pay” during investigation.
Charge them just like anyone else, fire them and make them post bond prior to trial….just like any other citizen.

Why is the PBA wasting members on this issue. Brush was wrong and was warned but still continued the same behavior. He had a job to perform and he failed. He’s not worthy to wear a uniform even a security guard uniform.

I appreciate your good work, but you DON’T deserve to drive your work vehicles home to use as personal vehicles.
Yea, I know you pay for those cars….I’d like the same deal, $10 a week for gas. Big deal you have to drag everything out of your car at the end of the day (am sure that will be in your next contract negotiations…extra 10 minutes of pay for unloading/loading the car–poor babies).
A deterrant…not if it’s unmarked. A deterrant…when you have your family IN the car and there’s a problem, do you ALL stop at an accident, crime scene? Does your wife put out the orange cones and your kids do the crime scene tape..give me a break!
There is NO way, when your family is in the public’s vehicle, that you are going to assist. That could cause complications and MORE ISSUES.
While you and your family jump into the cruiser, your own vehicle sits at home with no extra mileage (you pay less insurance for less miles driven) on it and you don’t use up your personal vehicles gas.
You guys are robbing the public. Arrest yourself.
NO! TO TAKE HOME VEHICLES. Drive to a MOTOR POOL. That’s the way it should work. And BTW, do you all have it in your contract to be paid for “dressing”, getting prepared for and after work?
Thanks again for your work. It is appreciated; policing is a dangerous job and you don’t know what’s going to happen from day to day, but drive your OWN car to and from work and stop screwing the public.
And, in the western suburb I live in, there are police cars from WPB, Coral Springs….a lot of Broward vehicles and even an emergency van from Broward! You guys are robbers!
Its funny..the person says they appreciate my work and putting my life on the line etc..but then n the same breath calls me a ROBBER and tells me to arrest myself..wow. So the Sheriff takes away us taking our patrol cars home..whats next..what would you like him to cut next?? P.S. do not sit here and thank me for doing my job and tell me you appreciate it then call me a criminal and a robber..it is really disheartening..by the way I personally do not put my kids in my patrol car..I use my personal vehicle when I drive them around..that is my personal choice..with as many people that is out here who HATE Police Officers/Deputies..and I must have been blinded, because after reading this site I am seeing it is alot more than I though..I would not chance outting my children in my patrol vehicle and have someone try to harm my kids..BUT when I am alone I do ride in my patrol car off duty. and TRUST ME I do stop I do help..period…in our policies we are techinally a Deputy Sheriff on duty at all times. We accept your apology on the wasting of our tax dollars, now do us a favor and just do the job you’re paid for and shut your pie hole. Nobody made you become a cop that was your choice, we as tax payers go to work so you can get paid. Why do cops feel we some how owe them some form of greater thanks for doing their jobs. If you are so put out by the tax payer why don’t you find a new job? A lot of the cops on the PBSO are as immoral as the criminals, go back and review this page and you can see all the stupid things the PBSO are doing and all Ric seems to do is transfer them to the Glades.

The amount of hypocrisy that goes on in the hallowed halls of pbso is mind numbing. So, we have all of these social miscreants getting in serious trouble…..not like, hey the deputy was speeding….no, it’s serious vile criminal crap. Like Kronspimper and her tangled web of lies and sexual acts, this makes for a great sit-com…..her dingbat husband crying to the sheriff: “sniff, sniff, Paula is sleeping around”….no kidding, its been going on for years, I am begining to suspect that their marriage is a ruse and Dave is really Gay.
So, she violates SOP, violates other women’s marriages, lies about it. She’s protected….how far up the “chain” of command did her skills go? seems pretty high. her whole career is a scam, its not based on merit, or hard work….so, she got knocked out one time while Ken was fighting the bad guy…..she’s not a real cop. Another name that has to be brought up is SGT. Keith Burns, Great cop, Great leader, Great American. He was found not guilty of crap charges brought against him, the Sheriff and Kaz and Geiger keep stalling on his arbitration hearing that is owed to him. They are trying to out resource him with the County taxpayers money. Meanwhile they hire and hire back known stalkers, fat bodies that cant make the basic FDLE run, liars, guys named John Weiss III that tried on several occasions to kill themselves in the past.
