Report: Wellington polo boss John Goodman allegedly a coke fiend

John Goodman, the multi-millionaire Texas polo player and owner of the International Polo Club Palm Beach under investigation for his role in a fatal car crash a week ago, once had a cocaine habit.

And it caused such havoc on his family that his ex-wife, Carroll Goodman, told a Houston court during the couple’s divorce in 2008 that she feared for the safety of their two children, 11 and 14.

Carroll asked the judge to suspend John’s visitation rights until he submitted himself to random drug tests.

The paperwork, dug out by the Houston Press, could become relevant in the investigation into the accident death of 23-year-old Scott Wilson. The recent graduate from the University of Central Florida was headed home about 1 a.m. Friday when his Hyundai was struck by John Goodman’s Bentley. The Hyundai was projected into a canal upside down, and according to his family, Wilson drowned.

Palm Beach Sheriff’s deputies, meanwhile, are investigating whether alcohol was a factor. Goodman was treated for minor injuries and hired Miami lawyer Roy Black to handle the situation. Goodman has not been charged with any wrongdoing or ticketed.

For more, look below or click

Black didn’t return a call for comment about the divorce papers.

PBSO spokesman Eric Davis said that toxicology tests are not immediately requested when blood is drawn from a motorist involved in a car crash. Authorities obtained a sample of Goodman’s blood to check for booze.

“But if the accident investigators find probable cause to test for certain drugs, they make that request,” Davis said. He didn’t comment of whether PBSO is having the lab test Goodman’s blood for coke.

If you believe his ex-wife, however, Goodman has been struggling with the white powder for years.

“(John Goodman) has a history of substance abuse, namely cocaine use,” the divorce papers read. “Because of this, both (Carroll) and (John) agreed that (John) would submit himself for the purpose of the random drug screen for cocaine.”

Thing is, John didn’t return calls from a doctor trying to set up a date for the drug screening, and asked the court to suspend his visitation rights. The judge refused.

Glad to see somebody has decided to check-into his Texas past! I’m sure there’s LOTS more…keep digging!

By-the-way, biomedical laboratories only have to keep a blood sample for 7 days. The time limit is up tomorrow! I hope PBSO has ordered the sample seized and held for further analysis!

Money can’t bring him back and it sure as hell won’t clear your conscience. Please do what is right and send Mr. rich bentley driver to jail. Lock him up with Big Bubba. If nothing to hide then there should be no problem with a little Test? Johnny can we get a little hair folicle Test? It will tell the Court what you have been up to lately. BINGO. He has lost close to a hundred pounds, perhaps with a little help? Where was Johnny going that late at night? Care to take a guess? BINGO AGAIN. Sometimes after several drinks a little nasal deprevation kicks in. That shit never works. Addicts are NOT supposed to have ANY mind altering substances, unless you have complete control of the disease called addiction.

  13. Comment by Ed — February 20, 2010 @ 12:48 am

I am so lucky that the many times that when I was young and in the club scene how many times I have drove home while drinking. Yet, I am now at the age of 47 and realize that; that something this horrific could happen! Yes, he is rich, and this will drag on. It could happen to anyone. How do you get the message across that you can’t drink and drive while you are bombed out of your mind? I guess you can’t.

  14. Comment by carol — February 20, 2010 @ 12:50 am

this guy is scum of the earth! How can he sleep at night?…hopefully he can’t. I think this man has no heart or soul. You don’t leave a fellow human being to die like a dog on the street. Scott Wilsons mother is too nice of a person. If it were my son, I would be outraged. Hopefully she has had time to think and is going to keep after the PBC sheriff office to put this creeep behind bars just like the rest of us poor people would be if we didn’t have status and money. Please Mrs. Wilson, do not let your son die in vain. Prosecute this SOB to the fullest extent of the law and fight for your son. He probably would be alive if this rotton so called human being did not leave your son to die.

  16. Comment by both sides? — February 20, 2010 @ 6:44 am

This has been troubling to me since I saw it on WPTV last week. The current mayor of Wellington was quoted thusly:

“Schofield and Mayor Darell Bowen say they know Goodman well-and are like most in the town- stunned.

“You’ll get reactions from both sides,” Bowen said. “Some are angry. I see both sides.”

    http://www.wptv.com/content/news/centralpbc/wellington/story/Billionaire-may-have-been-drinking-in-fatal-crash/aynGe96lbkeB9nUn3LVCjw.cspx

I’d like to hear what “seeing both sides” means from Mayor Bowen, who is up for reelection on March 9. Is he attending the funeral today? Perhaps he can explain it to Scott’s mom, how he sees “both sides” because he must be a hell of a lot more wiser than me….

  17. Comment by Rotten — February 20, 2010 @ 6:59 am

This was a tragedy. But no one allegedly hires a hi powered atty …except they think they have access to corrupting the system or buying off a judge….

The laws are the same, regardless of your atty…so if its about the law…why pay some atty millions?

Why? Probably because ATTYS have ATTY Friends and Judge Friends and Politician Friends and Law Enforcement Friends…and one can imagine that bunches of that money gets sprinkled around to all kinds of supposedly Legit yet corrupt public and private officials.

Its nauseating. It used to be, idealistically , we would fight for freedom, justice our govt etc…

NOW…the bad peeps have infilitrated public trust institutions at all levels, they do bad things and actually plot against us it seems.

Look how often Politicians listen to their constituents and then do EXactly the opposite of what the people want.

Why? One can only assume they are being bribed or unduly influenced.

Think that’s a wack conspiracy theory?

Check out the Former RRA LAW FIRM, Scott Rothstein and the laundry list of top local, state, Federal, law enforcement, lawyer judge, bar association types he allegedly corrupted to the core. and of course the one’s he corrupted were the one’s we were counting on to protect us from Corrupt, Criminal Attys and Law Firms.

  19. Comment by Houston — February 20, 2010 @ 7:06 am

Here is an online excerpt from the Houston Press I believe….just google John Goodman Cocaine Houston and you will find all kinds of stuff.

This is going to shake out as another Legal System Corrupt Shakedown of a client and the justice system……all hiding behind a horrible and emotional tragedy that nothing can change now.

According to that motion, Goodman did not follow Altschuler’s recommendations. And the motion went on to say the following:

“Respondent has a history of substance abuse, namely cocaine use. Because of this, both Movant [Carroll] and Respondent [John] agreed that Respondent would submit himself for the purpose of the random drug screen for cocaine as requested by Dr. Altschuler.”

The motion goes on to state that John Goodman did not return Altschuler’s phoned attempts to set up the drug screen. The motion makes note of the standard visitation schedule for the children, and then goes on to state: “Movant is fearful for the safety and well-being of her children while they are in the possession of Respondent because of his history of substance abuse and his refusal to submit himself for drug screening.”—Houston Press Excerpt

Sadly, deaths caused by drunk drivers cause scores of deaths every day in the U.S. and are all too frequent in Palm Beach County. Where is all the self-righteous rage when the perp is an average Joe? How many of you are contributing to M.A.D.D. or taken some other action to help reduce DUI slaughter?

Most of you are fired-up in this case not because of any special empathy for the victim, but rather, you’re expressing hatred because the perp is rich, has a Jewish name, was considered a leader of an industry, and helped many charities.

Your vile statements that are generated by class envy are belittling to those of us who feel true sorrow for Mr. Wilson and who have taken action against DUI slaughter.

  21. Comment by Call JDL — February 20, 2010 @ 7:21 am

#20 People are enraged by anyone who allegedly gets special treatment for a price. Are you saying he’s jewish too? Are you intimating this outrage is Anti-Semitism…..that’s like alleging that outrage with Madoff or Picower or Rothsteen or Adelman or Frankel or Lubin, etc is invalid because they are jewish and its just anti-semitism.

    ++

We all know regular people that are pulled over for a seat belt violation and within minutes hauled off to jail for suspected DUI.

    +

Again , below is an online excerpt from the Houston Press…but what seems to have happened here….looks corrupt.

“After we got off the phone the first time, we saw a car completely submerged in the canal, except for the black tires,” he said.

Evidently, they then called 911 again. “We asked the dispatcher if we should jump in and see if there was anyone to try and save, and they told us not to jump in,” says the 20-year old.

Citing the ongoing nature of the investigation, the Palm Beach Sheriff’s department won’t yet confirm or deny who made the 911 calls or release them to the public. The anonymous witness says that when the tapes do become public, you will hear him telling the dispatcher that Goodman is AWOL from the scene of the wreck.

‘We were here until 2:15 in the morning and he was nowhere in sight,” he says.

And there is an even more shocking allegation, this one directed at the Palm Beach deputies investigating the wreck. The witness claims that he was not questioned. At all.

“I think it’s odd that they never took a statement from us and they never asked us what we did and they just told us to leave,” he said. —-Houston Press

  22. Comment by Just Curious — February 20, 2010 @ 7:31 am

I wonder is they found anything of “interest” in the car or on his person….?

  23. Comment by West Palm Native — February 20, 2010 @ 7:33 am

Call DL, I stand by my statements. It’s far from being proved that Goodman has received special treatment and based on my conversations with law enforcement, it’s very likely that the full force of the law will be brought against Goodman and then some.

And you and the others would not be bothering to post blogs and spew venom if the perp were a sales clerk.

So stop the stupidity and get back to your day job or start using your descretionary time to do something good for society.

  24. Comment by SusanB — February 20, 2010 @ 7:35 am

To West Palm Native at 7:14 am. We’re JUST as outraged at the “Average Joe” who drives and drinks.
The difference is that the “Average Joe” would be in jail right now, not able to hire a high priced lawyer and walk. THAT’S the difference!

take everything he owns, and lock his fat azz up for life. This piece of garbage should be in jail right now with no bail. Bet he does minimal time and pays off the family.Condolences to the family of that young man.

  27. Comment by David Tarnov — February 20, 2010 @ 8:29 am

SusanB, there was a detailed explanation in a PBPost article that sets forth the likely reasons Goodman has not been charged. There was commentary by former prosecutors, defense attorneys and others. I suggest you and others read it before condemning law enforcement for not yet charging Goodman. If they were to charge prematurely, it could jeopardize their case.

    So calm down.

And I agree with Native, the comments herein reflect vicious bigotry and not sincere sympathy. My guess is most of you morons have never posted comments about a DUI death until this one. Are you also posting threatening comments against the corporate chiefs at Toyota, who were knowlingly manufacturing death machines?

I doubt it so please shut up.

    To 20, 23, and you David 27,
This walking piece of flesh’s religious preference didn’t even come to mind when I saw this story. My first response was, this guy left the seen of a horrific accident and left a young man to die. The most astounding thing is he wasn’t arrested like I would have been in the same situation. DUI check? Did they make him walk the line or watch the flashlight? OR submit breath test?
I hope we don’t have another OJ here. But I can see the writing on the wall.

Don’t use the Jew card, that’s weak.

My sincerest condolences to Scott’s family. I was moved by his mothers interview in the Post. It is unfortunate that the story of his beautiful life is being overshadowed by the publicity given to the rich sleezebag who ended it

  30. Comment by Nancy — February 20, 2010 @ 10:14 am

This isn’t about race or religion! This is about a wealthy member of Palm Beach society who is being treated TOTALLY different than the Average Joe would be after an at-fault, fatal motor vehicle accident!

  31. Comment by D-Man — February 20, 2010 @ 10:47 am

My heart goes out to the Family, and friends of the victim. This will be a case that even a big shot attorney will not be able to win for his client….IF…. the public demands justice….and the prosecutors have the —– to pursue every detail, and send the case to jury trial. A fair and just trial is essential. The victim’s family needs to have this done right, and the public must demand equality, not prejudice for all parties. If Goodman was drunk, or on drugs, or both….let it all come out at his trial. If found guilty…he should pay with the same sentencing guidelines that apply for all convicted felons. The public can demand justice. Its in our hands, and up to the prosecutors to do whats right.

  32. Comment by no justice jus us — February 20, 2010 @ 11:00 am

Only in palm beach county…take the law into your own hands because if you are not part of the wealthy here you are nothing, your life means nothing to our state atty and the rest of these crooked so called law men here in palm beach…when are we as citizen gonna stop and stand up to the corruption that is running wild in palm beach county…if you got money you can do whatever you please and get away with it.the state atty, will allow anyone with money to turn their self in whenever they want to but if you are the average broke joe you are held without bond because you are a flight risk, but jeffery epstien, goodman are not flight risk when they have the money and means..all of palm beach county leaders are corrupt ,its been proven….

John re 6th amendment- go back and read it again. “the ACCUSED is entitled to a fair and speedy trial” HE HAS NOT EVEN BEEN CHARGED!!!! He was not taken into custody, brought in by the authorities, brought before a Judge to have charges filed. He was allowed to leave the accident scene and go about his everyday activity. Undernormal circumstances he would have been cuffed, given a breathalyzer, taken to the station booked, interviewed and brought before a judge for charges to bee filed. He was not . In most circumstances if the driver is suspected of DWI it is determined then, not weeks later after tests. THIS Is special treatment. Ask anyone who has beeninvolved in a crash while under the influence. Off they go right to Jail. As I said “CODE CAVIAR” is in effect.

  44. Comment by Sheryl Winters — February 21, 2010 @ 12:43 pm

I just read an article in the paper about the cornerback for the Miami Dolphins that was stopped for DWI,A test for alohol was administered at bthe scene and the results were published in this article,Even if John Goodman had his test administered at the hospital why were the results not published? It seems that if drugs and alcohol were not a factor in this accident he would want people to know this and end the speculation instead of stone walling

  45. Comment by john — February 21, 2010 @ 2:00 pm

    to ON THE PLANE 2…

Of course he wasnt charged.. if he had been.. speedy trail would have began.. as long as they dont charge him immediately, they can do a very thorough investigation and have all their cards in order.. the minute he is arrested.. the clock starts ticking… and toxicology takes WEEKS to get back… why, on a case which involves death, would ANY officer or attorney want to rely on breathalizer, which would can only estimate blood alcohol content when the law allows a forced blood draw from a DUI suspect.. and not only see how much alcohol was in his body, but drugs too.

The problem with you ON THE PLANE.. is that youre too far in the clouds to understand how the law works. Youre simply ignorant to the way it works…

When someone is involved in a DUI crash involving death… the case becomes VERY complex.

  46. Comment by bill — February 22, 2010 @ 12:32 am

Goodman will most likely not bet truthful with police, which will add to his pending charges. Others that may lie for Goodman, will also have their own serious legal problems(not worth it). Like where and what was Goodman doing that night and who was with him? This guy needs to get honest and sober!

  47. Comment by Riv Goshen — February 22, 2010 @ 9:33 am

  48. Comment by Wellywoman — February 23, 2010 @ 12:54 am

While Mr Goodman may have driven under the influence, (just as many of us, unfortunately have) the similarity stops there. To flee the scene, leaving the driver of the car he just t-boned to drown, is beyond reprehensible. Apparently, Goodman was so self-centered that he couldn’t take a moment to help his victim out of a watery grave. Or dial 911 from his cell, for that matter. Mr. Goodman’s money may buy him many things.A peaceful night’s sleep without waking in a cold sweat from re-living that night, over and over, will not be one of them. Goodnight, John Goodman.

Please god, hold all those who have been hurt here in your hands.
I pray investigation will reveal enough to hold accountable.
DO NOT DRIVE after midnight unless absolutely necessary. Your chances of being involved in a drunk driving or sleep deprived state crash are greatly increased.
Please hold judgement until the facts come out.
We don’t know yet if both vehicles had their headlights on, or if Mr. Goodman was knocked silly and had this as excuse for his behavior…
Most likely though, considering his ex made previous pleas and allegations on behalf of her children, that these children also are victims and it is likely sheer luck they remain alive.
Statistics show that such allegations by mothers in cases of Domestic Violence are rarely fabricated. Sadly, statistics also show that the perpetrators are allowed access to continue their abuse in this current legal system since it is based on reducing child support for fathers by giving them more custody, as long as the children have remained alive, regardless of their pleas.
If the trail of investigation is followed, this driver may be linked to other vehicles that were run off the road; at his age, he has likely harmed many by now…
I hope time and effort will be devoted to holding the guilty accountable, for all our sakes.
Dear god please touch the hearts of the Wilson family with forgiveness. Please turn hearts away from this drinking and drug culture that exists in the USA and the stigma against help for mental health, where our young are encouraged to turn to drugs and alcohol rather than a doctor’s care for depression, and thus begins down the road to destruction.
