Palm Beacher Rush Limbaugh went head-to-head with Star Trek actor William Shatner, of all people, on Shatner’s new one-on-one interview show on cable’s BIO channel, Raw Nerve.
What did Shatner want to talk about with the Conservative radio host?
Health care, of course.
Things got heated pretty quickly. And at one point, Shatner tried to make Limbaugh admit that the quality of health care in this country depends on whether someone has money or not.
“Well,” replies Limbaugh, “if you have money you’re gonna get a house on the beach. If you don’t have money, you’re gonna live in a bungalow somewhere.”

To Rush health care is a commodity like a house, car or television. If you have money, you buy it. If you don’t have money - well, too bad - you don’t get health care.

He just doesn’t understand that what he says about houses is the whole problem and that no one should be denied health care based on money. And even what he says about houses is false. If you don’t have money you don’t get a bungalow, you get a cardboard box somewhere.
If Rush worked for minimum wage and had no healthcare, he’d still be admitted to any emergency room in the country! As far as a responsible person chosing (purchasing) a healthcare plan for himself and his family, that is a liberty enjoyed by America and has been for a very long time! England/Canada have waiting lists and gov’t administrators making their choices for their patients, just like Cuba. To better understand the mistrust felt by Rush and others, one word; ACORN. Healthcare needs remedying, not socialism.
Maybe I’m naive, but if help care if so horrible in Canada, England, or other European countries, why aren’t the leaders voted out and the laws changed? I don’t understand why they would put up with it.

No matter what side someone is on, it always boils down to politics. Although I don’t agree with the current bill, I agree it should be debated. I am not sure healthcare is a birthright. After all when I went to college and then tried to find the best job. Benefits such as healthcare was a motivating factor for doing the best I can to get it.

Thank you Mannix for speaking the raw truth. It’s about working and prioritizing. Let’s face it, most people would rather buy the fancier car or house or clothes, go out more, etc, etc, etc. than spend that 3 or 4 hundred/month for a good health care plan (if they don’t have one via work). Or keep popping babies they can’t afford. Every person has the choice to buy health care and we have systems to help anyone that doesn’t for some reason. The few people I know from Europe hate their health care system and warn that Obamacare will be worse than what we have. It’s very hard to change their systems. Our system needs some work but not government run health care. Obamacare will be a cancer for this country for generations if it passes. This country has no accountability, no one takes any responsibility anymore. These modern liberal philosophies may just do what they intend……make us just like the rest of the world.

Its amazing to me to see Republicans admitting that health care needs fixing, now that they are OUT OF POWER. When they were in power, healthcare was not even on the radar screen. This fact tells you that they don’t really intend to change anything in the system.
And Melissa’s right. Why are all these other countries’ healthcare systems with all the issues critics mentioned, RATED HIGHER THAN OURS? Why aren’t their citizens in an uproar? Why are they healthier than us? One plus one equals two, but you anti-anything-positive folks want new math….

Anyone, money or not, can walk into an ER and get healthcare. The difference is who pays for it.
Interesting conversation, but truth is truth. Ask your doctor if he/she wants to be paid. They will say, “Yes”. So like it or not, it’s all about money. You can either GIVE money to people to pay for it, or the people can EARN money to pay for it. In the case of people who cannot work, or who have permanent ailments etc…they are already covered by the govt if they have no money. Ergo, this is just an argument about indigent people who WON’T work (the REAL ‘Dunderheads’) and/or Illegal Aliens who don’t want the govt to know they are here. The question is, what’s broken, the people or the system?

As much as I enjoy Shatner, he set Rush up by using a false premise as a question. No one in this country is refused health care, regardless of their ability to pay. Therefore, Shat’s question was irrelevant and Rush was correct in his comparison. To cure 80% of the health care cost problem, initiate TORT REFORM to keep more John Edwards from being formed.

Rush doesn’t get it. A population which doesn’t have to worry about basic healthcare can best direct its time and resources toward more noble goals like providing their families with a safe, secure bungalow, food, and an education adequate to compete in the modern, highly specialized world.
What I find funny about comments on blogs such as this is how cluless liberal democrats really are. I’m 60 yrs old making $9.00 an hour because of the poor economy and I do not have healthcare. And even though i am not covered I still do not want a government sponsored health insurance to cover men before I am eligible for Medicare. It’s bad enough the government is telling me what I can be covered for after I am 65 I sure as heck don’t want to be dictated to before then. As for those of you idiots that equate car insurance and healthcare as one in the same philosophy you forget that there are drivers who drive without insurance. And those of us with insurance pay for them being without insurance through higher rates and uninsured motorist coverage. If i suse the same argument you use for health insurance why doesn’t the government subsidize car insurance for those who are not able to afford. Oh I digress, that’s coming next.
Ask any English or Canadian citizen what they think of their health care. I have on vacation when I’ve met them and they will tell you that if push came to shoove for an important medical diagnosis or surgery, they would pay out of their pocket to come to America. As for the question - why don’t they just vote their leaders out and change the laws… once an entitlement program free anything is in effect, it’s very difficult to pull it back.
If we are going to overhaul health care then let’s take our time and do it right. Obama and his administration have shown themselves to be so inept at every part of the job, a little slower study of this for all Americans would be prudent. Just wait until your mom or daughter or son has a condition and the new healthcare plan decides it’s not cost-effective for them to get treatment. Then, will you think free healthcare that comes with tons of strings is great?
Just swell, people really want to add 2.5 trillion in debt to the mess of a deficit we already have? Now the Chinese will really own America, the dollar will be destroyed, taxes will skyrocket, and healthcare workers will be unionized. How’s 6 dollars a gallon of gas and all sorts of new taxes sound? Because that is what the Europeans pay for their “free” healthcare. Socialism sucks, the government cannot, never has, and never will, be able to provide the quality health care services private medicine can. Try the VA if you want your eyes opened to socialized healthcare. People really want to add a whole new layer of government employees and beaurocracy to the bloated government we already have? This country will get the crappy healthcare it deserves if this bill passes. For what it’s worth, only the few rich people in a socialized state will be able to afford quality healthcare, our system will morph into something like the Austrians have–crazy!!!! It would be better to increase competition by getting rid of the ridiculous state boundaries insurance companies deal with, spend some of that wasted porkulus cash for training doctors and renovating hospitals, and working out a bloc rate with insurance companies and pay the premiums for the truly needy people, and introducing real tort reform in the medical industry. If you want to be a socialist, move your ass to Europe.
Rush is absolutly correct! No one gets turned out of an emergency room, and there are programs in place for more serious problems. For those who want this obamacare bull crap I ask one thing….show me where in the US Constitution is health care a right?????? There isn`t! Healthcare is NOT a RIGHT. It is not listed in the Bill of Rights nor is it provided for in our Constitution. SOMEONE HAS TO PAY!
Why should I have to pay for someone else to have it, I work, I pay my own way, if I don’t pay for it, I don’t have it. Now the Federal Government wants me to work and give them my money so someone else can have Healthcare for free. And we are supposed to do this happily without knowing HOW MUCH IT WILL REALLY COST. Medicare cost 9 times as much as originally projected. If our new Healthcare system meets that record, we will no longer be free people - we will be slaves to the Federal Government.
Yes, there are folks who fall into the cracks and we have measures in place to address their situations.
Medicaid could be expanded WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK. Health Insurance regulation could be made to address pre-existing conditions WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK. It is possible to cut down costs with TORT Reform. WASTE and FRAUD in Medicare could be addressed WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK.
But our Political Leaders have not done any of the above measures in a cost effective manner. OH NO, They want to completely overhaul and stick their noses into an industry they know NOTHING about. They want Beaurocrats to decide what will be said and done by our Physicians. They want to control what procedures patients (we) are allowed to have. Then they want to give this wonderful FREE gift to everyone who is in our country, and likely to everyone who comes here and justs asks for it, FREE. And on and on and on (ad nauseum)… At costs we do not know and have no way of knowing, nor do they.
Bottom line is SOMEBODY HAS TO PAY and HELLOOOO Lefties, we are in a DEPRESSION. Where is the money going to come from? Ah you say, TAX the RICH - they will simply leave our country and YOU IDIOTS will be stuck paying the bill. 10 years from now you’ll be crying “whose bright idea was this mess?”.
I have never believed that I would receive Medicare or Social Security and I have no intentions of relying on Government provided Healthcare, I am making other plans. You should too.

I agree with Rush, if you have $ to buy the beach house then you can; if you have the $ you can buy better insurance. You get what you can afford, correct? We already have “socialized” medicine in this country-you go to the emergency room and get served, the rest of us and the hospital eats the bill, also you have County Hospitals. No you don’t get the same service that Rush may get, but you get served. Here is my problem, we let government in on health care, (take a look at the job they are doing in DC is that wise?) we are going to get the same quality of the County Hospitals. I have seen Canada’s, Russia’s programs, and have had friends in England as well. They will all come to the US to get immediate assistance than put up with their programs. Now if they have a day to waste for a cough, then they will use up the “free-bee.” Also look at the tax structure in these countries, 50, 60+% of income. Do we want that? And who will be paying 96% of the cost? The upperclass , then the middle class, and the rest will be free, sounds like more welfare to me. By the way, I am lower middle class, educated, and hard working.

Just ask yourself these three questions regarding Obamacare. How much will it cost, who will pay for it, and, will it work. 1. Cost is unknown and surely more than the the government says. 2. Those of us who work. Only 51% of workers pay federal taxes so of course the other 49% think this is a good idea. They aren’t paying for it. 3. Besides the military, what does the gov’t do better than the private sector.
in answer to melissa’s question about why countries with socialist healthcare don’t switch back…when you have more people on-the-take (over 50%) than earning wages, you CAN’T change it. why would the takers allow anyone to change things back from that cushy setup? in case you don’t know, we’re really close to that situation already–the bottom 50% of the workforce pays only 3% of all the the taxes collected in this country now–not to mention that there are a portion that get an “earned” income tax credit if they pay NO taxes. i’m not sure how that differs from welfare, but that’s another thing. once we end up with a few more “takers” the rest of us become slaves to them, at least till the entire system collapses under its own weight. it’s not a pretty thought, if you ask me!

Leon (3), if you do not pay money for goods or services, you are a thief or a slave owner. Both are illegal. True emergency care is already free for anyone - go to the emergency room. If you have money or assets, you will pay. If not, no blood from a turnip.
Artist (4), at minimum wage, I presume you have no assets, so you can walk into an emergency room and receive all manner of care, with no concern of losing your house as payment. You already have free health care, so what is your beef?
Huh (5), I am denied a mansion because I do not have enough money to actually pay for it. Should the government force other people to buy me a mansion or Cadillac just because I cannot afford them? I already get a Yugo (emergency room) for free. Would you rather the government confiscate more of your money for the guarantee of a one-room shack; or, would you rather be on your own but free to earn through your own work a nice ranch house? The risk is freedom, the handout is slavery. It would seem you are a wuss.
AB (17), you are just an American Brat, and you have never listened to Rush (you should try - its free, on the radio). I do not need Rush’s income to take care of my own health — the Army whipped people into shape with gravity and the ground, and you can get in shape without a gym, too. I love Rush & what he does, but I have taken better care of my body, and I have never needed insurance. I went seven years without — because, frankly, I knew I could go to the emergency room. In retrospect, this was a bit selfish and given my resources, foolish.
Some folks here are confusing health insurance with health care. Obamacare is offering health insurance, not the actual care. But Obama knows that when you pump demand by 40 million (truer numbers are closer to 10 million, but still), and limit the money going to the service provider (doctors, nurses), something gives. So you end up with resource allocation panels (aka death panels) who artificially limit the demand on the service providers, and decide society would be better served with you just taking a pain pill, rather than the government spending $15,000 on you in your last 5 years of life.
Which demonstrates the underlying problem with Obamacare: it devalues human life. To make the math work, Obamacare values lives based on age, and apportions services according to such assigned value. Is this the kind of society in which you want to live? Comments 1-5 already get free emergency care. Are you whining about no dental care? Buy a toothbrush, floss, tartar control mouthwash, and fluoride rinse (rather than beer or a doobie) and you don’t need it. I went seven years without a dental exam, and when I went in for cleaning, the hygienist had no clue & was blown away. She was blown away because I actually took responsibility for my dental health, unlike most folks, except for James (20). Here’s a clue that Obamacare sucks: nobody in Congress will have to use it.
Obamacare is ultimately about human dignity and work ethic: are you comfortable stealing from someone else, via the government’s gun, that which he earned through his own labor; and then using that money taken by force to establish a system that values certain human lives over others — that values the young over the old, the strong over the weak. Obamacare is heinous. It is evil. It is tyrannical. And I predict it will be opposed and beaten, if not by the legislative process, then by the ultimate check and balance of the Second Amendment. (And, there is always that Alinsky fave: civil disobedience – pump your withholdings to 9, pay all taxes but the health care tax, and dare the IRS to throw you in prison with the other 5 million protestors. As Alinsky counseled, “Once you accept your own death, all of a sudden you’re free to live. You no longer care about your reputation. You no longer care except so far as your life can be used tactically to promote a cause you believe in.”)

Most people that want NATIONAL healthcare, not reform as WE speak, are lazy slobs who either do not contribute to society at all or ignorant boobs who would rether drive their prius instead of buying insurance like a responsible adult. If you could afford a car or credit payment……you could have afforded insurance!
A family of four with parents in their 40s can get insurance for about $400.00 a month. Average cable bundle, cell phone bills, internet etc. about $450.00 a month yet we choose these over private health ins. The gov’t plan is $416.00 a month PER PERSON or $1664.00 which constitutes a “Cadillac” plan now. This is achieved by taxing every man, woman, child and illegal $266.00. 300,000,000 people taxed to insure 16,000,000. Small business and self employed will pay twice or be fined. All enforced by the IRS, you gotta love the gov’t.
I hear all this stuff about minimum wage. I made minimum wage when I was 15 working at a roller rink. If you are an adult making minimum wage and have a history of working in jobs that are only worth that you must have squandered your formative years, not taken advantage of opportunities or you have a degree in psychology. Go back to your mother’s basement with your Netflix subscription and get out of the way of the rest of us that want to do better after all it is success and profit that are taxed to pay for the rest of you.

The people here who don’t see healthcare as a commodity don’t understand what it is truly like in a socialized medical system. Everyone gets the same garbage for healthcare - unless they can afford to come here or go to a private hospital. The quality of care IS a commodity. Face it - you cannot take down the wealthy to raise yourself up. In many countries where they are “healthier” it is a cultural thing about food. In the USA, we have the freedom to eat junk food all day long, smoke cigarettes, or anything else that would be considered a drain to the socialized medical system. Of course, we all are paying for the poor health of everyone whether we like it or not because of insurance costs, but the government takeover of the system will not solve the problem. Healthier choices by people would - and it appears that some of these morons who want socialized medical care are taking their fair share of illegal drugs. If you really want freedom, reform the medical insurance system, not the delivery of medical care directly to the individual. That is too much control over your life.

As a medical equipment provider I see the feds now want to tax equipment manufacturers to lower the cost of equipment…WHAT? We have taken payment reductions for the last 10 years now all of the equipment is made in China because the U.S. makers couldn’t sell the equipment due to the insane cuts. 2100 pages of framework for healthcare reform sure sounds like it lower costs….NOT!
