Update: John Christiansen, Jacknin’s law partner, told me Thursday (Sept. 24) that he talked to Jacknin and that he is doing great. Jacknin should be coming home late next week.

High-profile West Palm lawyer Jay Jacknin, who handled dozens of society divorces, knew since March that he needed heart surgery.

Jacknin

Jacknin

The flashy Jacknin, 61, was dreading the procedure, tellings friends he was worried about not coming home.

His premonition wasn’t too far off.

Jackin reportedly suffered a serious stroke Friday while undergoing heart-valve surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. He remains in intensive care.

“He had a stroke, but he’ll be O.K.,” said Joel Weissman, another family attorney who’s working on a case with Jacknin. Weissman is in constant contact with a Jacknin staffer in Cleveland.

“There are a lot of conflicting rumors. The truth is that Jay will not be incapacitated as a result of the stroke. He’s expected to come home in a few weeks.”

Jacknin’s ex-wife, Phyllis Tobias, is by his side but hasn’t returned calls.

A diminutive man who has been practicing law in West Palm Beach since the mid-’70s, Jacknin is among a handful of lawyers who often handle high-stakes society divorces.

He and partner John Christiansen defended the likes of Roxanne Pulitzer, in her split from powerboat racer John Haggin; Barbie Catalfumo, in her divorce from developer Dan Catalfumo; and more recently, his ex-wife Phyllis, who was accused of murder.

Last year, Phyllis Tobias’ behavior was questioned in the aftermath of the accidental death of her new husband, CNBC analyst Seth Tobias. He was found floating in the pool at the couple’s fancy mansion in Jupiter.

Jacknin represented Phyllis when a family adviser in California claimed Phyllis admitted to him that she killed Seth. She wasn’t charged, and the adviser was discredited.

Colleagues who started learning of Jacknin’s health problems Monday were shocked.

“He’s always been a good sport,” said Joe Farish, another divorce attorney. “He doesn’t have a mean bone in his body.”

I’m sorry to hear he had a stroke, as I’d be sorry to hear anyone had one, but I was in the unfortunate position of having to work for this guy back in the 80s. (I was one of his “ever-revolving door” of staff.) To this day, I’ve never forgotten what a pompous, rude, totally obnoxius (in every way), little blow-hard he was. I worked for him about four days; then walked out, and it was one of the happiest days of my life when the door closed behind me. If he survives this, and I hope he does, perhaps it will teach him that much to his amazement, he’s not God … just a mere mortal (who needs a major attitude adjustment), and the situation will hopefully give him some humility because Lord knows, he could use a huge dose of it.

Reading Farish’s comments about Jay is about as accurate as George’s “Iraq has WMD” and “Our economy is strong!” Please, don’t make me laugh.

..from what I have heard, #8’s restrained comments will be the norm not the exception.

…Of course, watch that attorneys, come out of the woodwork with their banal/cynical praise…(if you really liked someone so much, and knew them for over 30 years, why have you not spokne to them in “a couple of years?)

I have talked to people who have dealt with or worked for those guys…….universally they have allegedly been characterized as Hyper Arrogant POS.

    Neverthe less.

If a near death experience is what it takes to bring anyone off their high-horse…so be it.

Personally, I think a large portion of every BAR Assoc needs to rethink and reboot the purporse of life….sometimes death or near death is the only thing that will make you ponder what’s really important….what really matters in life and in dealing with others….be it socially or in a legal cesspool.

#6, I’ve known him for a very long time too and I can tell you I *HAVE* had *THE PLEASURE* of *NOT* talking to him in quite some time. PS: What’s with his hair? Looks like a cheap home perm gone terribly wrong but I gotta’ say it goes absolutely perfect with his 24/7 sour, hateful attitude.

    Interesting comment #11….

Remember what happened to Mr. Johnny Cochran….

…if an attorney springs an alleged murderer…is that a mortal sin…if the alleged murder is allegedly guilty?

If it is….do attorneys even care as long as they extract a huge fee?

    Just a hypothetical question…..curios creatures…..

Better pitied than despised in many situations……

  15. Comment by bernie m — September 21, 2009 @ 4:22 pm

    Bad perm…maybe…

Looks like a chronically constipated Bernie Madoff.

I know people who have experienced his fir’s handiwork….they allege that it is detestable stuff…..done by people of “unrepeatable” character.

Still, I do not wish him ill will, never having met the man personally…….

But his reputation will not reveal too many true friends I fear…..just a lot of crocodile tears for the man who allegedly sprung the Black Widow…or maybe worse.

  16. Comment by djnfla — September 21, 2009 @ 4:32 pm

My prayers go out to Mr. Jacknin, I hope he has a speedy recovery.

As far as the comments on this article-they are a great example of how depraved our culture has become. A man has a stroke and all those who can hide behind a computer screen use this opportunity to express their vulgar hate. Shame on you people.

  18. Comment by Reap what you sow... — September 21, 2009 @ 4:49 pm

    Dear #16.

From what I have heard, the comments here are very, very tame….and kinder than his ilk would ever be to someone in distress.

Good guys get good comments, for the most part.

    Jack-A___ss……get what they get.

  19. Comment by Lewis Kapner — September 21, 2009 @ 5:02 pm

You say that you will not print hateful or inappropriate comments; yet, many of the comments are just that, particularly in light of the fact that this man had a serious stroke and is in intensive care. Those comments were either not screened or if they were screened, they were inadequately screened.
And, they do not fairly represent the kind of person Jay is. Jay is a fine perosn. He is an aggressive lawyer and certanly may rub some people the worng way, but the negative and snide remarks are off base.

  20. Comment by Fair — September 21, 2009 @ 5:37 pm

    Dear 19,,,

What us your definition of fair?

Something that is screened to confomrm your idea of what is fair in this situation?

Sorry, Lewis, this is not the controlled propaganda you find amongst the court system allegedly rigged by members of the Florida Bar.

This is not a forum for fake sympathies or fake praise for those that deserve contempt or who have not earned true, heartfelt praise in their carreer.

I was told this certain person was allegedly not the type to typically give anyone a fair break…….maybe exploit someone elses pain and suffering but allegedly not a sympathetic type by reputation.

A friend of mine spoke to someone who knows a person that allegedly works in his office.

Right or wrong, they laughed. Said that he might need a guard posted at his door so no one pulls the wrong plug….

They also said he had a thick skin and should be able to handle any comment.

Sounded pretty mean to me…I agree with that 100%….but I don’t know of anyone who gets that kind of visceral reaction, especially after a typically sympathy - attracting episode like this, unless that person has done some very bad, heartless things to other people…I cannot say he has ever done anything wrong at all…but the reactions here are quite revealing.

Personally, I don’t wish anyone harm, even this person.

Maybe this guy is an angel and a sweet man. I hope that he is. I hope he recovers 100%……..and goes back to being the sweet, lovable guy he may have been before.

I hope he gets zillions of loving comments that you night find acceptable.

But it is what it is. People react how they react.

I cannot change that. Apologists either.

  21. Comment by Nancy Morrissey — September 21, 2009 @ 6:49 pm

My goodness, what venom! The world of divorce court is not a pretty one, and I would imagine that a lot of people have been on the wrong end of a settlement with Mr. Jacknin, but have some class! If you have those thoughts, keep them to yourself. I agree that sitting anonymously behind a computer screen makes a lot of people “brave,” but if it’s something you’d be embarrassed to say in public, then perhaps you shouldn’t say it at all. Character still does count, and worry about your own and don’t denigrate someone else’s so snidely.

Publicly. Most people detest lawyers now.

    And will shout it publicly.

Are they all bad? No way.

But there are so many bad ones now and so many people have been absolutely abused by them in the legal/court process.

Our country is run by lawyers now…elected politicians are almost all lawyers, dem or rep.

And we are in a fine mess.

Was this guy a bad guy? No idea.

But its become a profession of false pride, billable hours and screw the client, even your own client…..on many levels.

These types of responses are not untypical, privately or publicly anymore.

Having had Jay in my life since I was eleven I can’t help but to respond to these posts… Unfortunately, we do not live in a world where we all get along and everyone likes us. Jay is human. Having lived with him and having him still a part of my life I think his family and friends know him better than some bloggers.

He is a successful attorney, was a great husband to my mother, loyal friend, and an amazing father to my two little brothers. The man had surgery and unfortunately struggled with the recovery. So unless you’re in that position or a loved one is SHUT YOUR MOUTH.

The world needs a certain number of cockroaches, for unknown reason, and they are impossible to erradicate.

Attys, such as this have become like a cockroach infestation in Palm Beach County and across the land.

Pests. No real reason to exist other than to prop up an exhaustive miserable system.

We need a small number of good , trained attorneys but not hundreds of thousands creeping about for prey 24/7

They have to be self-inflated and pompous…..

If someone does evil, pointless things day in day out, its the only way to make yourself feel like you are not worthless or evil….even though its temporary.

But they are tiresome…..these comments are not surprising…

Don’t listen to these 24/7 Legal Panderers on TV/Radio/Yellow Pages. Vile rodents and parasites.

    Settle it yourself.

Never retain an attorney to resolve civil conflict is the best advice of real Wisemen.

He hangs on tight to his money, and he is a little free with his temper. He has a streak of physical vanity that is misplace and at times distracting. But for all his failings he is a sincere family man and a lawyer who works his butt off for his clients. I wish him and his family well.

From what I can tell the “esteemed family lawyer”….never gave a damn about “family”….the term FAMILY LAW is beyond cynical.

Family Lawyers primarily make money, every bit of it, tearing families and relationships apart limb by limb.

Peaceful, civil reconciliations…harmonious families do not provide much income for the likes of “Family/Divore Lawyers”…..heartless pseudonymn invented by the legal machine to decieve.

…many have experienced the crude, heartless handiwork of the “family law” attorney. (beware)

If anyone tells you they practice “family law” be certain their mission is to destroy a family for profit.

An acquantance, just told me that he opted for a private divorce settlement, after any attorney that has been mentioned told him that, if retained, his job would be to take her for “EVERY SINGLE PENNY” she has…basically to ruin her.

    Family? Puleese……..

Oh, yes, it seems 38 is a thin - skinned friend of the FL BAR……

He/She calls all posters that do not agree with him/her (using ALL CAPS or online shouting) unworldly, common, losers and assh_les…and then says that everyone else should “Use Tact”…

Why is she at his bedsid now?

Does he need to be careful?

…are these following allegations accurate or baseless?…….”……At the center of the dispute is Mr. Tobias’s will, which designates his brothers as beneficiaries but does not name Mrs. Tobias. She contends that she is entitled to the estate because the will was signed before the couple married. In court filings, the Tobias brothers invoke Florida’s “slayer statute,” which prohibits inheritance by a person who murders someone from whom they stand to inherit. They claim she “intentionally killed” her husband “by asphyxiation and drowning.”

WHAT? Are these scary allegations sound/true!?

    Most of the comments are extremely too hard; must be because Jay Jacknin wasn’t on thier side of the litigation table; because I would have wanted him on my side; No one leaves their real names;

I do like the comment that Bert Reynolds made; “If a person has to walk across a room to call you an as_____; then you know you are successful; his addiction I believe was because of a long time back injury; there’s a difference. And to Jay Jacknin’s stepdaugher do not even lower yourself with these comments; I believe you must be smarter than that; just support your family & don’t worry about what anyone else says. And yes, Christiansen & Jacknin run’s a tight ship; it was difficult & very stressful. I know I worked there awhile ago.God Bless you & your family.

    That’s for sure.

I am Sure # 53 was fired from the firm ….
and as for # 54 , If you needed an attorney to fight for your life /or what is legally and rightfully yours , you would want a fighter and a great lawyer to do that for you in a complicated legal system .

I AM SURE YOU ARE LIVING A PRETTY SIMPLE LIFE WITH A LACK OF THE DRWN OUT LEGAL SYSTEM , AS IT TAKES 2 PARTIES TO TANGO AND 2 TO SETTLE ANY CASE .

    GET A LIFE LOSER

Why not learn to let off the ALL CAPS tab sweetie?

There are no doubt decent attys out there.

Based upon the allegations and comments herein, this one or the firm associated….Christionson and Jachin…or whatever, clearly do not appear to be among them.

The one in question appears to be a character straight out of BLEAK HOUSE…….or A Christmas Carol.

Its interesting when such an apparently self-important, arrogant, entirely judgmental individual such as this, meets with a situation such as this, the will of the higher-power…..how people TRULY react…..not too much heartwarming praise here……in fact its almost exactly the opposite…….unpraise…over and over.

I am certain he and his firm feel they are very much superior to all of us…..and nothing here will change their cynical view….or dedication to doing whatever it is they do to others without remorse.

    In fact, they are nothing.

Its clear that virtually no one agrees with their self assesments…other than other bloodsuckers in their chose “profession” of family destruction….and emotional torturers who also benefit by fishing in poisoined waters……..let them taste the fruits of their own labors.

And the Toobias incident….you are right…that is indeed another matter altogether……..a Karmic Black Hole that is not yet done.

It’d interesting how everyone slams attorneys… that is until you need one. I don’t think divorce attorneys cause divorce, but if you need something to point your hateful comments at and perhaps to feel better about yourself… have at it.

As for karma… can’t help to think of all the bad karma points you are all making by your hateful comments.

But then again, we are all hypocrites anyway.

    “shame on us
    doomed from the start
    may god have mercy
    on our dirty little hearts
    shame on us
    for all we’ve done
    and all we ever were
    just zeros and ones”

#60, stop with the plagiarism already! Jay won’t appreciate you taking a poem he penned describing himself and copying it to this blog!

  64. Comment by TheWayItReallyIs — September 23, 2009 @ 9:37 am

#55, you have no idea what you’re talking about. Anyone with half a brain walks out of that pathetic office after a couple of days and those who choose to stay are either masochists and/or dumb as rocks.

  65. Comment by Only the bad ones — September 23, 2009 @ 9:50 am

    60…

Well, by reading these posts, its a very interesting study to find that this individual and his firm are alleged by some to epitomize what it takes to be a “Succesful” attorney today.

I would had to see a bad attorney.

  66. Comment by Dissapointed Citizen — September 23, 2009 @ 10:00 am

Just like any profession, there are people who are good and people who are not. I am not arguing anyone’s points. Just making observations of circular nature of negative karma.

This is what happens when you get in a fight with a pig. Everybody gets muddy, but the pig loves mud.

  67. Comment by TheWayItReallyIs — September 23, 2009 @ 10:28 am

64, the first sentence of your first paragraph is right on. A Robert Montgomery, Esq. (the late) type Jacknin and his ilk are not, nor will they ever be. As for the last five words in your last paragraph, you’re right on again … they accurately describe Jay Jack/Jerk-Off. Thanks for sharing!

  68. Comment by Less Piggies — September 23, 2009 @ 10:34 am

    64 well said.

Keep the very few good ones and cherish them.

The bad one’s….the “pigs”….we need to void them.

Especially the ones that love to glom together in fancy suits and expensive buildings and call themselves “firm” in hallowed terms…..

They then select certain among them, put a black robe on them…and call him/her “Judge”.

The Catholic Church was very successful at this for a long time also….burning heretics and molesting little boys, while stuttering to preserve respect ina corrupt institution with corrupt players in costumes….but they have failed.

It is intereting that this particularly vulgar specimen is considered one of the “successful” ones by some…..odd.

  69. Comment by TheWayItReallyIs — September 23, 2009 @ 10:53 am

66, Excellent post but re: your last paragraph, it’s not interesting or odd in the least that there are some who consider the “vulgar specimen” successful. They are, quite simply, cut from the same cloth.

  70. Comment by TheWayItReallyIs — September 23, 2009 @ 10:57 am

Wrong #30, When someone walks across a room to tell one he/she’s an ahole, it’s because they ARE an ahole, and success, however perceived, has nothing to do with it.

    unliked by some…
    loved by others….
Sounds like Jay will be real busy again when he gets back

  72. Comment by PBCesq. — September 23, 2009 @ 6:03 pm

You didn’t get it straight 69. There’s nothing professional about JJ.

You PEOPLE,are SICK,This is about a mans life,SAME on ALL of YALL.Do any of yall stop& think of his two BOYS? I know JAY, I think he is a good guy.His kids love him very much .And his job,as Attorney,is what he does, just like any other Attorney, thats what he is PAID for,I guess you are PISSED,because,he wasnt on your side.I hope he comes out of this 100%.

  74. Comment by crooked — September 24, 2009 @ 9:36 am

    Straight like a broken arrow.

Re-visit the Tooobias case or the OJ case if you want to see that kind of attorneys that get involved in that kind of situation……(especially with an x-wife who is allegedly now at your bedside.) Very odd, some would say suspicious…..but who knows for sure except the parties directly involved?

The likes of Ms. Toooobias seem to be very fond of this kind of person.

Everyone else, (except others in the same bad-lawyer cabal) seem thoroughly repulsed.

But being an alleged liar, crook, thief appear to go hand in hand with some peoples definition of success as a member of the FLorida Bar……

…so who knows…..he may be totally swamped……but who cares……its not productive work…(see comment appearing online below)

“….Brad Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia.

“It’s basically a social and environmental toxin,” Wilcox said of divorce.”

  75. Comment by PBCesq. — September 24, 2009 @ 9:57 am

JJ’s a human being, albeit a sorry excuse of one.

I’m sure most folks here are sorry to hear he, like any other human being, had a stroke and that he, like any other human being, will pull out of it.

The fact still remains he’s a first class creep based on his treatment of people, so the unfortunate event of his stroke doesn’t change that fact.

Like Madoff having a heart attack and suddenly all are supposed to proclaim him as being a great guy; otherwise, they’re sick and twisted people. Sorry 71, I’m not buying your whine.

  76. Comment by Agreed — September 24, 2009 @ 11:18 am

    Well said.

A creep is a creep is a creep..

..the Madoff analogy is dead on. Mr. Jaafffee. Peecower et,al will probably always defend or somehow justify the guy…..does not change reality.

Perhaps this experience will have some positive outcome.

    Unlikely….but one can hope.

Anyone who lost a case to Jay Jacknin can now have their 15 minutes of fame to post horrific comments against him which he cannot argue; if he could, you would be as sorry as you were when you were defeated in court! Anyone else posting these horrible, negative notes should get a life. Jay is a wonderful person, a tremendous father and benevolent human being.
“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” I personally will pray for his speedy recovery and your pathetic souls.

I am without words to comment on this columinsts article. I do not know how he and others can possibly feel good about writing such horrible, hateful comments about anyone whether or not the person is a bad person when they are unable to defend the written attack!! The colomunist and others should be ashasmed of themselves. The editor Should too for allowing such nonsense to be published!!! I would like to know who he is to judge others!! Remember the saying when you point a finger there are 3 pointing to you!!!! I can think of a few choice words for you but I’ll let you figure it out!! And hey let go of the anger it’s not healthy!!!

No one is perfect; we all have faults. Please remember that this man has two wonderful, sensitive young sons who have been through a lot the last few years. Your rude and hurtful comments don’t hurt Jay, but your comments do & will hurt his children who don’t deserve your hateful thoughts & words. Please have some humanity and remove your awful posts.
