Channel 12 parent company to file for bankruptcy
The parent company of WPEC-Channel 12 is expected to file for bankruptcy Tuesday, according to several newspaper reports.
Freedom Communications, the company started 70 years ago to air out Libertarian values, may file as early as Tuesday, the New York Times reports today.
What does it mean for the likes of star anchors Liz Quirantes and Curt Fonger and John Matthews?
Not much, a station insider tells Page2Live.
“This station is one of their most valuable assets,” the source said. “Viewers won’t see a difference. We probably won’t go to a single anchor format or anything.”
In addition to the CBS affiliate, the company also owns 30 newspapers, including the large Orange County Register in California.
“We continue to work with our lenders on the capital structure of the company,” said company President Doreen Wade. “She wouldn’t comment further.”
WPEC took several economic measures this year, including layoffs in January, unpaid furloughs in March and the summer announcement that salaries would be cut by five percent.

Liz Quirantes is a pretty good newscaster and her easy smile lends an air of warmth and familiarity to the news room, however she has this quirky way of complementing the news with sad facial expressions if the story is about a puppy dog that was ran over by a car or some little boy that is missing. This may be a reflection of her sweet dispossition, but it is very annoying in a newscaster. You don’t see Barbara Walters or Katty Curie changing their facial expressions to match the content of the news.
