Palm Beach County Commissioner Steve Abrams

Rookie Palm Beach County Commissioner Steve Abrams was called to the Fort Lauderdale headquarters of his private employer, the law firm of Rothstein, Rosenfeldt and Adler, for a 9 a.m. meeting today. The meeting is about the future of the 76-attorney company founded by the flamboyantly rich and politically connected Scott Rothstein.

Abrams is one of three attorneys at the firm’s Boca Raton offices. Hired 18 months ago, Abrams specialized in governmental law until he was picked by Gov. Charlie Crist to replace disgraced commissioner Mary McCarty on the commission.

“I’m just part-time now and I don’t do governmental law,” Abrams said. “I don’t know anything about what’s going on. I’m in a satellite office in Boca. We don’t hear anything.”

Abrams said he doesn’t know if he still has a job there. Several lawyers were recently laid off.

Rothstein, a tight buddy of Crist’s and other Republican heavy-hitters like U.S. Sen. John McCain, skipped town last week amid allegations that money borrowed from legal settlements was missing.

Rothstein was known to hire lawyers involved in politics, including Abrams, a former mayor of Boca Raton, and disgraced former Broward County Sheriff Ken Jenne.

Commissioner Abrams is a good voice of reason on the County Commission. His lawfirm would do well by keeping him employed. However, he may not benefit from keeping them around…

Steve Abrams is beyond repoach. That lawfirm is more than Scott Rothstein, and once they cut him out, they will be able to regain trust. One crazy man can do alot of damage. It’s gonna get worse, but then it’ll get better.

Wow. Another attorney at the center of alleged public corruption and/or public/private theft of funds?

If a few more of the really great attorneys here would abandon the attack - dog nature of attorneys here to attack any healthy business with debilitating lawsuits, maybe we could create some good jobs and create enough LEGITIMATE legal work to go around.

But too many attorneys apply their considerable skills and education to scheming of ways to attack and destroy any viable company in this state.

Start by eliminating Joint and Several Liability (absurd)….and reducing any contingency fee to no more than 10%….then follow - up with a loser-pays system, as is used in England……and you will see the huge amount of destructive litigation dry up.

Businesses might then prosper and grow.

Right now……Florida and the US are becoming SO anti-business or so dangerous because as soon as you become succesful some attorney is looking to screw the company.

We just need more good attys. (sounds easy….good luck.)

Scott Rothstein is not missing at all…. i just spoke to him and he told me that he is hanging out with Roger Gamblin (Flagler Title) .

Hye Mike, was Jennifer Ross hanging with them too?

  6. Comment by mike — November 2, 2009 @ 11:36 am

Does anyone notice a pattern here?

The meeting is about the future of the 76-attorney company founded by the flamboyantly rich and politically-connected Scott Rothstein.

“………Abrams is one of three attorneys at the firm’s Boca Raton offices. Hired 18 months ago, Abrams specialized in governmental law until he was picked by Gov. Charlie Crist to replace disgraced commissioner Mary McCarty on the commission….”

“…..And allegedly the firm hired about 4 former judges, a couple of former prosecutors and Former BSO Sheriff Jenne when he was released from his sentence…..”

Gee there’s a shock … another member of the Legal Mafia was corrupt!!! Abrams, Rothstein, what’s the difference?? The sad thing is - IF they ever catch him, his legal buddies will get him off or, at worst, get him country club treatment.

Imagine, they can all sleep at night!!

  9. Comment by Fl Statute : Rule 98 — November 2, 2009 @ 12:05 pm

Nothing will happen to this guy…even when caught….is former partner resigns the firm to “Represent” Rothstien? Is he being pad with stolen money?

We need a 90% reduction in the number of Attys in S. Florida….there are TOO TOO TOO many…they have to resort to crime to live lavishly.

I know 2 or 3 attorneys who are honest and great people.

I heard someone say this the other day…….its probably an exaggeration….but who knows…”It’s a shame that 98% of lawyers give the rest of them a bad name!”

oh whats the big deal people, so he stole their money, that what lawyers do,

All these CORRUPT law firms are imploding! WEISS & HANDLER of Boca Raton will be NEXT! The KASMAN divorce showed Weiss & Handler - Carol Kartagener & Henry Handler to commit PERJURY and MISREPRESENT to the Court.
Brilliant atty JOEL WEISSMAN for the husband PROVE tima and time again that Kartagener and Handler are LIARS!
Mrs. Kasman has finally realized ALL this and is planning MALPRACTICE and BART COMPLAINTS against Carol A. Kartagener and Henry B. Handler.
    WEISS & HANDLER ARE DONE!!

To Bad Attorneys/Good Attorneys, your take on the law is very interesting.

If you happen to be in business, tell us all how would you invite government to determine the pricing for your product, prevent you from delivering a quality product to your customer, and setting a maximum return for your efforts.

I wonder if you really mean what you say, or is this Attorney issue one of the very few where you are an impotent consumer, as most of us are, who, finds yourself advocating wholesale changes by our Government to protect you from others, doing business that you deem too costly and risky for society?

Somehow, I bet you hate government interference, regulations, takeovers, and the like, in nearly every other aspect of life.

Except when you determine it is in your best interest to ignore your own advice.

It’s quite human and is the basis of government and the politics that surround governing.

That’s why we have elections, and that’s why too much money flows around Politics, it’s the most important game in the world, and it is being being argued, altered, and seldom remains static.

I see no alternative, and I’m not a lawyer.

Mr. Abrams is a good & fair attorney. I think he’s the start to restoring order to South Palm Beach County politics. His no nonsense approach is what is needed.

He’s a attorney. Judges, attorneys, accountants, political people. All come in contact a lot in their professions. This wasn’t Mr. Abrams first job. He’s well respected for what he stands for among South County’s Judges, Attorneys, & Accountants.

A new door will open for Steve, no matter what. I think it works better for him like this.

  16. Comment by Red Bull — November 2, 2009 @ 3:31 pm

Check under his desk - That’s where HENRY HANDLER hides - the COWARD that he is - Putting on his ELEVATOR SHOES!

BTW - Where is KEN PRUITT??? With BARRY RODERMAN under Carol’s desk….. LMAO……

What a group of FRAUDS AND CHEATS!

  17. Comment by PJay — November 2, 2009 @ 4:55 pm

Anyone who would hire that scumbag Ken Jenne is a scumbag himself, and I hope there’s some reason they can find to throw him into prison for a long time. They’re all rotten–every single one of them. (Lawyers and politicians, I mean.)

  18. Comment by Fl Bar — November 2, 2009 @ 4:55 pm

The commissioner is clearly allegedly tainted. The idea that you can lie down with Flea Infested Dogs and not come up with Fleas yourself is ludicrous.

I heard a rumour that the Rothsteeen guy personally pushed for this guy’s hiring there. No idea if its true or not.

But R-Stein did seem to think he could buy political favor, perhaps to protect himself…perhaps just to give work to other crooks.

He allegedly was hiring round the clock BSO Deputies to park outside his house, 4 former Judges, former Homicide prosecutors and the former BSO Sheriff , Jenne, that went to jail for corrupt activities……

Where was the FL BAR during all of this?

Its about time to make ALL BAR COMPLAINTS public from day one. Now they are not?

Complaints against all other businesses are routinely made public , why not bar complaints?

Its becoming clear that Licensed Attorneys or Attorneys are the BIGGEST CROOKS of all.

Madoff, Picower and now Rothsteen……all attorneys and all from the same tribe?

Booze was an attorney too I think.

If Bar Complaints were made public at the time of filing…all of them…..the public might be better able to make an informed decision before hiring an attorney.

Now, a guy can have 100 complaints under investigation and a prospective client might never be told this by the FL BAR.

Good attys would welcome this. It only protects bad attys.

And they will all start whining right about now.

  19. Comment by Jean-Claude — November 2, 2009 @ 4:56 pm

If commissioner Abrams is such a good guy why is he working for such a corrupt firm? He, and every other attorney, politician, businessman, or any person who reads a newspaper, knows the reputation of the firm. And I sure he knew it before he got there, but he choose to work there anyway. It was probably an economic decision not a moral one. He probably did it for the money so that begs the question, what else does he do for the money?

Steve Abrams is a very honorable man. But ….the bigger they are the harder they fall !!! I am not the least bit surprised learning about Rothstein..It was only a matter of time that it caught up with him..

Rothstein is the worst of a class of lawyers who abuse the legal system to hurt people by running up the legal fees on trumped up litigation. His firm also employed Roger Stone, the Republican hactchetman , who The New Yorker termed : The Dirty Trickster ….. pure trash & burn artists ……. this guy and his firm are the worst of the worst….. If money is missing I’d be looking off-shore to Belize and maybe Costa Rica where his firm had clients. If invested in real estate, as a sahreholder in a private company, it wouldn’t show up in a bank account.

  33. Comment by The Jewish Avenger? — November 3, 2009 @ 7:36 am

How could Abrams interview with Rothstein, speak to other attorneys at the firm, become a partner and then “know nothing”…when the crap hits the fan?

Its a lot like Nazi Officers saying “we did not know”?…after they got caught harming civilians.

Google “Scott Rothstein Jewish Avenger” to find the browardpalmbeach….dot …com -New Times article from about a month ago. Its allegations are the description of an insane situation.

Rotstteeen allegedly calls himself the Jewish Avenger and claims to have 43 voices in his head.

His partners’ complaint against him….still describes him as a “talented lawyer”,,,when will these people ever get over themselves.

What is the FL BAR doing about this?

Abrams worked with this guy as a Partner? We replaced Mary Mcarty ….jailed on corruption charges….with an attorney working for yet another Politically connected Ponzi Operation?

Of course all the other attorneys in the firm claim they know nothing! Huh? No one believes that.

Picower, Madoff…ROthsteeen…..how many more “Jewish Avengers” Attorneys from The Bronx/NY can we take? What is wrong with these people? Psychopaths?

Some guy with allegedly 43 voices in his head calling himself The Jewish Avenger is running your law firm ..he’s your partner day in day out…..and you don’t notice anything wrong? How stupid are these attorneys?….I doubt they are stoopid. Corrupt? Co-Conspirators? hmm…

Excerpt below from New Times/Broward article by journalist Mr. Norman, I think……the entire article reads like a nightmare in motion…….brilliant journalism….and on target.

“…..Mega-wealthy lawyer, businessman, and political backer Scott Rothstein called me last week and told me he was the “Jewish Avenger” and was out to destroy me.

Rothstein wasn’t joking; he was seething. He told me he was going
to sue me and my wife and bankrupt my household. Rothstein, the managing partner of the law firm Rothstein Rosenfeldt & Adler, said he would throw all his legal might at me until I could never “participate in the journalism community again.” He even said he was going to throw a news conference about me for the TV stations.

“Most people figure if you’re left alone, you’ll go away,” Rothstein told me. “They figure they should let a sleeping dog lie. I like to jab the dog in the eye. And if it bites me, I’ll jab its eye out.” “
