Saturday’s Cracker Ball was Palm Beach’s time to poke fun at Florida crackers, instead of the contrary. Organized by the Gentlemen of the Garden, the fund-raising arm of West Palm Beach’s Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, the party lured slightly more than 100 people at Casa Phippsberger, the historic 6-acre Phipps Estates property of Bob Eigelberger and sculptor Susie Phipps in Palm Beach.

Redneck = derived from individuals having a red neck caused by working outdoors in the hot sun.

Here’s MY definition of “White Trash”:
Women who get Botoxed, lipo’ed, injected,and implanted; women who whore themselves out to wealthy men their grandfather’s age; women who adorn themselves with the expensive products of other women (and men and children) kept in poverty;
Men for whom making time with these women is ego-boosting, even if the women they prefer are the ones they secretly visit in Florida’s many strip-clubs (IOW, their hero is Tiger); men who think support-payments is the definition of “fatherhood”; men who think they are the real productive members of society when they actually produce nothing while using the term “earning” for the free money they accrue in banks, stocks, etc.
People for whom what (and, in many cases, whom) you can buy is the measure of a man, and what something costs is its value.
In general, people are “White Trash” when they hold themselves in high esteem because of their confusion of vanity with value.

I myself am a redneck and have attended several “white trash bashes”. I’m not offended and I think it’s funny. Rednecks give you a lot of material to work with. When I think of my redneck family back home, I think of small communities that care about one another, family values and people over materialism.

I have a bachelors degree in Business and my wife is a nurse yet because where we built our house (on the outskirts of the suburbs) we were asked by one of my mother in laws freinds “are we scared of our redneck neighbors”. I think everyone is right that this is very, very poor taste on the part of Palm Beach high society. I came back to see the repulsive pictures one more time. What a train wreck. I see several reasons why people are rightly outraged:
Term “Cracker” wrongly used. It is a term for pioneer families (both rich and middle class) that had Florida Farms and moved cattle across the state. Not low-life’s.
Making fun of any class is really hateful. I won’t go into specifics but it’s mean and childish. Whether someone laughs or points at someone with glasses, missing a limb, large bosom, or has a bi-racial child, that is nothing to make fun of. We are all different. Some choose, some are born that way.
If people want to have a party, or a costume party, have one, and enjoy it. Just don’t make it a (tasteless) theme, publicize it, and say it is to raise money for charity. I too, am appalled that the Norton was part of this.
The people in the photos are noticably buzzed, whether from drinking, smoking or some other substance. Didn’t they learn years ago to keep personal lives hidden? I have a drink now and then but wouldn’t be filmed dancing on a table or wearing revealing clothing. That is in poor taste and might even be called attention whoring.
Hope this teaches people a lesson. I might not have as much money, but have more class in my little finger.
Simply tacky. My family has been in Florida since 1780 and although we’re not poor, I am proud to call myself a cracker. For more than 200 years our family has contributed time, money, land and even lives to making Florida a wonderful place to live while holding onto outdated notions like courtesy - toward everyone. (And before you ask, we actively helped escaping slaves and never “owned” any). It’s unfortunate that parasites like these have come into our state, contributed nothing to its well being, and taken it upon themselves to opine on a culture they clearly don’t understand. How could they? It’s based on a sense of personal integrity and an appreciation of one’s history, neither of which they have. The poor manners are disgusting, but it’s almost worse that no insult was intended. These transients, and those above commenting that we should all “lighten up” and accept the insult, genuinely don’t know any better. How sad for them and their children to live without grace.
Having grown up in what is referred to as a Blue Blood Yankee family it ceases to amaze me at just how limited those people in the pictures are. Did they have a calling out for the most hideous creatures Palm Beach could scrape up? They do realize that collectively and individually they are all horses asses. I will petition International Polo to have all of the participants banned for life. Reflectively none of the last names end in vowels, HHHHMMMMMMM ! that bespeaks volumes.

Let’s try that again: money does not equate to acceptable behavior. It also tells me Mr Boehm and his ilk are indeed wannabees if that is the standard for a stratospheric event. Try going to a truly solid charity event in an actual city and you’ll find that $200 is quite a bargain. How do people that old remain that tastelessly naive?

I don’t think the intent of the Gentlemen of the Garden was for their party to be considered “racist.” How about some of those individuals who throw a “Tax Party” where everyone comes dressed in their best poverty outfit - holes in the shirts, pants, shoes, socks and their pockets turned inside out. I have been to those and no one was picking on “poor or poverty stricken” individuals. Or those costume affairs where you come dressed as your favorite politician-crook, favorite alien, etc. Some of these readers need to use common sense and quit being so thin skinned.

WPB Resident, bless your heart, let’s try to explain away your confusion. This event made fun of a distinct, well-established culture to which the attendees do not belong. Going to a tax poverty party (where everyone pays taxes) or an alien-themed party (where presumably no one is an alien) is not making fun of others but of guests’ common circumstances or interests. A “come as your favorite crook/politician” party would have been deliciously ironic, given the guest list. But a “visit someone else’s home and mock their history” party is rude in ANY culture. The question is whether these people have any culture and the answer appears to have been established to the satisfaction of most posters.

Everyone is so easily offended these days. Yes, the party was in poor taste, especially for a fundraiser. Looking through the photos, very few pulled of redneck effectively without looking like an ass and it’s clear that many of the guests don’t understand what a redneck is. I don’t usually respond to news articles or local charity events. I live in the western Palm Beach county area called “The Acreage”. I don’t qualify for the Term “Redneck, or Florida Cracker”. Our family moved from the so called civilized city (West Palm Beach)to “The Acreage”.
Some of my neighbors can be called Florida crackers and Rednecks. They can trace their ancestors to the original Florida cowbows called “Crackers”, due to the use of whips used to herd cattle. The original native Americans, farmers, and farm workers who settled Florida called “Rednecks”. Who put the food in the stores and on the tables that the so called Civilized and well educated members of, Men of the Garden, buy and eat.
I would like to see them get down and dirty to help feed the county and other parts of our Country. I doubt any of them know what real gardening is.

You insulted my wife’s culture and now pretend I’ve insulted yours - which is to say OURS. The dictionary’s definition of “ghetto” is as follows:

Why so defensive? Why so eager to play the “prejudice” card to defend your defamation of another culture? You could have looked that up for yourself instead of pretending I’ve insulted you. After all, you make no secret of your less-than-privileged background, which I consider no shame at all. What should shame you is that, having come from a background with similar values to those of actual Crackers (self-reliance, community spirit, stoicism and strong faith), you recoil into your sensitive skin when challenged, yet refuse to acknowledge the hurt you’ve caused to those of an equally valid culture. The point is that you are and, as long as you behave discourteously, will always be a visitor in this culture. There is a small and despised crowd of temporairement-riche, and there are those of us with dignity, a stable background, and a real concern for our home. The former have no right to satirize the latter. The latter will, if sufficiently provoked, invoke our deep roots and genuine friendships hereabouts to defeat certain zoning requests and other desires for preferential treatment. Nepotism is a trope because it’s effective.
I understand that some misguided souls didn’t see the harm in this fundraiser because they genuinely think that by purchasing a … not quite McMansion … let’s call it a Happy Meal House in Florida they become part of the culture. First of all “white trash” doesn’t deserve to be “honored.” “Crackers” are not “white trash.” “Rednecks” used to be “white trash” but now some of them seem to be proud of being called a “redneck” but no one is proud of being called “trash,” white, black, brown, etc. Poking fun at a domestic abuse victim and an apparently unwed mother-to-be is in poor taste to be sure. 98% of these people do not know the meaning of class. Class is reserved for those with morals, work ethic and a sense of purpose in life. A picture is worth a thousand words and classy is NOT one of them.
This is how my friends and I dress, If you would have went to one of my parties in college you would have seen similar folks there. I am not offended, and remember there are still a few crackers out there that could buy and sell these people.

Most of y’all need to grow a funny bone. I think the only thing bad about it are the costumes (ditch the cowboy hats in favor of baseball caps, and trade the plaid for old t-shirts) and the women’s hair (not nearly big enough). I’m from an old southern family with roots in MS, TN, and SC. Some of my relatives, including a couple of siblings, are about as redneck as you can possibly be. Others are as genteel as any Palm Beacher, and some are a mixture of the two. My Daddy never had a problem with people teasing him about being a redneck. He knew who he was, and he could laugh as much as anyone about his own idiosyncracies (sp?). He thought that most of our ethnic, racial, and social differences could be overcome if we would choose to laugh instead taking offense.

I think there are more tasteful and sensitive ways to support the arts and historical preservation. This just underlines the deep divide in our country that continues to widen between the privileged and under-privileged. I am optimistic that some of these same attendees also support and donate to programs that provide assistance to those in need. Thinking this helps me be more tolerant of this single error in judgement.
No idea— what one would think if these people had not had a hand in a half century of inciting books, films, msm shows, that, indeed, degrade, demoralize less monetarily-obsessed white people.
