publixA free 2010 calendar given out in Publix supermarkets has South Florida buzzing.

On it, chain officials thought it’d be worth noting that December 7 marks “Islamic New Year.”

How about Pearl Harbor? Isn’t it on Dec. 7, 1941, that the Japanese carried a surprise attack on Hawaii, killing 2,350 and injuring 1,177 Americans, and pulling the United States into World War II?

Oooops!

Said 85-year-old Harold Shore, a Pearl Harbor veteran retired in Delray: “That’s not nice thing to do!”

And that’s not it, said WFTL-850 AM afternoon host Jeff Katz. His studio’s phone lines lit up like a Christmas tree when he and fellow host Joyce Kaufman broke the story Wednesday.

“They put in Venezuelan and Cuban independence days,” he said.

And while some calendars now mark Sept. 11 as Patriot Day in remembrance of the 9-11 terror attacks, Publix’ freebies don’t include that either.

But the giant grocer didn’t forget Haitian Flag Day.

Katz

“Listeners went nuts,” Katz said. “Some of them were waiting for an hour to have their say. Some marketing genius at Publix decided to be politically correct and include South Americans dates for their South American customers.

“But most people are outraged by what Publix forgot. If you’re going to be that way, then how about including Israel’s day? They forgot that, too, despite the Jewish population here.”

A woman who called Katz’ 3-6 p.m. show Wednesday described how she went to a Publix and asked a teenage clerk for a calendar. The caller then asked the clerk if she knew about Dec. 7. Response? “Of course I know,” the clerk said. “It’s D-Day.”  (Slightly off! The invasion of Normandy to chase Nazism off the map started on June 6, 1944)

Publix spokeswoman Kimberly Jaeger e-mailed Page2Live that the calendar only noted “holidays” and not “days of remembrance and observance.” But that will change next year.

“We regret that . . . Pearl Harbor is not noted and as a result of customer feedback, we will add Pearl Harbor to next year’s calendar,” Jaeger wrote.

This year’s, she added, are no longer available.

How do you feel about Publix' omission of Pearl Harbor Day in favor of Islamic New Year?

So what? The Jewish community has all of their respective holidays on calendars throughout America. Why not Islam?

And for who would say “Why not holidays concernign Hinduism, Bahai, etc” - you are correct as well, but then again, Holidays which target a major populace should only be noted. Publix knows this, and included the Islamic holiday, as well as the other ethnic independence days.

The reference to Israel’s Day is funny. For one thing, having being raised and living in SoFla for 22 years, I have never seen the Jewish populace celebrate Israel Day. Also, you got 10 other holidays, including Rosh H, Yom Kippur, etc on the calendar…what more do you want. Let the other people have a piece of the pie. And I would rather not even get into the whole factor of whether Israel is truly a legit state.

The reference to Pearl Harbor is illogical because (1) it’s not a day that is technically “celebrated” and (2) the Islamic calendar is lunar based - hence, next year, it’ll be 2-3 weeks earlier than the year noted today.

Listen, this country is a melting-pot. We are always evolving in all particular demographics. The changes are evident in Palm Beach as well, and we should acknowledge such cultural shifts and celebrate them. The Publix calendar is one such example. Embrace it.

IT IS A FREE CALENDAR - don’t use it. People just look for stupid stuff to get worked up about. Get over it.

Good for you Publix for ignoring the racist pea brains (that’s you Katz)of America. Historically more horrors have been done in the name of Christianity than any other religion so maybe we should not celebrate Christmas, using the Katz logic.

Hey, GOOGLE certainly remembered Dr. Seuss’s birthday with a Cat In the Hat image….what do you think GOOGLE did for 9/11…..NOTHING! GOOGLE ignored ANY rememberance of 9/11…nothing. Erase it from memory..forget it…it wasn’t something we need to think about…forget it…forget it.

How about your local school board…. Why do you think veterans protested in front of the school board…because they were ignored. Veterans’ Day…ha!…forget it, forget it… Fighting to protect our country, losing your fellow soldiers is NOT worth remembering in this current school district or with the current school board members.

Erasing the past, makes it happen again. Remember and honor….change the school board members by voting them out.

  7. Comment by Michelle — January 7, 2010 @ 12:06 pm

They put in the holidays that one would typically go shopping to get some special foods to eat and celebrate. Can’t remember the last time I celebrated the bombing of pearl harbor with a cake or any special kind of food. Give me a break! Don’t we have better things to think of than these ridiculous things. I believe everybody has a right to have there holidays on the calander and although the rememberance days should be there as well, they are not really what Publix is going after.

  8. Comment by PublixSucks — January 7, 2010 @ 12:07 pm

Publix bastards are unAmerican MF’s….cater to the illegal bastards and their welfare sucking babies.

  9. Comment by Chuck — January 7, 2010 @ 12:12 pm

Publix replaced an American holiday with the Islamic holiday in order that its stores wouldn’t blown up by practitioners of “The religion of peace.”

  10. Comment by pinkie — January 7, 2010 @ 12:17 pm

Is this for real? Who the heck cares? Its a FREE CALENDER!

Why are people so offended by EVERYTHING these days?

  11. Comment by Bo — January 7, 2010 @ 12:20 pm

What bothered me the most about the Publix calendar was the sucky art work in it. Looks like sixth grade cartoons with all those black outlines. I’m sure they could have gotten a better artist to do the art work, but as they say, there’s no accounting for someone’s taste….all in their mouth, no doubt.

  12. Comment by JoseO — January 7, 2010 @ 12:28 pm

Isn’t it odd that the only Publix protesters come from the jewish community? Why are the jewish people lashing out at one of south Florida’s largest employers’? Publix didn’t do anything to hurt them. It looks as if the Jewish people are attempting to supress the Muslim people living in our community.

The Pearl Harbor attack was almost 100 years ago. It is time to move on. Since no one celebrates the American victory of the Spanish American War; Pearl Harbor needs to be put away.

Why stir up old wounds with our staunch ally; the Japanese?

  13. Comment by Mannix — January 7, 2010 @ 12:43 pm

No one should get fired for this oversight. It sure demonstrates the lack history being taught in schools. What happened at Pearl should be as emphasized as the 4th of July because WW II vaulted this already great nation into superpower status.
The person(s) who threw this slip-shod calendar together probably won’t be given the task next year.

  14. Comment by Terri Reder — January 7, 2010 @ 12:44 pm

Not only is this calander for their customers, but what about the employees that work for Publix? They come from different ethnic back grounds too. What is the big deal, we are all human. I am sure this was not done on purpose. This just give people something to complain about. Why not see the good in things instead of looking for the worst?

  15. Comment by staceyplmbchnative — January 7, 2010 @ 12:47 pm

isnt it a food calendar, meaning what holidays are to celebrate by eating…I dont think publix meant it in a harmful way, I think they were meaning days to celebrate eating, I dont think I would want to have a party and celebrate and eat on Pearl Harbor Day or Veterans Day or Memorial Day, those are mournful days and remeberance days, I think it was and is taking out of context but I most certainly understand the upset, best to have it removed from the free wall

  16. Comment by LINDA — January 7, 2010 @ 12:57 pm

They made a mistake, so apologize & reprint them! I’m sure they did not mean to disrespect anyone. Publix is the best grocery store in Florida.

  17. Comment by Mandy — January 7, 2010 @ 1:46 pm

Do we need free calendars to give us history lessons? We all know what September 11th and December 7th mean.
My free calendar had coupons. Thanks Publix, for giving me discounts!

  18. Comment by Kelly — January 7, 2010 @ 2:45 pm

I just checked the 4-5 calendars I have in the office. NONE of them denote Pearl Harbor day. It’s not a holiday! Is it nice to be reminded of? Sure. But I don’t see what the big fuss is.

  19. Comment by Louie — January 7, 2010 @ 3:04 pm

    Big fuss over nothing.
The country’s going down the bankruptcy tubes.
There’s a ton of stuff to get really upset over.
Do I even need to rehash them ?
Fire someone over this ? Good Heavens.
Probably 85% of Congress is financially ruining us.
    How about firing them ?
But hey, why worry about real isues ?

  20. Comment by s — January 7, 2010 @ 3:26 pm

Its a free calendar, why do people always think there was some ill will being done.
If I were Publix i would give out free calendars next year with no holiday’s listed, with a small note saying that the holder of the calendar could write in whatever freaken holidays they wanted. Because Publix will NEVER please everyone.

  23. Comment by Gina — January 7, 2010 @ 4:20 pm

Sorry… Publix does way too much in support of the community for people to be giving them this much grief. I think it’s fine… and even if they ARE wrong.. the positive things Publix does FAR outweigh this. Turn the page…

  28. Comment by jay — January 7, 2010 @ 6:54 pm

This whole thing is ridiculous. We shouldn’t be celebrating Pearl Harbor Day. That day was a total embarrassment for the US Military and represents what happens when America is asleep at the switch. Pearl Harbor should be commemorated on the same day we honor Veterans Day. But Pearl Harbor itself is nothing to be proud of!

  29. Comment by jay — January 7, 2010 @ 6:55 pm

Yes we should honor Islamic day…..after all, they
    brought us:

    9/11
    Foot bomber
    Underwear bomber
    Fort Hood Massacre
    even Merhage locally..

  31. Comment by 2slipry — January 7, 2010 @ 7:42 pm

Alright. Indeed, Pearl Harbor was over 100 years ago and needs to be at rest. Therefore and in all fairness, slavey was over 100 years ago and needs to bt put at rest. In addition, the Cubans, Haitians, Venezuelans, Guatemalans and the other 162 cultures here in Florida are in America for a reason. That reason must be for freedom from their own cultures. They have obviously renounced their own past; therefore, their future is here in the United States. GIVE IT UP PEOPLE. Start accepting and assimilating to OUR American ways. We did not come to your countries, you came to ours. Haitian flag day does not exist…Cuban day does not exist…neither does Venezuelan day exist. Go home to receive your freedom to complain about something that does not exist.

  32. Comment by BILL — January 7, 2010 @ 8:51 pm

  34. Comment by RobWPB — January 8, 2010 @ 7:02 am

..and Jay is an idiot. We are not celebrating anything about Pearl Harbor, it is a ‘Day of Rememberance’, much like Patriot Day, to remember those that lost their lives. Publix made a good point though, they did not include Remembrance Days, only Holidays. By the way, if I’m not mistaken, Publix is owned by Jews.

  35. Comment by obie one — January 8, 2010 @ 9:08 am

Next on the Obama agenda is Thanksgiving Day.

  36. Comment by APDDAWG — January 8, 2010 @ 10:46 am

To all of you who are complaining about the “complaint”….shame on you! Remembering an event that claimed the lives of over 2300 innocent Americans is not important to you? Celebrating the Islamic New Year should garner more attention?

I am absolutely disgusted by the attitude in this country! We need to get over Pearl Harbor? Get over 9/11? I’m sure the ones saying these things did not lose a loved one during those tragedies.

Very sad statement for this generation of Americans.

  37. Comment by ted — January 8, 2010 @ 11:40 am

Where are the calendars with the Miami Dolphin dancers??? Publix is a big sponsor of the Dolphins, come on give us those gorgeous girls and all will be forgotten!!!!!!

  39. Comment by Susan — January 8, 2010 @ 12:13 pm

After the founder George Jenkins passed away, everything has gone down hill with Publix. The policies on carry out service have changed, they are open on Sunday’s.Its real sad that the company has not kept policies in place. It by far the best super market anywhere.I just don’t like all the changes.I like the old school Publix much better.

  40. Comment by perspective — January 8, 2010 @ 12:13 pm

The country is changing. They took God and prayer out of schools and our courts. Reporters are not allowed to wear American flag pins on their suit lapels. And now we’re paying homage to Islam. This a great country.

  41. Comment by Brenda — January 8, 2010 @ 12:50 pm

First, this is a free calender and most people only want it for the free coupons that are in it. AGAIN I SAY FREE CALENDER…. Publix takes very good care of their community with the charities that they collect THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS for every year. Charities for children during christmas with the Santa Dollars to help with the gift giving for kids that would other wise not have a Christmas, Feeding South Florida to help the families that cannot afford dinners for Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Special Olympics and so many many more. Publix is a decent company that is concerned for the people in their community and that they may be able to make a difference, even if it is a small one. If you look at MOST calenders, you will see that Pearl Harbor is not noted on then and those calenders are not FREE…….. So maybe we should focus our attention on the rising gas prices, terrorist attacks and keeping our kids safe and not the publix calenders!! SO, if you don’t like them, throw it away, but be sure to give your neighbors the coupons in them, let someone use them that actually appreciates them……

  42. Comment by Ricardus — January 8, 2010 @ 1:25 pm

Of course, of course, the most important dates to be noted in any AMERICAN calendar are Constitution Day on September 17th and Bill of Rights Day on December 15th.
I am not politically correct and see no need to remember foreign holidays and since Islam is in favor of eliminating the need for Christian and Jewish Holy Days, their “days” are irrelevant and I don’t want to see them on my calendar. Call me a bigot or anything you like but I call me an AMERICAN!

  43. Comment by tom — January 8, 2010 @ 1:33 pm

NEVER, NEVER WILL I SHOP AT PUBLIX AGAIN!

  44. Comment by LW — January 8, 2010 @ 2:30 pm

Those who forget history are destined to repeat it

  45. Comment by Carol — January 8, 2010 @ 7:52 pm

Certainly Pearl Harbor Day is a day to remember & to keep in prayer. But good grief, I don’t depend on my free Publix calendar to remind me. My Publix calendar also did not include other days that were important to me, my anniversary, children’s birthdays, the days my parents died, but I’m not blaming the grocery chain. Instead, I’m just VERY GRATEFUL for the $21 in coupons included with the calendar. Most years I don’t even use the calendar but buy another one with artwork I prefer. This year I’m so broke I am happy to use this one on my wall.

Publix is a nice place to shop offering fantastic sales on groceries & more every week, in addition to good service & pleasant clean stores. They also close on Easter, Thanksgiving & Christmas so their employees can spend time with their families those days. Not many other big stores will do that.

I wonder if the folks complaining about the calendars will still use the coupons they got with them.

  46. Comment by FLAMINGO PARK QUEEN — January 8, 2010 @ 10:05 pm

Kvetch, kvetch, kvetch….Publix did this as a courtesy. If you don’t like it, don’t take it. If you don’t like Publix, shop at the level where you belong ..Winn Dixie!

I am a Publix shopper, it’s my favorite grocery store but I will by-pass them and go to Sweetbay. I remeber the time Publix did not open on Sunday. We vote with our Dollars and currently they say The United States of American and In God We Trust.

  49. Comment by upeoplecrackmeup — January 9, 2010 @ 7:03 pm

I really don’t believe the people at Publix sat around and made a conscious decision to leave Pearl Harbor Day OFF of their calendar! I believe they put “Holiday’s” on the calendar that generally involve special types of food or gatherings that involve food and they hope that people will shop at Publix to “celebrate” these particular holidays. If you do not agree with this “free” calendar than politely refuse it and go purchase one from Hallmark for $10.00 that has every “Holiday” or special occasion on it that you want to remember. Please people…in this day and age don’t we have bigger things to worry about?? Get Real!

What a sad, sad day for America. May God be with us all, We are Doomed !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  54. Comment by Carl in NC — January 10, 2010 @ 12:50 pm

Only officially recognized U.S. holidays should be on a calendar intended for the general public. Since we have people from all over the world, to do more would pretty much require that you include holidays from the entire world. Anyway, it was an incredibly stupid, insensitive and myopic thing to do. The people respnsible need to be removed from a position of responsibility.

someone should be fired over this. islamists need to go back to their country. have a wonderful day.

  57. Comment by Bill — January 10, 2010 @ 1:26 pm

Everything we need to know about Islam, we learned on 9/11/2001, so we sure as blazes don’t need to know their God foresaken holidays!
By they way - did we allow German and Japanese immigration DURING WW2? Why are we allowing muslims to continue pouring into this country, when we KNOW there are jihadist cells here and more forming? It’s as if our own government WANTS the USA to fall. Oh, I forgot - they DO.

It is only going to get worse. They are trying to take this Country over. Just look at how maney Muslims are in every different State. This only the beginning unless we get the mindless, Liberal judges and people that will not stand for the Constitution out of office.

  60. Comment by Dale — January 10, 2010 @ 2:15 pm

  61. Comment by Scott — January 10, 2010 @ 2:16 pm

We will have to cointinue shopping at Publix for those item that we need that are carried only by Publix. Until the new Publix calendar comes out, we will be shopping Winn-Dixie for meats and Farmer’s market for fresh fruits and vegetables and making a weekly trip to Whole Foods for both.
Until the next election I expect to see more and more pro-Islamic, anti-patriotic fecal matter in print by the big nulti-national corporations.

What I see, is this country is going down the toilet on the fast track because of the current resident who resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC.
When this person bowed down before the King of Saudi Arabia, he has made the name of United States of America a big joke.

Now as for this problem with Publix, even though they were trying to be PC, their advertising department needs to have their heads handed to them on a platter.

I would urge everyone to boycott this chain - usually actions speak louder then words - but lets keep it civil.

I’m afraid this country is well on it’s way to being destroyed from WITHIN. And to those jerks who claimed,
Pearl Harbor was over !00 years ago should go back to school and learn how to subtract 2010-1941= 69 years.
Just another example of the ignorance of a people who will destroy themselves.

  69. Comment by Carolyn — January 10, 2010 @ 2:38 pm

It obviously was an inconsiderate oversight on the Publix employees part. If I were Publix I’d forget about publishing a calender and stick to the grocery business. Use the money you save in the publication of the calender and lower the price of groceries.

  70. Comment by dale — January 10, 2010 @ 2:53 pm

To #49 upeoplecrackmeup….You don’t have to spend ten dollars at Hallmark for a calender. Drop by any veterans organization and pick up a “FREE” calender showing the true American days to celebrate. It’s people like you and thinking like you that has put this once great country on a downward slide. Get real you say, don’t tell right thinking people to get real. Yes we have much bigger things to think about, one being our liberal Commander in Chief. REAL AMERICANS SHOULD BOYCOTT THAT MARKET AND SEE HOW QUICK THEY WOULD PULL THOSE CALENDERS!!!!

  72. Comment by Diana Bowler — January 10, 2010 @ 3:06 pm

To claim it was an oversight is an outrageous lie!
How many people had to read, review, re-review, approved, send to a printer, the printer reads, the calendar is printed, shipped, and then distributed in the different stores. Management has the final say on any issue put out by their company. Who are they going to blame this on?
I feel this is shameful for Publix to do this and the American people should rebel.

I remember when President Bush’s daughters were arrested in a night club in Austin, Tx. It was very shaddy how Management treated the situation. You know what happened? Everyone boycotted the night club. He eventually had to close because of no business.
This should be the same for Publix.
THE AMERICAN PEOPLE SHOULD BOYCOTT PUBLIX FOR FAILURE TO SUPPORT THE COUNTRY.

Waiting til next year to amend the error is too late.
The American People are tired of just a simple apology.
There are so many simple apologies today, that they do not mean the same anymore. They have destroyed what an apology means.

    Shame on Publix!

To those of you who say it isn’t important to have Pearl Harbor on the calender: if you had been sitting at your table eating when that news came over the radio, you definitely would want that day noted on ANY calender. It was the most hideous news you could ever hear. Yes, I was the one listening to that news on that day. I suppose the rest of you still want 9/11 on there, because YOU were here when that happened? It should be on ALL calenders. The calenders from Publix should be your choice, and if you don’t like what is on it, don’t use it. As for me, I would not have one in my home.

John, the very first comment, 7 Jan, needs a briefing of what the melting pot really means. The various world views of America’s emigres melt down to the American amalgam as defined by the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and our founding history. It’s also a good idea to revisit THE FEDERALIST PAPERS for an insight as to what the Founding Fathers really meant as they formed the Consitution.

I think most of the comments miss the point!! The problem is not because traditional American holidays
are not listed, it is Publix willingness to cater to the failure of individuals from Cuba and other countries to assimilate into this (our) Country. Many of them seem to want to continue their prior homeland’s customs/mores — celebrating their prior homeland’s holidays seems just one more indication of this. If they came to this Country for a better life, it seems they should want to adopt more of our customs/mores while at the same time keeping many of their homeland’s customs.

I am so appalled at the comments from the stupid people out there….

This country was founded on Christian Principles: If you don’t like it, get out.

We speak English in America: If you don’t like it, get out.

If your out in public, and your not speaking English, expect to be told to speak English if you can. If it offends you, you have the right to leave OUR country.

As for Publix, I pledge to NEVER, EVER shop there again. I hope the rest of you that have something other than goo on your shoulders will do the same. I hope ever Publix store goes out of business.

Publix needs to immediately pull these calendars and make a public apology to real Americans.

  90. Comment by Jan — January 10, 2010 @ 7:40 pm

The more that idiots like the PC cretins at Publix chip away and America’s Judeo-Christian heritage, the worse our Country will become.

A grounding in decent behavior and the value of life as taught by the Jews & Christians are what has made this Country great.

Islam loves death and is NOT a religion, although it pretends to be one to demand and receive “equal treatment” although their “equal treatment” is much more pervasive than Jewish and Christian religions.

Islam is in fact a societal control mechanism disguised as religion. The founder was, it is believed by those who have studied his behaviour, an epileptic and a pedophile who killed people and robbed them and to keep his thugs in line shared the “loot” with them.

Boycott Publix until they create a calendar that tells about Judeo-Christian and American holidays and memorial events.

PC is for the heathens and is a good way to destroy what is left of our Republic.

StLouisBoy, i’m right on your heels and “I second” everything you said and then some. Any born American that isn’t outraged at Publix is either stupid or in a coma. The lame-brain that came up with the calendar commemorating days that have nothing to do with America should be fired. Florida is still in America isn’t it? I visit there often and will never shop at a Publix again.
And Publix adding calendar dates for their South American customers? You’re supposed to come to this country with the intent of becoming a U.S. citizen. Whatever happened to assimilation? Immigrants don’t come here to Shop at Publix. Immigrants are supposed to come to this country to join in and contribute to the beliefs, customs and traditions already established. Publix you have blown your image I hope for years to come.

  92. Comment by Ron Hill — January 10, 2010 @ 8:03 pm

The best way to show Publix that it is un-American to omit a recognition of one of the most significant day in our history. Some 2500 Americans died on 12/7/41 and Japan’s sneak attack (their diplomats were in Washington, D.C. “negotiating” a peaceful approach) dragged America into World War II — which eventually cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans — approximately 900,000 died. And Publix may not know it, but 87% of Americans believe that America is a Christian country. The U.S. certainly is NOT an Islamic nation; to the contrary, we are at war with Islamic jihadsts who hate Americans. Get someone with an education to prepare your calendar, or move to an Islamic country — there are many supermarket chains.

I believe in being fair, honest & just. I believe in INTEGRITY. I am in the minority. The type of men who defended the Alamo & died are now politically incorrect & socially unacceptable. No consequences for actions, no pledge to our country, no prayer in school or a moment of silence. Too many people live in virtual reality & many don’t care. When you are in concentration camps & your family is taken away then you will say somebody save us & you will learn to care the hard way. Freedom has been gone for a long time & you don’t even know it. Cowards will get what they deserve & It’s coming. It will be here very soon.

This is a disgrace! How can Publix forget to add such important dates in American History on their calendar! Are we to forget all the people who died at Pearl Harbor or on 9/11! We need to remind everyone our freedom is not free! There are many, many people who have died defending us and, because of them, I am sitting at my computer typing this note as a free person! God Bless America! Publix should be ashamed of themselves!

  97. Comment by willard adams — January 10, 2010 @ 9:06 pm

From the comments I’ve read most people don’t care about rememberng history or this country. The main concern is polictical correctness and anything for free. There’s a lot of good Americans long passed gone who cared more about freedom than the people that care about free stuff.

I am a loyal Publix customer, but this made my blood boil. Who was in charge and where do they work now, is my question to Pulbix. No accountability in our government and now at Pulbix. I guess I will have to shop somewhere else since my power is where I spend my money.

  99. Comment by FreedomToWrite — January 10, 2010 @ 9:52 pm

The ONLY reason Publix exists is because of the AMERICAN way of freedoms. Everyone in this blog and the broadcasting have the freedeom because of the American way. Without the hundreds of thousands of sacrifices after Pearl Harbor the Jenkins family would not have founded the store - the employees would not be owners - and none of the readers would have the life style they have today. Publix should reprint the calendars and should have a Public apology - this is America, not South America.

  100. Comment by Layla — January 10, 2010 @ 10:02 pm

I agree with the majority of the posts here. THIS IS AMERICA. YOU COME HERE BECAUSE YOU WANT TO BE AN AMERICAN. If you come in this spirit, you will be most welcome. IT SEEMS LIKE IT WAS A COMMON ERROR, BUT I DID NOT SEE TO MUCH REMEMBERANCE OF PEARL HARBOR IN 2009, SEEMS AS THOUGH THERE IS NOT TO MUCH REMEMBERING OF WHY THIS COUNTRY WAS FOUNDED, AS A REPUBLIC. SOME COMMENTS ARE CORRECT ITS NOT A BIG DEAL, I THINK ITS VERY IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THOSE WHO DEDICATED THEIR LIVES TO PROTECT OUR FREEDOMS.
TO REALIZE THAT THIS ADMINISTRATION DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE FREEDOMS THAT THEY ARE TAKING AWAY, THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF ITS CITIZENS.
HEAR IS A THOUGHT, WOULD THE ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS CALENDARS PUT ANY AMERICAN HOLIDAYS IN THEIR CALENDAR?
SURE BE NICE IF THEY DID, SORT OF BLEND IN AND SEE WHAT THIS COUNTRY WAS STARTED FOR, WHY WE HAVE A CONSTITUTION, THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, SOMETHING THE POLITICIANS HAVE FORGOTTEN.

    Publix,
I love you, but you really screwed this one up! Your an American company, founded by Americans, and owned by Americans. Do try to dodge this mess, but learn from it.

  103. Comment by Catherine Mahoney — January 11, 2010 @ 5:33 am

The fact that Publix employees put individual ethnic considerations first in their calendar is exactly the problem with this country. Rather than one AMERICA speaking with an AMERICAN voice it has become a country of individual bickering ethnic factions with total disregard for American values and culture. My grandparents were immigrants, but they never ran around demanding special treatment because…they considered themselves Americans first! They thanked God everyday there was an America they could escape to when things in their birth country went bad. Immigrants today do not hold this same respect. They spit on the country who has allowed them something better and many are not even legal immigrants. Immigrant children have no respect for America or its values showing disrepect to their teachers and carrying on about America being a bad country. They learn this from their parents who also lack any respect for a country giving their children a free education and free healthcare. People need to wake up!!! By disrepecting and ignoring the principles that founded this great country by our founding fathers we are destine to recreate the same disasters people run away from in other countries. AMERICA and AMERICAN history should be the focus for all of us. Ethnic backgrounds create the interest in our mixing pot here, but they should be secondary, not primary!!

Here is how i fill , you have all these people coming here from all over the world and all they want to do when they get here is bring all there countrys flag and fly it, and they want there holidays an so on it never stops. If that is what they want then they need to go back to there home land dont come here and want AMERICA to change for you. The future of staying in business is up to the store. Other businesses have taken a liberal position on American issues and thus the majarity of “citizens” took issue and stopped supporting the anti-Amercan, socialists,,, sounds like what happened to cnn, atlanta journal not so correct news paper, and the list goes on, seems to be a stupid thing to do, considering, it is because of the red, white, and blue that they exist in the first place. I didn’t capitalize intentially…

  107. Comment by john gagnon — January 11, 2010 @ 8:59 am

What if find interesting are the number of comments who say “who cares” and “why are people upset.” Yet, they take time to say “who cares.” Is not that a contraction of their own words to their actions? To find fault with caring, really just is a deflection of the core debate. A tactic often used when the uninformed speak. Well those who remember the importance of history care, those who understand the efforts of many who promote globalism care, I care. “All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men to nothing.”

Publix is a fine company and I should know. I retired after spending 25 years with them. I recommend that they pull the calender and donate it to the third world. I sure they could really use it and as they have not the opportunity of a education and they will not be offended.

  108. Comment by J. McCune — January 11, 2010 @ 9:02 am

I think it is worth getting upset about. It is just another example of a move to downgrade American history and culture and bring in everyone else’s holidays, a very small minority. It’s just an attempt to change our culture and make it a world culture. Slowly but surely the very left liberals are making gains for their agenda. If we are not diligent, we will lose our American culture. And why should we note a Muslim holiday? This was established as a Christian nation in spite of what the Left wants us to believe. All our Founding Fathers spoke of God and included mention of Him in their speeches and in their governmental activities. It has been a Christian nation until the last few years. No more Bibles or mention of God in our schools or public places, contrary to the Constitution!!!!! That’s one reason this country is going to the dogs!

  109. Comment by Ellen Underwood — January 11, 2010 @ 9:20 am

Apathy will kill America. Stand up, America, you have a GREAT history and that includes remembering it!

  110. Comment by J. Louis — January 11, 2010 @ 9:31 am

Alan, Jan. 7, you sure show your ignorance. You don’t know your history at all. Christianity is NOT the most responsible for the greatest horrors of history. Get an education before you spout off. Islam is the religion that hates and kills and forces people to believe their way or get killed or enslaved. Learn just a little about Islam and you won’t make such stupid remarks.
We don’t need all the holidays of other nations. When you come here, assimilate or go home. I don’t want my country to become a Third-World country. Americans have worked hard to make it what it is. We own nothing to the rest of the world, yet we give and give and give and get kicked in the teeth for it. Enough is enough already.

The posters who blamed the radio host and other “racists” are obviously very young - and quite obviously unaware of American history.

They would do well to open an American history book - and while they’re at it - look into their own family history to learn if any of their grandfathers, uncles or other relatives were murdered at Pearl Harbor.

Brave soldiers at Pearl Harbor died so that these sophomoric youngsters would have the right to make their naive and foolish statements.

Why on earth is September 11th referred to as Patriot’s Day???

  125. Comment by Ed — January 14, 2010 @ 11:17 am

This is just another form of disrespect for America which seems to have been brought about by the need for the grocery store to capitalize on individual segments in the American culture instead of properly identifying traditional holidays used for observance and/or otherwise. Someone mentioned it wasn’t suppose to indicate days of remembrance. I doubt they left out Memorial Day. I’m sure they heavily advertise that day to get people into the stores to buy stuff. If they choose to include other days of celebration they should only be included in a minor way otherwise it’s very disrespectful to the days that are celebrated or observed for a reason true to America. If they wish to include other non American holidays they should call it a world culutral calendar in which case the holidays noted should include all cultures not just the ones the creator can indentify with since America is essential made up of most of the cultures found in the world. A proper calendar should honor all traditional American holidays and important observed days by prominently marking them on the calendar.

I just read this article …sorry to say i was so late..there are some comments that i agree with and some that i don’t. Bottom line, Publix , I’m sure didn’t do iton purpose. I think they forgot, as many of these posts, that there are a still a lot of people who remember where we came from and a lot of people that don’t care. You must never forget and never “not care”. History has a terrible tendency to repeat itself. I can almost bet that most of the apathetic comments are from the younger generation and that is a terrible thing. I agree, I feel that the schools haven’t been teaching History like they did 30 years ago, if it did, then you wouldn’t have so many of these comments. In this last 30 years…there is a serious decline of Patriotism ,Government Support and just plain decency. As far as the comments about the “Jews” making the most of these comments. I’m sorry, how do you know this?. I don’t see any comment in here that points to Jewish people. This country is a Melting Pot, always has been and always will be. We need to respect everyone
