A brawl involving former television weatherman and anchorman Bob Nichols at a Lake Worth country club – you read right, a genteel country club – ended with the arrest for battery of a club worker.
Nichols, formerly of WPEC-Channel 12 and WPTV-Channel 5, and other members were having a drink at the Sherbrooke Golf & Country Club bar when they objected to the spicy language of club employee Gino DiFonzo, the son of manager Pauline DiFonzo. The country club is owned by local philanthropist Mac Schwebel.
“He was swearing in front of female members,” Nichols said about Tuesday’s incident. “So I went outside.”
But then, so did DiFonzo.
And when he exited, DiFonzo claims he overheard Nichols badmouthing him.

“When he saw me standing there, Bob came at me screaming,” Gino DiFonzo said. “So, I pushed him back. Next thing I know, Bob is on top of me with another member, Eddie McDonald.”
The belligerents separately called 911. But DiFonzo had words with the sheriff’s deputy first arrived on the scene, and out came the handcuffs.
“I was an angry victim, so he arrested me,” DiFonzo said, adding he may have invaded the deputy’s personal space at one point. He also said he may have had a couple drinks.
Nichols and McDonald, meanwhile, say they are the victims of a foul-mouthed drunk. Still, McDonald was kicked out of the club first thing the following morning.
“I was trying to make sure Gino and Bob weren’t going to hurt one another and I’m the one who got kicked out,” McDonald said.
Pauline DiFonzo didn’t comment when asked to explain.
“Gino wasn’t acting right,” said Nichols, the executive director of the Grassy Waters Preserve.
Nichols made national news in the controversial presidential election of 2000 as spokesman for Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Theresa LePore. His job was to explain to the nation the terms hanging and pregnant chads.
No one was seriously hurt in Tuesday’s incident, except maybe for some egos.
Between Bob Nichols and Jim Sackett, the Hair CLub for Men must be off somewhere smacking their lips.

Bob Nichols needs to come back to the news. He got a raw deal and was wronged by the stations. He was hired out years back, if I remember coreectly by a station that failed before he could even get on the air, and news 12 refused to take him back. I think he got a bum deal. It shows what a pure true gentleman he still is by defending the woman against a trash mouth. This is a classy man, and I for one miss him on the news teams. Who cares about his hair. Rude comments- musty be jealous people, if all they can comment on is his hair and not his accomplishments. I miss you Mr. Nichols!!

Once in a while my husband and I run into Bob at an event. He is (and always was) a true gentleman.
He’s kind of a staple around here. I remember when he co-anchored with Aneta Sewell.

Way to go Bob! I’ve known him forever and he would never let anyone insult a woman. He gives back endlessly to this community. He was the best newsman at WPEC and the station hasn’t been the same since he left. DiFonzo must have been pretty offensive to rile Bob; he’s a very passive man.
Shame on you Jose, I just cancelled my subsciption to the Post. You knew the true story but still wrote the story that would make Bob look like the bad one. The bad one is Gino who does’t have a pot to piss in and drinks all the booze at the club because his mother who works there lets him do what he wants. Bob never touched him but since Gino said he did, thats what you thought was your ticket to get a story. If Mac only knew what was going on at his club. I’m sure he’ll find out now and maybe thats when things will finally change. Its a nice club but the woman that runs it(Gino’s mother)is not a friendly person and has run away many potential memebers. Hopefully things will change soon because of this.

How many times have you heard little kins using the F word etc in public places like the grocery store park and soon. With the parents thinking nothing about it and there mouth just as bad.

I don’t think the writer made Bob Nichols look like the bad guy. I read the article and thought “Hmm, who to believe? The older guy who has a good reputation or the other guy who was nasty enough when the deputys showed up to get himself arrested and looks happy in his mug shot?” Didn’t take long to make a decision there.
I agree Jane…I walked into the Club last Nov. to inquire about membership. I heard this woman screaming as soon as I entered and was ignored for 15 mins. Went elsewhere. Too Bad…Looks like a nice Golf Course.
Jane, I didn’t think badly of Nichols after reading this. Jose wrote what happened from law enforcement records, and we all know who is at fault.
I dont know Gino but Bob was my neighbor years ago and everyone in our neighborhood thought he was a self centered a$$hole.Go figure!!

His daughter Natalie nichols is a real nut job too. A friend of mine and him met her at 4th on Flagler one year and she took interest in him but he did not feel the same. She stalked him for months even showing up at his place of work (Middle School Teacher) before he could shake her. Geesh

If what #14 says is true then Mac Schwebel needs to fire Pauline DiFonzo ASAP. And as far as Gino is concerned it doesn’t seem like the apple falls far from the tree. He admitted to the cops he had been drinking and it’s obvious that Pauline knew it. I can’t believe a class act like Schwebel is going to allow this.

I would like to thank those of you who took time to comment on this story, both positive and negative.
For those who don’t like me, I’m sorry, but when you’ve lived a great portion of your life in a fish bowl, there will be times people just won’t agree with you, or not like something you do. I really found that out when I ran for public office sometime back. It goes with the territory.
Insofar as being stuck-up I’ve always tried my best to treat everyone with respect and fairness, I’m sorry that someone might feel I’m egotistical, but I promise you I’m much less stuck on myself than many people I’ve encountered in my business.
As far as the story in Jose’s column today, I promise you I was without fault in any way, shape or form. I was verbally abused and threatened, and friends stepped in to protect me from what they percieved to be a physical threat.
I’ve know this young man for many years, and I have always been friendly with him, accomodated him at events, and socialized in the past without any hint that he might have a problem with me.
My biggest concern is for my friend Mac Schwebel, a wonderful caring man, who at his age should not have to be troubled with someting like this. There is no one in this community who is more giving than Mac Schwebel.

Bob, please control that rap music loving Son of yours so we can live in peace and not feel like we are living in South Central LA. Bob’s response using the word “fishbowl” makes it sound as if someone outside Palm Beach County has ever even heard of him! I tend to believe the comments by the people who live near him. Also, many years ago (at least 20 I think) I read in the PB Post that he was arrested for domestic violence during which he used a knife. I also read he had gone to rehab. If that is true I guess he fell off the wagon.
Gino is not a kid, he is a 40 yr old man that can’t hold a job so has to work for mommy, who herself sleeps half the time on the couch at the clubhouse, cuz she’s afraid to be around him herself! Many a member, or member to be have walked in to find her snoring away. Gino and mommy need to go. Won’t surprise me a bit however, if Pauline has Bob banned instead of her son!
Obviously LIVING_WITH_BOB doesn’t know their neighbors very well. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for many years and know them personally. Bob or his son do not own a black SUV. In fact, the neighbor next door to them that has a son owns the black SUV. He’s the one driving around with the rap music blasting shaking your house. If you live in this neighborhood you must not be very observant to not know that.
I’m so glad to see the wonderful comments about Bob. I have been friends with his wife for almost 40 years, and I was in their wedding. Jose, once again, has slanted this story to degrade another good person’s reputation. Sorry, you are not a reporter…merely a gossip columnist. I know the information in your “article” is incorrect and totally inaccurate. I am a guest at the Nichols residence on many occasions, so FYI “Living With Bob” they don’t even own a black SUV, but their male, teenaged neighbor does. I am very fortunate to know the Nichol’s family, and they are not rich, snobby people, nor abusive in any fashion. They are wonderful, compassionate people, and I am blessed to be their friends.

Well, I have heard from multiple people around Gardens that Nichols is a bully and a jerk - as for tagging him with the kid in the black SUV - Retracted and corrected.
“Living With Bob” I hardly call that a retraction. “You have heard from multiple people in the Gardens that Nichols is a jerk.” Most people, only believe half of what they read, and less about hearsay. Wow, sounds kind of like Jose’s reporting!
I also remember Bob from yrs. back doing local news and if I recall also local MC for Jerry Lewis telethon he always seemed a gentleman and Prof. and local TV good use him back instead of all the 20 somethings on the air today.As they say a picture tells the story so look at Bob and then that DiFonzi character….case closed.
I’m amazed at a lot of these comments. People talking about what they know nothing about 20 years ago. Simply AMAZING! You seem to think you know someone by something that was published in a newspaper once, and accuse the person today based on what you THINK happened back then. A fishbowl? OF COURSE! And anyone in the limelight is almost useless to defend themselves over your perception, since you read it in the paper so it must be true. Hide behind your computers and make your stupid, insensitive comments. Even take a shot at the man’s daughter and son, because you don’t have the dignity to confront the situation in real life, assumming what you say is even true, which I think someone has already told you that it was not. No wonder the kids today act the way they do, because of YOU! Bob saw something happening in front of him and said something in response to it. Bob is a gentleman, always giving of himself for the community. Gino is a disturbed individual, he has failed at every endeavor and come into conflict in every relationhip. He was drunk and looking for a fight. Pauline isn’t blameless, she looks the other way when Gino is around, but she will cover this up best she can and blame others like she always does.
I have no idea who this Bob Nichols is as I just arrrived her in the south last year. 99% of the blogs are from people that appear to know him or know of him as they speak very highly of him. Wow!! This completely blows my mind! I happen to be a close friend of Bob and his son Bobby. And Bobby is nothing like what was said( living_with_bob). His son does not even own a black SUV, the neighbor’s son next door owns one. So if you claim to be a neighbor, gets your facts straight before you put something like that up on the internet. And as for him being a bully, his son is a kind and caring person who spends most of his time at that golf club working on his golf game. One day we will all watch him on the PGA Tour then we can have our opinions about him. Bobby is a very good looking young man that lights up a room when he walks in it. I hope he will have a very successful golf career and his father will be proud of him. And by the way, Bobby listens to country music so I dont think Snoop Dogg will appear on his ipod playlist. I am a friend of Bob Nichols. I would not say a close personal friend who speaks with him daily, But a friend.
And in speaking with him truly believe he was without fault in this situation. To print an article without getting the facts straight is just irresponsible. If this had happened without a Bob Nichols being involved it would have never been a story. Bob is a good person and I am proud to call him my friend. And I have no problem posting my name as a witness to his character.

After my comment today there is possibility that i will no longer be employed @ sherbroke any longer, but thats ok.. as long as i say what i feel instead of holding it in as i have for the last couple of days, i was a witness, and Mr. lambiets sorry to inform you but ur column on yesterdays paper tells no facts. Point of the matter here, is that alcohol was involved, and it never should have come to this, i think its juvenille and uncalled for, because @ the end of the day the only vitims is Mac Schwebel and the clubs reputation. I’ve been a employee there for about close to 4yrs, and never been put into a position as i have on 7/21, i have always known sherbrooke to be a place where people come out and enjoy the beautiful golf course, and kind people with delicious food. Its a pleasure for me to serve Mr.Schwebel everyday, he is like no other, and honestly he is the only reason i remain a loyal employee.
There are a lot of Country Clubs to choose from, and would love to have the Nichols family membership. Why would a club that has paying members allow such rif-raf to be around their members, much less be employed. If I were Bob I would cancel my membership and find a club that respects its members and guests.
This is a tragic piece of irresponsible journalism IMHO. I called the Post with this story, in an effort to reveal yet another case of deputy misconduct on the part of the PBSO, as well as IA impotence and incompetence, and to put Bob Nichols, and Edward McDonald, on notice, that if they continued to lie about what went on, their lies would inevitably be publicly revealed; NOT to provide a forum for character assassination via unsubstantiated comments, which have obviously been posted by individuals with private, bitter agendas, and whose only means of elevating their own self-worth is through the self-righteous practice of attempting to destroy another’s. To these people, I believe the “ego enforcers” are hiring now. And to those people who have already convicted me, or Bob for that matter, on the basis of our “appearance”, the KKK, as well as the National Socialist Party, are recruiting I am sure. Even I was offended by some of the comments posted about Bob, and this was while reading horrendous insults about my mother, sister, and myself! Aren’t any of you haters aware of libel laws, and the fact that IP’s can be tracked?
Jose has clearly framed the events which occurred for sensationalism, and quite frankly, most of you are commenting on a “phantom” event, if your comments are based on this article.
I cannot go into great detail, because of the legal issues which are clearly rapidly arising, but I feel I must correct a few mis-conceptions and flat-out inaccuracies which have been presented and/or appear to have been accepted as fact.
ALL of the statements which follow have/can/will continue to be supported by objective evidence and witnesses, some but not all, present at the time of the incident:
1.) This incident did not occur in a “public” space. Sherbrooke is a private country club, and is private property. It is not an “equity club”; the members have absolutely no say whatsoever in how the club is run, or who runs it, and they are all informed of this fact before they join. Those that do not approve of management are welcome to seek membership elsewhere. What they are NOT welcome to do, is join the club and then defame it, and my family, but unfortunately, too many people to mention have done just this over the last 30 years.
2.) Sherbrooke is not a Catholic School, day-care facility, or courtroom; the first amendment not only applies in the bar area, but is, always has been, and will continue to be, jubilantly celebrated by both Men and Women alike. I have been at, and worked at, this club since before I was 10 years old (when my late father was the general manager), and I have never heard, nor heard of, a single complaint from any patron regarding “swearing”. I mean, really people, any golfer should realize how ludicrous Bob Nichol’s statement is; criticizing a person for swearing in the bar area of an amateur golf course is not only irredeemably hypocritical on his part but positively precious. i.e. Some of the curses from the golf course I’ve actually heard all the way up in the bar area!
3.) I was not working at the time of this incident, I was socializing, as is my privilege, and the impetus for the majority of the hateful, jealous comments that have been posted about me.
4.) I told Jose that all parties involved, to the best of my knowledge, were drinking, but that alcohol was not a factor, yet he chose only to print that I admitted to consuming alcohol.
5.) Jose writes: “Pauline diFonzo didn’t comment when asked to explain.” No one called my mother until AFTER this article was printed, and this is easily verifiable through phone records. She has however, after reading this piece of “journalism”, informed Jose that she has no comment.
6.) Jose writes: “But then, so did diFonzo . . .” like it is some cheesy cliffhanger in a B-rated horror film, as if I immediately “followed” the men outside, when in point of fact, a significant amount of time elapsed (enough for the men to feel confident that their negative remarks about my family would not be overheard) before I went outside (to get warm incidentally).
7.) I told Jose that when I walked out onto the patio (at the club) I heard Bob Nichols badmouthing MY MOTHER, and calling me “a piece of SHIT”. He did this in front of Ed McDonald, a (separate) new member, and, by the way, no women were present, nor had been for quite some time, but a child was.
8.) This is not the first time Bob Nichols has done this, it is only the first time he has done it in front of me or a member of my family. He did this mistakenly, as when I walked out onto the patio to sit down, his back was to me, and although Ed McDonald was trying to warn him, Bob didn’t turn around and see me until after the words were out of his mouth and I was already seated. At this point, I can tell you that from my own personal experience, the comments following this article about Bob’s ego and temper are not libelous.
9.) Jose writes ” . . . adding he may have invaded the deputy’s personal space at some point.” I told Jose that I invaded the deputy’s personal space intentionally, and I explained to him precisely why and when I did it. The deputy, Brandon(?) Hegele(?), was abusive with me from the moment he arrived, a matter of public record by the way, because he screamed at me when I was on the phone with another officer during my own 911 call over this incident. When I told the deputy that Bob Nichols stood up (while I was still seated), and began yelling at me in his “announcer voice” like I was some errant child he was disciplining while moving aggressively towards me, and that at that point I stood up, but by that time he was already directly in front of me, screaming at me and invading my personal space, (also, Ed McDonald had stood up and was moving around to my side aggressively, a position from which he would shortly grab me) I told him to back up and pushed him lightly (as I am well aware of Bob Nichol’s health problems). Deputy Hegele, then tells me that I have essentially just admitted to committing a crime. I asked him directly if he was actually trying to tell me that, according to the law, I was not allowed to push someone back who was aggressively invading my personal space while screaming at me. He said yes! I told him that his statement was a flat-out lie, that I was well aware that I had the right to do exactly what I told him I did. He told me I was wrong, so as I said “oh reallly?”, I stuck my chest out and began moving forward into his personal space (he was standing right in front of me, so we are talking about an inch of movement here). He immediately put his hands flat out and up to my chest and prepared to push me back (I stopped before his hands ever reached my chest) and he said “Whoa, whoa . . . don’t do that!” To this I replied, “So, it isn’t okay to invade someone’s personal space after all?” Ego enforcement ensued. I related this entire story to Jose, yet he chose only to write the aforementioned inaccuracy, completely devoid of the context I provided him.
There are too many greedy, egotistical, personal, agendas and political angles going on behind the scenes (and have been for years) of this incident for anyone not directly involved with the club to truly make an accurate assessment of the situation, and even then, many intentionally won’t for the same reasons. However, I’m sure honestly objective, fair people (if there are any left in South Florida : ) reading this are capable of imaging what happens when an attractive woman is in a position of absolute authority over wealthy, entitled males, let alone egotistical employees, both male and female, who all think her job should be theirs.

I wasn’t there, but I have many years in the promotion and nightclub biz and I can tell you with 100% certainty that your actions you described in #9 were incredibly stupid - and this is your sugarcoated version. Good luck using that logic when you explain it to a judge.

Not sure what actions you are specifically describing LoneWolf777, but I think, from your comments, that you are assuming I was working as a “bouncer” or employee of some sort, when all I was in this instance was another patron for all intents and purposes. Care to elaborate LoneWolf777?

I’ve seem many a patron puff their chest out and try to educate a LEO like you did. They get arrested 100% of the time. And every guy I’ve ever seen pull that stunt had a chip on his shoulder the size of the Rock of Gibraltar. Now, I don’t know you and you may in fact may be an OK guy, but I can assure you that if you walk into a courtroom and try to “educate” the judge the same way it will backfire. I’m sure this whole episode and its publicity has you and your Mom’s stomach in knots. Perfectly understandable, but this is the time you really need to put your Italian temper in check before the whole thing snowballs. BTW, I’m 100% Italian-American. Been there, seen it, done it.
Thanks for explaining LoneWolf777 - I understand exactly what you mean on all counts.
However, I knew the deputy had already decided to railroad me when he made the ridiculous statement about not being legally allowed to defend myself in the situation I was in; making a jack-ass out of him was my own little personal victory when I realized he was not there to enforce the law and I was going to get arrested no matter what I said. Last time I checked, it isn’t legal for a deputy to arrest you because you’ve wounded his colossal ego, but, as you’ve stated, so called “law enforcement” still does it “100% of the time”.
This is not the first time I have been confronted by an ignorant PBSO officer who engages in ego enforcement rather than law enforcement, and I am, as I am sure quite a few others in this county are, sick of being “pissed on by them and told it is raining” (this would be the “chip on his shoulder the size of the Rock of Gibraltar” you refer to : ).
Your analogy with the judge is humorous, but not only couldn’t I get close enough to “educate” the judge in that manner, but I seriously hope that a JUDGE in this county would at least be familiar with the legal parameters regarding self defense, and therefore such an education would not be necessary.

dam I miss you guys at sheerbrooke! the members at sheerbrooke considered me to be the best bartender to ever step foot in the club. working 40 to 80 hours a week there I was fortunate to know all the members. you guys are family to me. this was the best job I ever held and what made it that way was the members. I couldnt of worked for any better employers mac schwebel and pauline difonzo. I was also fortunate to get to know bob nichols his son and his wife and they were good respectable people. as a bartender I blame this situation on the alcohol. I had to leave sheerbrooke cause of my health situation a year ago. I had an open heart chest surgery to remove a tumor. I found employment at simmons veterinary hospital and made employee of the month there this month. once again I love sheerbrooke the staff, the members, and the golf course (a beautiful getaway spot). to all the members im still bartending private parties, weddings and all occasions. You were arrested because it was obvious that you were the cause of the Sheriff being there in the first place. No matter what novel book you decided to write on this board, and what legal threats you chose to try to csare us with (and we are so scared), YOU were the one arrested and nobody else was sitting downtown having to talk their way out of jail. Good luck in court and in life. You obviously will need all the luck you can gather, since you are too ignorant to live life any other way.

Gino…One has the right to defend themselves but the man did not touch you, he was standing on the side of you. YOU touched him when you pushed him. THAT is Assault and you did it in fromt of an LEO! Your getting in the Deputy’s space is taken as a threat. He did have the right to arrest you..you obviously were acting in a loud and threatening manner, no doubt with help from your alcohol intake. YOU need to learn to take responsiblity for you actions and stop blaming others, like Law Enforcement.

My guess is that is was from the University of Budweiser. It is a shame that with your so-called good education you had to rely on Mommy to put you to work.
