On the red carpet at Chris Evert’s gala . . .

Some of the talk on the red carpet at the Boca Raton Resort on Saturday showed that stars, too, don’t mind a second job in this economy.
Among the celebs who answered the call from Chris Evert to help raise cash for childrens’ charities by playing tennis and partying in Boca, Burn Notice’s Jeffrey Donovan said he started a new business recently.
And so did area Olympic swimmer Dara Torres, who walked into fellow famous jock Evert’s ball using a crutch. She recently had knee surgery.
Said L.A. hunk Donovan, whose USA Network spy series is filmed mostly in the Miami area: “I’ve become a lover of Florida. I even went up to Tallahassee last week to ask the legislature for more incentives for film companies to shoot here. And even though I’ve been renting an apartment for the last few years, I’m looking to buy somewhere near Miami. I even started a new business.
“When producers come here to film, they always want to hire local actors. Fact is, local actors sometimes aren’t as good as Hollywood actors. So, I started acting classes.”
Torres, meanwhile, told reporters it’ll take her up to 18 months to recover from arthritis surgery. How does she spend the time? Speaking engagements, of the motivational kind. And according to her booking agency’s Web site, she commands between $35,000 and $45,000. Private planes are her preferred mode of transportation, according to the site.

Rocker Gavin Rossdale, meanwhile, is still reeling from a recent burglary at his and wife Gwen Stefani’s London home. But Rossdale, who attends the gala every year, found a silver lining.
“The bad guys passed by a nice painting several times without stealing it,” Rossdale told Page2Live. “That was great.”
How fine is the work of art?
“Oh, it’s very nice. But I don’t want to say too much, just in case they come back,” Rossdale said.
Comic Jon Lovitz was with a date who was way too hot for him, while tennis great Martina Navratilova complained that Evert was late for her own gala.
“Everyone always waits for Chrissie,” she said, somewhat sarcastically.
Once finally there, Evert talked about her first charity tournament 20 years ago.
“We had it at the Polo Club in Boca,” she said. “We had about 1,000 people to see the tennis and about 250 at the gala.”
Since then, the two-day event has turned into one of the season’s biggest social events, with more than $700,000 raised Saturday and Sunday.
Also seen on the red carpet: Soap opera star Maeve Quinlan (The Bold and the Beautiful); KOOL-105.5 FM morning radio personalities Mo and Sally; tennis legends Pam Shriver and Lindsay Davenport; male tennis stars Justin Gimelstob and Vince Spadea; and actress Elisabeth Shue, among others.

Yes, Jeffrey was lobbying in Tallahassee, playing tennis for charity, and is now en route to Iraq for a USO tour for the troops. Good works from him in his off season. And great work by everyone who showed up to play in Delray this weekend.
Not a bad pic of Chrissie….she cleans up nice.
Dara Torres is ripped!
:45 on….corruption in the courts?

We didn’t attend the Gala but took 3 9 year old to watch the tennis and enjoy the day at the Delray Tennis center.
It was great! The kids had a wonderful time and enjoyed the antics on the court. It was nice mixing humor with some tennis. That’s a sure way to get 9 year old boys to sit still and catch the tennis fever.
Top it all off with autographs from Martina and Gavin and we all had a great day. We will support Chris’s charity!
Thanks to all who made it possible…and the staff of the DTC were really great too.
I believe Mr. Donovan is on the right track with the Hollywood migrating East thing. My family has become Burn Notice addicts, though we all know a better name/plame/game might be Burn Victim. Who wouldn’t love to see a picture of Donovan dancing with Valerie Plame in Miami?
I think he is proving through this role to be a versatile actor with strong potential for film as a leading man. His co-stars round out a great ensemble.
We all love the show and wish them great success.
