Latin stars shine in Palm Beach

There was barely any advance buzz for the BMI Latin Awards, which brought 450 people Thursday night to The Breakers in Palm Beach.

Too bad. Some of the biggest Latin music stars, those deemed by the authors’ rights organization to be the business’ best and brightest of 2008, walked the red carpet.

Palm Beach? Did BMI honchos get lost on the way to Miami?

Not at all, said Delia Orjuelo, the L.A.-based company’s head of Latin music.

“We move around every year and we loved the elegance of this place,” Orjuelo said. “There’s diversity in music.”

At least, Colombian rocker Juanes, one of the gala’s most famous guests, knows the area. The Latin Grammy winner 17 times over rehearsed two of his tours on a West Palm Beach sound stage. (Read more…)

Disgraced former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley has been thrown out of better places, I’m sure, and not just because of the heinous plaid jacket he wore.

Foley and his lover, dermatologist Layne Nisenbaum, were unceremoniously bounced from the Cartier Christmas party on Palm Beach’s Worth Avenue earlier this month.

Two eyewitnesses told Page2Live that Foley, who resigned from his congressional seat two years ago after he was caught e-mailing sweet nothings to young pages, was actually just an innocent bystander in a squabble between society skin-smoother Nisenbaum and an unidentified partygoer.

Palm Beach social butterflies buzzing about tome

'Madness' is coming out Jan. 27.

Palm Beach is on edge.

No, it’s not the economy.

It’s just that best-selling author Larry Leamer’s book about wealth and loathing on The Island is about to hit the bookstores.

And in a place where one’s image often costs millions, there’s uneasiness about the book’s content – especially when it is penned by the man who deconstructed mercilessly Arnold Schwarzenegger in an much-talked-about 2005 biography.

Any amateur fortune-teller could have seen this one coming.

Miss Cleo’s itching to get back into television.

And the psychic, who now lives in Lake Worth, recently e-mailed her expansive list of friends to ask for their support.

“Hello My Dears,” she writes, “First and foremost, HUGS AND KISSES!!!! I need a favor from each and everyone of you. My publicist is currently conducting an email campaign to gauge how the ‘public’ would receive my return to television. The show would focus on relationships. Your emails will be so VERY IMPORTANT to moving forward . . .

So, Page2Live called Miss Cleo to find out more. (Read more…)

Tough Palm Beach Thanksgiving weekend for Revlon big Ron Perelman’s 18-year-old nephew.

Robby Cohen

Robby Cohen

Robby Cohen, a college freshman visiting family, was nabbed by Palm Beach Police for allegedly trying to buy booze with a phony driver’s license.

He actually had two of those, according to the arrest report.

Robby Cohen is an heir to the mega-rich family that owns Hudson News, a chain of newstands. His aunt was Claudia Cohen, a former TV gossip reporter who was married to Perelman. She died of cancer last year. His father is Claudia’s brother.

Robby’s galpal, the equally underage Amanda DiResta, was also arrested. She’s the daughter of well-known Long Island builder Brian DiResta. (Read more…)

Stephen Asprinio, who parlayed appearances on Bravo’s Top Chef into an anchor restaurant in West Palm Beach’s Clematis district, is out at the joint he opened nine months ago.

The chi-chi eatery’s name, Forte di Asprinio, will remain, as will most of the personnel, including Executive Chef Mark Lieberman.

But the 27-year-old Asprinio tells me he won’t be seen at the Miami Beach-style restaurant for a long time. (Read more…)

He did his duty, and she didn’t.

Just checked on the Nov. 4 voting records of Palm Beach’s two conservative celebrities, radio talker Rush Limbaugh and firebrand Ann Coulter.

It’s a mixed (Gucci) bag.

A well-known feminist writer-therapist-new age guru, Wendy Hunter Roberts, Monday filed for her piece of Kalish’s estate.

Roberts contends she enjoyed “a very close personal relationship” with Kalish and a will that has yet to be found made her Kalish’s beneficiary.
Roberts joins Kalish’s mother and the family of Kalish’s killer, Carol Anne Burger, among those vying for what could amount to $1 million.

Proving that foreclosures spare no one, a Miami Beach property owned by hip-hopper Wyclef Jean is about to be auctioned on the proverbial courthouse steps, according to court records.

Through a corporation he owns with friends, the former guitarist of The Fugees borrowed $2 million from Home Equity Mortgage Corp. in 2004.

He wanted to rebuild a canal-front home next door to Kennedy clan stalwart Anthony Shriver, Maria’s little brother.

But a series of construction liens filed since then shows the Pine Tree Drive project was burdened by a heap of financial trouble.

Former New York Mets catcher Gary Carter, former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Jim Palmer, former U.S. Secretary of State Al Haig, Gov. Charlie Crist and his wife-to-be, Carole Rome, are among the VIPs expected at Saturday’s ADT Championship black-tie gala at Mar-a-Lago.

The Championship pits the best professional women golfers for a $1 million purse this week at Trump International in West Palm Beach. And several of the ladies are expected to show up at the fiesta - a fund-raiser for the West Palm-based Institute for Mobility and Longevity.

In the silent auction: A share in a $200,000-thoroughbred owned by breeder Gale Brophy, who happens to be the wingding’s chairwoman.
