Wellington submarine builder Herve Jaubert, a former French spy who donned Muslim garb to flee the Middle Eastern emirate of Dubai last year, is suing that country’s largest corporation.

Jaubert, 53, filed in a Martin County court in Stuart, accusing the semi-private multinational Dubai World of fraud, false imprisonment, abuse of process and defamation, according to the paperwork. DW’s interests are so closely intertwined with those of government officials that Jaubert’s action amounts to suing the emirate.

Jaubert, who built $15 million-personal yellow Seahorse submarines in Stuart, says he wants to stop Dubai’s attacks on his reputation as a marine engineer.

“The ball is rolling,” Jaubert said. “I want to clear my name and expose the lies of Dubai.”

Martin County may seem like a strange venue for the suit, but Jaubert was first approached by Dubai officials while he was at work in Stuart.

Jaubert was visited by DW boss Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem and his entourage in late 2003, according to the lawsuit. The sultan bought one submarine. Six months later, the royal returned for another and proposed to Jaubert to move his operation to Dubai. By the summer of 2004, that was a done deal.

Things, however, quickly went awry. Jaubert was accused of fraud as authorities claimed the submarines weren’t being built properly. Security forces took his passport, making it impossible for him to leave, and threatened to torture him.

In time, Jaubert shipped his wife and sons back to his Aero Club home in Welly and planned his escape.

Sporting the dress of a conservative Muslim woman to cover up scuba gear, Jaubert walked to a beach and swam underwater to a dingy that then took him to a waiting sailboat. He then sailed to India, where he obtained a new passport. He’s writing a book about his ordeal.

“I suffered a considerable loss of money,” Jaubert said. “I am innocent, but it was impossible for me to defend myself in Dubai.

“I do feel like David versus Goliath, but everybody knows who won that fight.”

I have been a Sea Captain and Boat Builder for 35 years and have turned down several Project managers positions in Dubai on multi-million dollar projects. These guys have a reputation for being Idiots, Liars, and screwing up the project beyond repair and then blaming the “Western Boy”. If you do your home work you will find some of these projects have had a dozen managers just for this very reason.

    Hi,

I feel proud as an Indian that India has been a place of refuge for any person, especially people of religious persecution.

    Thanks

You have to be really naive or very very greedy to trust arabs. They are incompetent liars who always
blame other people for their screwups.

The huge, negative impact of Islam is yet to be felt. A book was recently completed that proves that John Lennon and Paul McCartney were the two witnesses. The book goes on to explain that the prophecies they delivered show us that it is from the religion of Islam that the anti-Christ will come forth from. Read the entire story at http://www.thegoodguise.wordpress.com. After reading the book, take another look at what is going on in the world today. You will never look at the world in the same way again. Be a part of it all; the prophecies they delivered also require action. You, or someone you know or work for, may be the one that takes the prophecies and completes what is required.

Mr Jaubert doesn’t deserve any of our pity. He should have researched Dubai and how the Indian Hindu and Christian Philapinos(SP) are treated. I would be scared even to work for a large multi national corp there. You can get thrown under the bus very easily!

A lawsuit is about justice, it has nothing to do with pity, mac are you suggesting that he should not sue them so that arabs can get away with it and screw more people?

The Saudis and Emirates SCREW so many millions of workers, he will get no where with the lawsuit. He can sue all he want. He better get a LAW FIRM to work on contingincy(SP) basis. They own our country, politicians and courts, don’t see much of a chance for him winning! Has the 911 people got any money out of the Saudis yet? Bed time for Bonzo!

No Muslims should be trusted, ever. The Islam religion perverts their followers’ minds. Even so-called ‘Muslim moderates’ whom attend mosques with ‘moderate’ imams (English-Arabic translation for priests) should not be trusted; they all have the same subversive tendancies with a deep ultimate belief for Sharia Law.
