Rush Limbaugh cares as much for baby turtles as he does for the Democrats’ jackass.
Palm Beach radio talker Limbaugh is sick of laws protecting the giant marine reptiles, and he wants everyone to know.
Limbaugh is buying newspaper ads this week — one in today’s Shiny Sheet and another later this week in the Palm Beach Post – to poke fun at the Town of Palm Beach’s policy that force the 300 or so households lucky enough to live on the beach to turn off outdoors lights from March 1 until October 31.
Within that time span, giant sea turtles — including several endangered species — dig the sand in the middle of the night to lay eggs, and their babies hatch in early fall.
Artificial lights are known to confuse the animals. They use the moon to navigate to nesting grounds then back to the ocean.
The Conservative lightning-rod Limbaugh lives on a $50 million-plus beach compound that includes a 32,000-square-foot home smack dab in the middle of turtle country. (see it here)
In his ad, Limbaugh mentions a phony group, the Turtle Preservation Society of Palm Beach, welcoming back turtles and hatchlings.
“The lights are off in eager anticipation of your arrival in May,” the ad reads.

“Kathryn (Rogers, Limbaugh’s galpal) and I bought a full page ad in the Shiny Sheet Sunday to make a subtle protest of all the local and state ordinances requiring people who live on the beach in Palm Beach to go dark EIGHT months of the year (!!!!!) for sea the turtles,” Limbaugh told Page2Live in an email.

“I love landscape lighting,” Limbaugh wrote Page2Live. “It is an art and we love to sit outside all year and enjoy living on the beach. Foxes regularly visit our property and we need to be able to see them to protect the dog and cat while we are outside.
“Imagine if you were told all your street lights had to be off for 8 months to protect the mating habits of geckos and feral cats, or whatever animal.”
Limbaugh, who has about 15 million listeners on any given week, talked about turtle protection Friday on his show, labeling turtle activists “environmentalist nutcase wackos.”
He said he does care about the turtles, but a start of dark season on May 1 would be just fine.

I side with Rush on this. It’s insane to expect beach-front property owners to keep all lights off at night for half the year. There are safety and security concerns for “humans.” Enough with all this eco-nonsense.
I heard the Rush Limbaugh tirade about turtles and light, and, although I have only memory on which to rely, I am not sure the **Post** is 100 percent accurate. I came away with the impression that Rush thought that the length of the light-ban period was his main focus, not the ban itself. He seemed to know the turtle habits but thought the ban period didn’t fit with the habits.
Another slanted poll to make people hate the wealthy! Why not ask “would you agree that the goverment can force anyone to turn off their lights at nite for the protection of a wild animal?” Then I am sure the response would be different but as all liberals you think straight out of the same playbook.

There are turtle safe lights available…. Rush can afford to install the special light fixtures. He’s just being an pompous rich ass, as usual.
It is rare for turtles to be seen in daylight on the beach, as it’s their survival instinct to nest in the dark. Ordinary artificial lights at beaches confuse the little hatchlings, which use moonlight and the phosphorescence in waves washing on the beach to guide themselves as they’re emerging from their nests into the sea. Sometimes the lights lure adults away from the sea as well. There is sound scientific evidence for this, and the effectiveness of the lights out for sea turtles regulations are proven.
Almost all sea turtles are endangered and need protection from ignoramuses like Limbaugh.

It is a well known fact to natives like myself that the turtles come ashore at night, in most instances, to lay their eggs. The turtles are more important than Rushtard! One of the other letters mentions special lighting that will not impede the turtles beach approach…Again, Rushtard can use the money from the sale of his ostentatious New York “pied-a-terre” to pay for some new lighting…
The poll is poorly designed and poorly worded: essentially Rush has said that the ban is too long because it begins March 1st and the turtles don’t show up until May. Furthermore, he has personally seen (he lives there after all) turtles coming up to nest in broad daylight, which questions the veracity of the claim they nest only at night and get confused by residential lights. Perhaps the turtle experts ought to chime in and let the Town of Palm Beach know what a reasonable policy should be.
Imagine that an American bald eagle is taking up residence on your chimney, no matter what, we can not kill the eagle or indirectly cause it to go away-our only recourse is that it may choose to leave on it’s own. Fact is, our (all humans) actions should have no effect on federally protected animals in order to improve our own situation, or make things more convenient for ourselves. The animals are in a troubled state because of us, so federal laws are crafted to preserve the longevity of species. It is a fair law, so either move to another part of the country, or have an exterminator remove the foxes, they predate on sea turtle eggs and hatchlings. Consider the big picture for once and not own own little world.
How sad that Mr. Limbaugh should so little concern for the species with whom he shares the planet. I hope it makes people think twice about crediting his other opinions.

We were chased down by a “Protector of Turtles” and threatened with a fine. Are you kidding me? If you ask me, lights should be out all year. For those of us that were born here, whose parents and grandparents were born here, realize the importance of preserving the ecosystem. Maybe one day my children and grandchildren can experience the wonders and beauties that I have experienced and have grown to love. If it means cutting my lights out, it is the least I can do. But then again, beach erosion is getting worse and worse every year, so hopefully Rush’s 50 million mansion will be washed out to sea sooner than later and the beach will belong to the turtles once again. Get the hint Rush, we don’t want your kind here.

FYI the picture in the add is of a juvenile green sea turtle not an adult. While these juveniles do live on the reefs of Palm Beach County they certainly do not crawl ashore to nest. I wonder how much Rush paid to have this picture made in Photoshop?

I live in South Florida, near Rush. First: turtles will come up on the beach, lights or not. There are plenty of hotels along the Gold Coast that have turtle nests behind them. Two: This is a Palm Beach regulation. Other counties, cities and towns along the coast do not have these same restrictions - and guess what, the turtles come up on the beach. Turtles aren’t exclusively laying eggs behind the mansions on Palm Beach. They’re laying them all over the coastline - lights or not. BTW, I agree with some others - very slanted poll. Nice try.

I am a republican and also believe in protecting endangered species. I worked on a sea turtle project in Florida for 4 years. Rush…. you should know that there are PLENTY of sea turtle friendly lights and fixtures that you can install so you can have your landscaping lighting and also not endanger this special reptiles. You make enough money… you can afford them!
If the ordinance is in place when one buys beach property, then one may stand ion shaky ground to complain. However, if the ordinance is introduced or expanded while one owns the property, then one is owed compensation by the ordinance makers. Perhaps Rush could dock a fleet of boats off shore, and run lights on them all night long which would be brighter than his landscape lighting, thus not making turtles go ashore…

Yes there is turtle-friendly lighting that is easy to get at your local Home Depot or Lowes. For those that say sea turtles don’t start nesting till May need to do some research. Loggerhead’s start nesting in May, green’s generally start nesting in June. However, Leatherbacks begin nesting in March. Anybody who buys property on the ocean should know what they are getting into…Rush do some damn homework….lighting ordinances are not new! Another thing, comparing an endangered species to an exotic species is just about the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard off. You like to sit outside at night…I hope the no-see-ums consume you so we don’t have to listen to your crap.
