Too much fun at the Rum Shack?

The owner of the popular Lake Worth watering hole was pinched for DUI and hit-and-run early Wednesday.

Kevin Knight, 43, a former cruise ship bartender whose signature drink is the 4-liquor Drunken Monkey, spent most of yesterday in the county slammer after a sheriff’s deputy stopped him about 1 a.m.

According to the arrest report, Knight was at the wheel of a Jeep on 17th Avenue North in Lake Worth when he swerved into the deputy’s lane, nearly crashing into him. According to the report, Knight swerved to avoid three men walking on the side of road but hit one of them. The deputy reported seeing the man fall. The unidentified passerby suffered scrapes and bruises.

The PBSO deputy, meanwhile, stopped Knight and described him as “slow in speech.” Knight admitted to having had “a couple” but said he didn’t know he hit someone.

This is the publicity the Rum Shack has ever gotten. Jose’ it is impossible to have too much of a good time at the Rum Shack, have you ever sat there in the outdoors area? You can’t the downtown junkies in “recovery” will not let you alone bumming for cigarettes and bus money (to nowhere by choice)
    I HATE THEM!

Well, they do give you a good pour at the Shack, great music too.

Maybe he was just speaking slowly figuring it was necessary to communicate a PBSO deputy? Most of them are mentally slow, so speaking at a slow pace with simple words is kind of in everyone’s best interest.

  6. Comment by Pat — July 29, 2010 @ 8:54 am

The music is good at the shack… Acoustics suck… they need to build some acoustic panels

Big deal, people get popped for DUI all the time. Lake Worth has nothing to do with it, if anything he learns a lesson and glad nobody was hurt. Just because he owns Rum Shack is no reason to tear him down.

Easy Crimney!!!! Nobody is going to take the nostalgia of lake worth away from ya!

No worries Kevin…..I call for a round of Drunken Monkeys for all involved….including the ocipher with a hearing problem….

It is legal to Drink and Drive! You just can’t drive with a BAC(.08) over the limit. Knowing when you are at this limit is what most people have not figured out. If found guilty he will pay for his probation. In States like New York, only the DUI’s have to pay for their probation. Get busted for Pot, Crack, Oxy, etc., and you just get a slap on the wrist. It is too costly to incarcerate them for small drug offenses. The threat over losing your license for DUI causes people to pay up!

All of you people trashing Lake Worth on these blogs, listen up. Rum Shack on any night of the week, is one of the most relaxing, chill atmospheres in Palm Beach County. Nobody gives a $hi* what the guy sitting next to him drove there. Thats the beauty of the place. Go there, and be yourself. Lake Worth is one of the most interesting, old surf towns in palm beach county. If you cant appreciate that, stay away. Every city has its slummy areas. Im so sick of reading your judgemental, uneducated posts that unjustly bash a great town with some serious character. Like I said, if you cant appreciate Lake Worth, for the laid back, blue collar, surf town that it trully is, keep out… We will be just fine without you.

F$%* all you haters. Lake Worth is one of the most laid back places in Palm Beach County. Its refreshing to find a spot in South Florida where everyone its not so tight!

Hey, I say this guy is now a great candidate for police officer at Riviera Beach or better yet he can replace Terry Marvin at the PBSO.

Love the Rum Shack and Lake Worth.
Sorry to hear the owner made the decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated. I sure hope the person he hit is OK.
Unfortunately drinking and driving is something too many people do, all over the world, every day….not just in Lake Worth.

I won’t turn my back on Rum Shack or judge Kevin for his mistake…he made a bad choice and hopefully the person he hit is OK and hopefully he will learn from this and not drive after having “a couple” or any for that matter….that’s all any of us can do is learn from our mistakes.

    Good luck, Kevin!

  18. Comment by pbso liar — July 29, 2010 @ 11:38 am

How could the deputy “see the guy fall” if Knight was driving a jeep. Jeeps are too high profile to see over especially while trying to avoid kevin’s car swerving to miss the pedestrian in the street. pbso is nothing but lying garbage. They wouldn’t know the truth if it crapped on their heads

  19. Comment by Pier Rat — July 29, 2010 @ 11:42 am

Fellas, we have to admit that Lake Worth is lame….I used to surf there years ago…Then moved north to Palm Beach and never again….When you have a high school mascot that is named after a condom….What can you expect??….Too many barnacles in LW….Palm Beach rules!!!

  20. Comment by LWL — July 29, 2010 @ 12:36 pm

You are the ones who are the ball lickrs. LW is played out, Rum Shack is for old drunks, and the beach looks like you went to sleep and woke up in Guatamala. Bring back Rosies.

Hey. Like some of you have said. Everyone makes mistakes and we have all done it a time or two. But before we jump on a man and determine what kind of person he is , you should know that this man dug into his own pocket to do a benefit for slain firefighter Raymond Vasquez’ family a few years ago and is active in charitable events in this area. Its no excuse, and I know Kevin, this will be a learning experience and after all this passes, he will still be the good man that he is at heart. But for now, well Kevin, good luck bro. I’m gonna stop by for a shot of Jager….ONE !

  25. Comment by amber2stu — July 29, 2010 @ 1:26 pm

Just jumping in to invite the haters to stay out of Lake Worth. If you can’t appreciate this character-filled town, with it’s unique presence, festivals like Street Painting and concerts in Bryant Park, Bike Night every Thursday, more live music per night - for free! - than anywhere else in PBC, plus reasonable prices, decent food, dog friendly bars and even friendlier people, that’s cool. Don’t come on down. The party will continue without you! All the best to Kevin, we all make mistakes and I do believe he’s innocent until proven guilty. I’ll be down the Rum Shack for sure, hoisting one in support.

I lived in LW all my life and then moved to Atlanta, which I love. When I left FL and LW I hated it. Now when I come home to visit I can’t tell you how much I love LW and appreciate it for what it is. Granted I don’t want to ever live there or bring up a family there but its a fun place with a lot of character. Definitely beats Palm Beach where everyone is superficial and fake.

Lake Worth isn’t plastic because bums can’t get credit cards.

RE : comment 37……..I totally agree with you!! Has anyone ever been to west delray, west boynton, West WPB!!?? It makes LW look like a amusement park! These places are waaaay worse than any part of LW, yet you never hear anyone confuse Atlantic Ave or Clematis to these places! Why does everyone feel the need to lump DOWNTOWN LW with the western skeevy part of LW?? Just sayin…..

I have known Kevin for years, and he is a class act, just made a mistake, that 99% of us have all made sometime or another. I know Kevin feel’s horrible that someone got hurt, even if it was not that bad, cause he always looks out for everyone else, and truly cares so give him a break, made a mistake, and I know he feels worse then anyone that someone got hurt.

Lake Worth does now, and always has, sucked. It’s been a dump since the late 60’s and any one who says otherwise is a liar….and they know it.

  47. Comment by Keepers1 — July 29, 2010 @ 8:35 pm

I came to this area to read about the arrest and not just to put a “judgmental” comment up about the man or his arrest. As I read most of these comments, it seems like a lot of you just wait for something to be posted so you can be ignorant. Sometimes it’s best to take a look at your own life and see just how “perfect” you are….everyone makes mistakes and we learn from them.

Grow up and check your own lives before throwing stones at the guy. Bet the ones making negative comments are the main ones that are dealing with screwed up issues of their own and need to feel better by finding fault in others.
