A Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office big shot who once oversaw the human resources department is under investigation for allegations of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment.
The major, 25-year law enforcement veteran Michael Veccia, has been on administrative leave since May while Internal Affairs investigates.
Among what I.A. is looking into: An affair with a former subordinate nearly half Veccia’s age, the daughter of another PBSO major.
The divorced Veccia is receiving his salary, $156,000 a year, according to PBSO employee records – this, at a time when Sheriff Ric Bradshaw is struggling with budget cuts.
“The major has to be home from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and call in twice a day,” said Teri Barbera, spokeswoman for the agency.
“There are spot checks to make sure he is home during regular business hours.”
It’s routine for those on administrative leave, Barbera says.
The “rat squad,” meanwhile, has six months to complete its work, which includes the in-depth interviews of 30 witnesses. Due date: Oct. 21.

Said the agency’s second in command, Col. Mike Gauger: “Because of the basis of the complaint, we felt it was best to put him on administrative leave. I can’t talk about the investigation.”

Veccia is in charge of agency operations. He is among 14 people on Bradshaw’s executive staff, according to the agency’s website.
According to his employment file, Veccia is in charge of crime analysis, training and contractors. Until two years ago, he also supervised human resources and communications.
Veccia, 52, of Lake Worth, became a deputy in 1984. He joined West Palm Beach PD for a short stint then returned to PBSO for good in 1987. His work evaluations over the years have been glowing and he is known for going up the ranks at supersonic speed. He went from sergeant to lieutenant to captain to major in four years under the then-Sheriff Ed Bieluch.
The details of the Veccia probe are sketchy since the I.A. report won’t be made public until after Bradshaw signs off on it. But a PBSO source tells me that five or six women have complained of sexual harassment.
Another angle is a very public affair that Veccia had with Sandra Smith, a financial analyst in the PBSO budget office.
Smith, 28, worked under Veccia for five years.
In 2007, according to records, they started shacking up together in his house. They’re now living apart.
“I wasn’t working for him then,” said Smith when reached by Page2Live. She declined further comment.
The department insider told me Veccia approached his supervisors in 2007 to tell them he wanted to date Smith and was about to have her move in. That’s when she was transferred from Veccia’s command, where she was a crime analyst.
Smith is the daughter of Veccia’s colleague, Maj. Dan Smith, head of county-wide operations.
There’s another sex-related investigation that I.A. is currently handling. A female lieutenant, Lt. Paula Kronsperger, is alleged to have been carrying on with subordinates and superiors.
$156K are these people on drugs as well? This is an outrage….absolutely!!

Nobody knows whether any charges that may have been brought are true or not. That is what an investigation is for. It is premature for anyone to be passing judgement on this man, who apparently has an outstanding record. As for his salary, does anyone really believe that these salary scales haven’t been reviewed and approved by the powers that be? But here’s my question: why is it that anyone who’s being simply investigated is essentially under house arrest? I understand being on adminnistrative leave while an investigation is pending, but to be confined during normal business hours seems excessive to me. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Exactly what was the crime/worngdoing? this guy even went so far as to inform his adminstration and had her removed from his command… Was there other complaints? Must be, maybe not….

Talk about corruption look at Former Captain Anne Marie Burke. She was removed and put on airport duty . She brandsihed a weapon at Quantico training in Washington D.C.. Her live in gf Sgt. Beth L. Krivda then left her so she would retain her postion within Internal Affairs. She is in charge of crimes against children, scary for she is the real criminal.! She has done sick, psycho things to innocent citizens and ruined lives. Her best friend Lynn had her work for her to get her son back from us when he was 19. Lynn and Krivda went to Delray Judge Vonhoff and lied to declare Tommy incompetent. They then had him sent back to Florida. Lynn threw Tommy into a seedy group home where he was made fun of and abused. Sue Craig the former mngr of the group home now controls Tommy and got him an apt. to live with her. She is taking advantage of a mentally challenged young man. Sue has made sure Tommy has no contact with us, the family who loves him and took him in.

First things first……four months so far for an IA investigation? The investigators or whoever is over them is a problem. What is taking so long??? The fact that the major is on admin leave with pay is not his fault. Bradshaw or Gauger made that decision. Perhaps they should have considered a temp job assignment until the investigation was completed??? The major’s salary for his tenure and position is comparable to other agencies and is not excessive. His rapid movement up the ranks is questionable but that’s the norm at PBSO…..look at Dan Smith! And the source leaking info needs to be fired. That is a serious violation as these investigations are confidential until completed.

From a financial standpoint this is a poorly run agency. The budget strategy is clearly a “protect our own” approach over sound fiscal policy.

Taxpayers need to remember on voting day…People would be shocked to see the salaries at PBSO..Capt Van Reeth, Rics boy from West Palm PD has a wonderful retirement form WPB now look at his salary..hey his wife who also works there just received another promotion..The Lt. Paula under investigation has a great black book with alot of names dates and places…so not much going down in that case…There is a lady who has been on admin leave since Feb. with full salary at home…and no end yet..IA doing a great job hopeing everyone forgets so Ric can keep more friends in power and money…the commisioners are so blind.

Surprisingly, this guy didn’t receive any overtime in 2008. I say surprisingly because it appears everyone else did. Want to be floored? Check out this past Monday’s edition of the Sun Sentinel on-line. They list everyone who received OT pay in 2008 while working for PBSO. It is my opinion that this $11,000,000 expense item is considered reasonable by the PBSO executive staff and that of our County Commissioners. How else could it have happened?

i enjoy reading the negative posts by all the under achieving cops that will never amount to anything. it seems these sorry clowns can only talk behind backs and point fingers and do everything else in the world except their jobs. make sure u get reallll comfortable on road patrol because you arent going much further.these executives u hate on, put in more hours then other cops have off. jealousy is a horrible trait, so keep on dreaming that one day you will be as successful as bradshaw or gauger. these two individuals have changed pbso for the best and will continue to excell in our community of law enforcement
Thank you for that moving speach , gauger/bradshaw , jealous , please , don’t flatter yourself , I would rather be able to live with myself , not to mention the Bradshaw comb-over , and the Gauger over weight issues.
