The commander of the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit was nabbed by deputies early this morning on suspicion of drunken driving.

Lt. Terry Marvin, 50, a 28-year veteran of law enforcement, flew his unmarked service car into a small canal in front of his Acreage home.

There was no other car involved, but Marvin was taken to Palms West Hospital for treatment. That’s where deputies placed him under arrest. He was processed at the Gun Club lockup in West Palm Beach and released about 6 a.m..

EMTs had to extract Marvin from the car through a window, according to the arrest affidavit. They found “numerous bottles of medication” in a duffle bag and had to restrain Marvin, who was described as “agitated.” A deputy said he smelled alcohol on his breath.

PBSO spokeswoman Teri Barbera said Internal Affairs has launched an investigation.

“He has been placed on leave with pay,” Barbera said. Marvin makes $109,200 a year. Barbera declined to comment further.

An agency source, who asked to remain anonymous, said Marvin checked himself into alcohol treatment this morning. He has been treated for alcoholism in the past while as a PBSO employee.

Marvin was arrested on suspicion of DUI by state troopers in 1998 in Broward. He was demoted from sergeant to deputy in 2002 for driving to a gun training session with a blood-alcohol level of 0.18 percent. According to employment records, Marvin was reinstated to sergeant a year later then was promoted to lieutenant in September 2006.

As chief of the aviation division, Marvin does not fly, Barbera said. His duties are mostly administrative. He worked undercover in organized crime and drug enforcement before being assigned to several specialty units, including park patrol, K-9 and the marine division.

Marvin is the husband of Annette Marvin, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw’s personal assistant and confidante.

How can a guy that was once busted from sergeant to deputy be running anything in PBSO?!?!?!

He needs to be fired ASAP.

I hope he will pay for the damages to the tax payers police car.

Was he on duty? If so he should be fired. If not on duty why is he driving his police car.

I am so sick of Police using tax payers assets for personal use.

Do you know how bad a cop has to mess up to get charged with DUI?

I’m sure Terry Marvin has been pulled over for DUI many, many, many times and sent on his way once he was identified as fellow police officer.

  6. Comment by Sinamen — November 24, 2009 @ 1:56 pm

Busted from sergeant to deputy, now he’s a lieutenant? Now placed on paid leave, with a yearly salary $109,200? Whats to investigate? The guy’s obviously a drunk and they’ve been covering this up for years. I think its time he’s put out to pasture, then he can stay home and drink all he wants, and collect his pension.PBSO is such a joke. How any of them expect to be respected or looked upon with reverence is mind boggling.

Check you facts on this story. Some of it is untrue. Double check where he really went after having been at the jail, under what conditions he was discharged from jail.

  8. Comment by Mr. B — November 24, 2009 @ 2:48 pm

The issue here is the Lieutenant has a drinking problem and that’s not a crime or does it make him a poor commander. Yes, the DUI is a crime and he should be punished for it after he completes treatment. As a former cop, I wonder if his days working undercover in organized crime and drugs had anything to do with his drinking problem. I’m sure if he was some movie star, everyone would yell to let him go. You should also be commending the officers who had sense enough to place him under arrest instead of covering up. All in all, I think PBSO did a good job and I wish good luck to the Lieutentant in treatment.

Seems Ric Bradshaw has too many friends.

This is what minorities complain about. It’s okay for a white police officer to be helped, to get placed in jobs that are “easy” to help him maintain his salary.

But when this happens to a minority…it’s a different story. THAT’S the INEQUITY!

This guy has been “saved” by his friendships, given a job that keeps him safe from being discovered (meanwhile those in the unit suffer under his leadership).

Bad news…too many friendships in the PBSO.

Clean them out, retire them and in the next election find some new blood.

Surely, there are leaders ready to step up and clean up.

Give those people an opportunity. Bradshaw is giving the county a bad name. Don’t re-elect him.

The union needs to start looking for an alternative..NOW!

Mr. B you should know better than anyone that police should be held to a higher standard. Unfortunately law enforcement isn’t what it used to be. People have lost respect for the police because the police have lost respect for the people.

Apart from all of your b.s. clearly trying to excuse the guy and rationalize why he should not be FIRED (he should), you really put it over the top with this nonsense I quoted above.

The cops who responded should be COMMENDED for arresting him?!
    WHY?!
The were doing what they are OBLIGATED, ethically, legally, and morally, to do! I see no need to “commend” them for doing their goddamned JOBS, Mr. B. They get commended for going above and beyond, showing uncommon valor, etc. But NOT for doing the BASIC stuff they are SUPPOSED to do!

The LT will get a tap on the hand, and go back to work, that is what they do to all the overpaid jerks that are so called police or sheriffs in PBC. He should not be paid while on leave, why should the taxpayers pay him for wrong doing? this is so unfair to the taxpayers that pay his salary, no one pays the taxpayers for drinking, driving, and causing accidents to themselves and having to call someone to get him out of his own mess. He should be made to pay back what the taxpayer had to pay to rescue him. FIRE HIM, this is not his first or second mistake.

Well, Well, well…Perhaps he’s been flying over my house with infered radar out in the acreage, passing judgement on all those pot growing dope heads down there. I can imagine him up there in the helicopter with a flask of bourbon drunk out of his mind and a cronic alcoholic, saying those damn drugies growing all that wacky tobaccy. This is typical of these kinds of people, booze is way more addictive and makes you do stuff like drive your car into a canal in front of your house, pot wouldn’t make him do that, and if it did it would be some good stuff, and he would not have become agitated either if he was high.

Yet ANOTHER example of the Bradshaw administration , it NEVER ends there. One damaging story after another , There has been more scandals , corruption and things swept under the rug under this Sheriff’s watch than any other Sheriff’s in the past history. Bradshaw , Gauger , and the rest of the mis-fits draining the county budget need to be cleaned out . You can almost count on another story next week , Bradshaw has let that agency become the biggest embarrassment in south Florida . He will need some real smoke and mirriors to win a re-election , because ALL of these things will not be forgotten by the taxpaying voters .Time for you to realize , you are not a leader Ric , you have failed , you won’t fool us a third time .

Did you ever break the speed limit ??? you could have killed somebody !! Did you ever pick up a drink and drink it ???? more than likely !! Did you ever put blame on the wrong people and feel like a real man doing it ??? yes !!! Like I said earlier, you just don’t run around firing people for fun and for the satisfaction of your Ignorance in Justification, you MORON ! If you can do a better job than Mr. Bradshaw and Mr.Gauger, simply step up to the plate and fall on your NOSE !!! Have you ever been fired from a Job ???? Any cop defending this guy should really give themselves a reality check. Someone is killed by a drunk driver every 30 minutes in this country.

In 2007, there were 4,013 soldiers killed in Iraq. In 2007, there were about 17,600 deaths resulting from DUIs.

This is not the first time Marvin has had issues. Trying to show up to a gun range with a .18 BAC??! C’mon.

The guy has had his chances. He is a danger to the people he is sworn to protect and needs to go.

I’m not shocked a cop drinks. I am shocked a cop earns 109,000 for some administrative duties. You can’t pay public employees 100k year and raise taxes on people who make 40k a year. Government is out of control.

Did you ever stop and think that the reason there is so much in the news recently….is because the Sherrif doesn’t sweep it under the rug? He has held more people accountable for abuse of the system and neglect of duty then anyone before him. Give him a little credit instead of making assumptions based on BS rumors.

Why is this important information on “Hot Celebrity News Page? ”
and not the front page as it would have been had it been a member of the public.
This only confirms that the Palm Beach Post is and has not been serving the public for a very long time .
What with all the recent problems with the Sheriffs Dept, perhaps the “Post”should do some investigative reporting for a change.

I know for a fact that this guy has had many chances to get sober, and blew them all. He should have been fired long ago, only because that might have been the one one consequence of his drinking that might have woken him up. The good news is that he didn’t die, and he still has another chance to get sober. Wake up and smell the coffee Mr. Marvin, you’re running out of time

To all you cry babies whining about his 109k salary, let me ask you this. How much would you expect to earn after being with a corporation after 28 years? Would you be happy making $50-60k per year for 28 years of service? If you are okay with that, you have very low expectations. It takes a lot of work, and a lot of time paying dues to reach that salary. It takes much longer to make that working for the government than it does working for a private corporation, yet, many cops have the same education level as many in the private sector.

Give the people who dedicate their lives to public and civil service a break. Raise your expectations out of life, 109k after 28 years is really not a lot!

  39. Comment by Get Real — November 27, 2009 @ 12:56 am

  40. Comment by Bobby Bannon — November 27, 2009 @ 1:54 am

There’s absolutely no excuse for him to be drinking and driving. No excuse for anyone to do it. ZERO !!! He has broken the law and this is not the first time. There are alot of NICE people out there in this world and in PBC that break the law everyday and get DUI’S and they all pay the price for it. Mr. Marvin should pay the price for his actions, he knows better than most (given his position and years of work with PBSO) that what he was doing was wrong. I don’t care what the problem is that he is having in his life or what stresses he has upon him due to his JOB. At least he has a job and a good one at that. There are people without a job and many of them. Should they all be drinking and driving because they have a problem? NO, it’s against the law - THE LAW IS THE LAW and MR. MARVIN BROKE THE LAW “”"AGAIN”"” and he should be punished according to THE LAW and held accountable for his actions. PERIOD !! I have 3 siblings and many In-Laws that are NYC POLICE OFFICERS. They are TERMINATED IMMEDIATELY UPON A DUI STOP !!! IMMEDIATELY, not SUSPENDED with a 100K paycheck !!! Shame on Mr. Marvin, he owes PBC a great big appology. He would not have been running to a rehab had he not been arrested this week for DUI would he? Let’s see if he’ll answer one question honestly::: Mr Marvin, how many times have you driven that county issued car while you were under the influence prior to this weeks arrest? Give us an honest answer. I am going to start a new Not For-Profit Organization due to this. It’s going to be called PBC Citizens Affairs. It is going to be aimed at making sure that people are held accountable for their actions, people that are in civil service positions. We have enough to worry about these days with people drinking and driving and killing themselves and our kids. We will not tolerate a high ranking police officer with many years of experience drinking and driving without paying the price as any other civiian would. Mr. Marvin made a choice to drink, he then made a choice to drive. He made these choices before on more than one occassion, lets be sure he doesn’t make another bad decision before the powers that be end up with blood on their hands if they allow him to slide thru the justice system AGAIN. his actions are very unbecomming of a police officer and a public servant. He is not a very good role model. Lets see if anyone else has the guts to put their name and phone number in this blog or will Mr. Marvins’ friends just hide behind telephone lines and call me at all hours of the night to harrass me now like punks. I welcome it. You will be caught… Written by: Bobby Bannon 561-641-9999 - Future President and Founder of PALM BEACH COUNTY CITIZENS AFFAIRS. 221 Maplewood Lane Greenacres Florida 33463

In my opinion there is something very wrong with an administration that has a 109K law enforcement officer driving a county high performance unmarked police car back and forth to his administrative desk job to do what? Sit there and ponder what to do with his upcoming sweetheart retirement package or forget it all and go have a drink or two. This PBSO agency needs to be cleaned up and Bradshaws cozy relationship with the cops union [PBA] is really starting to stink badly..

This is actually Terry Marvin’s 3rd DUI arrest, 2nd in a PBSO patrol car while ON duty!! He was busted back to a Deputy from Sergeant, only to be promoted again. It was Ric Bradshaw who promoted him to his current $109,200.00 Lieutenant position. Terry couldn’t pass a Lieutenant exam, so Ric just promoted him anyway…could the fact that Terry’s wife Annette is Ric Bradshaw’s personal assistant have anything to do with it??? AND he was placed into one of the most cushy, do-nothing jobs a PBSO Lieutenant could have: Aviation Unit!!! What a JOKE! Unfortunately, this $109K joke is on US taxpayers of Palm Beach County. Ric Bradshaw is out of control and MUST be replaced!!!
ATTENTION ALL TAXPAYING VOTERS: Wake up and smell your hard earned money being wasted DAILY by Ric Bradshaw and his hand picked group of has-been or NEVER been cops, like: Himself (Sheriff Ric Bradshaw), Lt. Paula Kronsperger, Col. Mike Gauger, Lt. Terry Marvin, former State Atty turned PBSO Legal Advisor Barry Krischer, Capt. Robert VanReeth, Sgt. (but former PBSO Capt.) Anne Marie Burke, etc. etc. (I’m tired of typing already!)
Just total the collective annual PBSO salaries for these WORTHLESS individuals, and you will find that Palm Beach County could actually hire about 30-40 REAL PATROL DEPUTYS!!!! You remember…the ones who actually WORK for a living and protect and serve our community. Think about it…..

To poster 47; You are obviously someone who is exextremely jealous over people who have achieved rank at the P.b.S.o. Or maby, you were who has been fired for shoplifting or a number of other offenses that would not be tolerated by this administration. Either way,you name a group of people who you deem worthless. Well here is the story one one of them. One of them I’ve for clost to 37 years. He started as a young policeman who volunteered for the worst and most difficult areas in the county. There wasnt a bad guy out there who didn’t fear him and on almost every shift, he hauled someone to jail for burglaries, robberiesor drugs. Yet when he arrested them,he still treated them very fairly and in return they did many favors by helping him make many more arrests
When he was promoted, he didn’t stop,he continued to volunteer for the tough assignments and soon was able to help some of the worst neighborhoods become decent areas to live in again.
I called the police many times for problems in my neighborhood only to be disapointed by some officer, but when I called thpis man,he always found time to help, just as he did for a lot of other people I know. He never said no and always found a way to help foe which I will always be thankful.

    Dear Concearned (#48):
1st- Learn to spell, including your own moniker: “Concerned”…there is no A in this word. This was only the first of your many spelling errors.
2nd- I AM one of those who have achieved rank at PBSO, only I EARNED my rank!! The people I have mentioned ALL have tarnished the hard earned and respected star that I wear. As I stated…some of these people are “HAS BEEN” police officers. Perhaps the one you so greatly admire falls into that category. Perhaps Mike Gauger is the HAS BEEN you speak of. Unfortunately, he is only a legend in his OWN mind! He is a USELESS WASTE of my (and your) tax dollars!!!
3rd- Do some research on what THIS administration will tolerate before you misspeak again. You can start by searching this site…Mr. Lambiet has done an OUTSTANDING job of keeping our community abreast of the political corruption and illegal activities of this sheriff’s subordinates that goes on directly under Ric Bradshaw’s command and control. To date, Ric HAS DONE NOTHING to repremand or fire ANY of these OVERPAID and corrupt morons who continue to waste our money…ALL of whom are receiving SIX FIGURE SALARIES!!!!
4th- WAKE UP!! The facts are what they are. There is nothing you can say, based merely on your personal and uneducated OPINION that will change the way that I or any other tax paying citizen of Palm Beach County thinks about Ric Bradshaw and his corrupt agency.

The Governor makes 130K a year. Many who head state agencies make less. This is a Lt. making 11Ok in a cozy job with great benefits and a car to fool around in. The county is slashing services and staff all over while PBSO spending is out of control. We keep being fed great examples of a budget that makes no sense.

    # 48 Who cares..we are talking about Terry Marvin not something that happened 38 yrs ago. I agree, the man ahould not be in this job. It is because of his wife the position was created.

    # 19 Pukey hatred punkass!?! Now that is intelligent. The problem isn’t with Terry, it is with Bradshaw who sweeps the problems under the carpet. And yea, I am a taxpayer, the person who pays your salary.

Terry, When you get out of rehab, do yourself a favor and retire so you can enjoy a retirement pension.
Unless of course the agency wants to put you back to work so you can have a DUI fatality while on duty and loose your pension. And,taxpayers will be left to deal with the neglegent retention civil payout. And, you will never live down the death you will cause. I’m no stranger to drinking on duty. I left before I killed someone and lost it all. Leave quietly and quickly. You’ll be glad you did. See ya at A.A. :)

SOUNDS LIKE BRADSHAW NEEDS TO STOP WASTING MONEY ON THE DUI COMMERCIALS AND PUT IT TOWARDS COUNSELING HIS OWN DEPUTIES. WHAT A JOKE - HE ACTS TOUGH ON DUI IF ITS A CITIZEN BUT ITS OKAY FOR HIS PEOPLE TO DRIVE DRUNK, EVEN HIS OWN SHERIFF CRAS PAYED FOR BY US - THE TAX PAYER?

unless you have gone to work daily & risked your life for a stranger for 26yrs, you have no clue! Police officers are exposed to horrible things we only see on rated R movies & we then go home. Try to pretend it was a movie every day & now turn it off. Take a few minutes & think about this imagine pretending it is ok at the end of your shift even though you just arrested someone who raped a child who will never be the same! Those who judge did you stop to think Terry has problems due to the things he saw and was exposssed to? Drinking and driving is WRONG! Saving lives, solving crimes and risking your life has a price and my brother is paying for it with an addition problem. He saved many lives, brough many loved ones answers and saw HORRIBLE things happen to women and children! Do not blame PBSO adminastration for trying to help a man who has done so much. He could have retired the other times but has a passon for helping strangers.. My brother is a hero & my brother has a problem but he will over come it with the help of those who care about him. Go help find a missing child, sit with someone who has lost a loved one to a gun shot or stabbing, or just had a child raped. Go to a drive by shooting and stand in the street, go to a crime sceen and sit in the blood stained room,go and hide because you have 6 people who wantr to kill you with machine guns, now go home to your wife and child and play prented it did not happen. YOU TRY IT!

To Poster # 50 I know who you are refuring to with the shoplifting crap , and for your information I have never posted anything about terry , he is a friend , and I have offered to be there just to talk if he needed it . So before you point fingers and “assume” just pick up the phone and call me , I read these post but never comment on them , but this time I did . I can see why anyone would be upset with all these hateful post about a guy down on his luck , but don’t attack someone who is not a part of that .
